Old Tunnel Wildlife Management Area (WMA)
Old San Antonio Rd., Kendall County, Texas
At a little over 16 acres in size, the Old Tunnel Wildlife Management Area has the distinction of being the smallest Wildlife Management Area in the State of Texas. An abandoned railroad tunnel on the property is home to Mexican free-tailed bats (Tadarida brasiliensis) and Cave Myotis bats (Myotis velifer). There is also an enchanting quarter-mile long nature trail that partially follows the old railroad grade. Old Tunnel is located about 10 miles south of Fredericksburg on Old San Antonio Rd., in Kendall County near its border with Gillespie County.
The Fredericksburg Chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas periodically conducts field trips to Old Tunnel WMA. We are maintaining a plant list of the WMA that was started by Texas Parks and Wildlife Dept. botanist Jason Singhurst. This list currently has 213 species.
