The idea to organize the Guadlaupe County Chapter came out of a meeting of twelve people in May, 2008 at Deedy Wright's house.  After discussing the feasibility of forming a chapter, everyone agreed that Schertz/Cibolo/Seguin/ Universal City needed a local group.  The State Office in Fredericksburg was contacted to find out what was required and and the minimum number of twelve memberships was rounded up. Then on July 18, 2008 Deedy Wright and Sandy Tremaine attended the NPSOT State Board meeting in Fredericksburg where the new chapter was officially recognized.  The founding members recruited more members and in September, 2008 held the first public meeting. Gailon Hardin, the in-coming State President, gave a program for twenty-four people and welcomed the group into the larger organization.

Chapter Goals: educate members about growing native plants, identifying natives and using natives effectively in the landscape.
Take field trips to places of interest.
Enjoy social activities where members get to know each other.
Do community projects in our area using native plants.

Why native plants?
from Lady Bird Johnson Wildlife Center
  1. they use less water
  2. they are generally disease and pest resistant
  3. they reduce or eliminate the need for soil amendments and fertilizers
  4. they provide resources for regional wildlife
  5. they reduce or eliminate the potential of introducing invasive exotic plants
  6. they provide necessary "ecological services" such as water purification and storm water reduction
  7. they help us become better connected with the natural world of our region
  8. gardening with native plants promotes regional identity
  9. they are beautiful!
