We have been operating for a year now and what an interesting time it has been.
We have committed to collecting seeds for the Millenium Seed Bank, under
the direction of Lady
Bird Johnson
Wildflower Center.
We are in the discussion and planning stages for a seeding project at
Bracken Bat Preserve. We had a fund-raising booth at Earth Day in Seguin and made lots of new friends. We
are supporters of the Grow Local Festival in Schertz and the Community
Garden. We plan to continue these activities and add more as we are
able. We invite you to visit any of our meetings and get to know us
better! We
hope you will learn something about native plants in the process. Click on our Meetings tab for directions to the Library, our new meeting place.
Chapter Goals:
educate members about growing native plants, identifying natives and
using natives effectively in the landscape.
Take field
trips to places of interest.
Enjoy social
activities where members get to know each other.
Do community
projects in our area using native plants.
Why native plants?
from
Lady Bird Johnson Wildlife Center
- they use less
water
- they are
generally disease and pest resistant
- they reduce or
eliminate the need for soil amendments and fertilizers
- they provide
resources for regional wildlife
- they reduce or
eliminate the potential of introducing invasive exotic plants
- they provide
necessary "ecological services" such as water purification and storm
water reduction
- they help us
become better connected with the natural world of our region
- gardening with
native plants promotes regional identity
- they are beautiful!
