Field Trips

Feeling a little batty or need to take a long stroll through the countryside.  You may have missed some of the past outings to the bat caves or guided field trips into the surrounding hill country, but stay tuned for future events sponsored by this chapter.  We will update this page with information as the events become scheduled.

Love Creek Preserve - Saturday, October 28, 2006

Come for a well-rounded tour of the Love Creek Preserve on the morning of Saturday, October 28th. The tour guides will be Jason Singhurst, TPWD and Bill Ward, Boerne NPSOT. We will car pool from the Cibolo Nature Center parking lot, leaving promptly at 8:30 AM. Bring the usual water, etc. and a brown bag lunch. The field trip will be limited to 20 members. Mission San Juan Capistrano - Saturday, May 21, 2005

Go take a hike -- for fun! Join us for a walk on the San Juan Woodland Trail at the Mission San Juan Capistrano, part of the San Antonio Missions National Historic Park network of missions. Patty Leslie Pasztor will give a brief history of the mission and then lead us on the trail, which winds down to the river.

We will carpool from CNC. We will leave promptly at 8:30 AM for the approximately hour drive to the mission. Those who don't want to carpool, can meet the group in the parking lot of the mission (9101 Graff Rd.) at 9:30 AM. Bring the usual field trip items. We will lunch at noon. You can bring a brown bag for lunch at picnic tables at the mission or go to a nearby Tex-Mex restaurant that Patty recommends. The field trip will be limited to 20 people. Bear Springs Blossom Nature Conservation Group - This trip was cancelled.

Come take a stroll with us at the Bear Springs Blossom NCG in Pipe Creek and discover its natural beauty. We will meet at the Cibolo Nature Center at 8:30 AM for car pooling and then leave from there at 9:00 AM to arrive at Bear Springs Blossom at 9:30 AM.

Introductory remarks will be by Peter and Marianne Bonenberger, “Living in Harmony with Nature”. Our goal is to show how beautiful Nature can be and why we should conserve and restore it.

We will have a leisurely nature/wildflower walk along the Madrone Trail and the Main Trail. Brown bag lunch will be at the Pond at 11:30 AM (or thereabouts).

Enchanted Rock State Natural Area - March 11, 2003 (rain date: March 13, 2003)

Enjoy the beauty of Enchanted Rock while on a relaxing walk with the informative Mike McBride of the Fredericksburg Chapter.  Mike is the President-Elect of the Native Plant Sociey of Texas, along with other roles.  He will also be presenting a talk on "Plants of the Llano Uplift" at our regular meeting on March 4.

We will meet at Enchanted Rock State Natural Area on March 11, with a rain date of March 13.  The morning walk will begin at 10:00 AM, but plan on arriving around 9:30 AM to allow time to pay the entrance fee and find the meeting spot.  After the morning walk, we will stop by the parking lot to pick up our lunches for a 45-minute break.  The afternoon walk will begin from the picnic area about 1:00 PM.

Enchanted Rock State Park is located 18 miles north of Fredericksburg on Ranch Road 965.  Park admission is $5.00 and $3.00 for seniors.  Estimated driving time from Boerne is one hour.


Peaceful Habitations Rose Gardens - April 24, 2003

Take in the beautiful and fragrant flowers on a tour of Peaceful Habitations Rose Gardens.

We will gather at 2:45 pm at the Boerne Park & Ride on North Main Street just past the traffic light at the corner of the Sisterdale cutoff and School Rd.  Or take FM 1376 about 5 1/2 miles and just before a deep road cut will be a sign on the right for Peaceful Habitations.  Turn right on Seewald Road and about 1/2 mile down the road will be the rose gardens.  Our host will be Joe Cooper.

Just 4 miles to the north is the town of Sisterdale, where the Sistercreek winery is open from 12:00 noon to 5:00 pm and the Sisterdale Feed Barn restaurant opens at 5:00 pm - plan to join us!  Take time to smell the roses.


Cozy Cottage & Antiques B & B in Comfort - May 16, 2003 3:00 pm

Tour award-winning landscaped yard that adds up to dollars and sense for Comfort couple April and Fred Langston, owners of Cozy Cottage & Antiques Bed and Breakfast and members of Boerne Chapter, Native Plant Society of Texas.  We will tour the charming yard and garden while our hosts answer questions of why they choose mostly native plants and trees for their business venture in downtown Comfort.  Cozy Cottage is located at 413 Seventh Street.  830-995-4917

We will meet at 2:30 pm at the Park & Ride on North Main Street and 87 past the last traffic light in Boerne.

Also of note in the area is the latest Free Thinkers Monument dedicated in 2002 and located next to the Ingenhuett Store on High Street in historic downtown within walking distance of Langston's home.  Arleen's, Mimi's are good choices to join us after the tour for dessert and coffee.  Comfort is located at the junction of IH10 and Texas Highways 87 & 27- 16 miles North West of Boerne.
