Dedicated to the understanding, preservation and enjoyment of the native flora of the Hill Country

June 2007

Butterflies in the Hill Country

Hill Country Butterflies will be the subject of an illustrated program at the June 5 meeting of the Native Plant Society of Texas.  The meeting will be at the Riverside Nature Center and begins at 2:00 p.m.
Tom Collins will discuss the science of butterflies, the species most likely to be seen in the Hill Country, their host plants and additional information sources available to get started in butterflying.
Tom is a native of the Hill Country.  His degree is from Texas A&M with a major in math and physics.  He worked in Lake Jackson for Dow Chemical for 30+ years.  He now lives in Center Point.  Tom is a master gardener and was the founder and first president of the Cradle of Texas Master Naturalist Chapter (Brazoria County).  He is a member of the Texas Master Naturalist State Committee and was a volunteer naturalist at Sea Center Texas Fish Hatchery and Aquarium in Lake Jackson.
Tom and his wife, Sherry, have birded in every continent except Antarctica and have identified about 3000 species of birds.  He is also interested in insects, fungi and many types of fauna and flora.
Tom gave this butterfly talk to Hill Country Master Naturalists last year and the talk received rave reviews.  We hope everyone can join us.

Grant Awarded

The Kerrville chapter of the NPSOT recently awarded a grant of $250 to the Hunt Garden Club and Hunt School Discovery Gardens Project to support a new focus for Hunt students on learning about and actually growing native plants. This week’s edition of The Current featured a front-page picture of the Hunt students actually planting the plants in the gardens with a special thank you to the Kerrville Chapter of NPSOT.

IN MEMORY OF ERNEST TREMAYNE

The Native Plant Society has lost one of its early presidents and faithful members, Ernest Tremayne. Ernest was one of those behind the scenes, quiet, determined persons who saw things that had to be done and got them done.

Ernest's love of plants and gardening can be seen at the Butterfly Theater/Garden at Kerrville-Schreiner Park. He designed the garden and oversaw the installation and faithfully tended it until cancer struck last fall.
Ernest will be remembered by so many of our members for his quiet generous nature. He will be missed.

Library Native Plant Garden

Library Garden News

Everything is growing rapidly in the Library Garden.  Last month we had five NPSOT members help keep the garden looking good, and we accomplished a lot in less than two hours.  The next Library Garden work time will be Wednesday, June 6 at 8:30 until about 10:30.  This is the day after the NPSOT meeting.  The garden is primarily in the shade so it shouldn’t be hot in the morning.
