LaBahia Chapter |
|
| The Native Plant Society of Texas
(NPSOT) is a non-profit organization with the goal to promote the
conservation, research and utilization of the native plants and plant
habitats of Texas, through education, outreach and example.
|
The LaBahia Chapter supports Brenham, Texas and surrounding areas
including Brazos, Burleson, Colorado, Fayette, Waller and Washington counties.
We normally meet Quarterly on the third Tuesday of the month at 7:00 pm in
January, April, July and October. Most meetings will
be held at the
Student Center on the
Blinn
College campus or at the
Antique Rose Emporium
in the Chapel unless otherwise noted. Our meetings are free of charge and
open to the public. Join us for informative discussions and guest speakers
on native plants that are specifically suited to the distinctive and unique
environments in this area and throughout Texas along with other topics that are
of interested to our members.
Our Next Meeting:
Butterflies and Their Food Plants in a Small Corner of Washington County
Our next LaBahia presentation will take us on a journey of investigation and discovery to learn about some beautiful and amazing butterflies and the native plants they depend on. Join us as Joe Floyd, Washington County resident and butterfly enthusiast, introduces us to a host of local butterfly species and discusses some of the interesting aspects of their complex relationships with native plants.
Bio: Joe Floyd is a current resident of Washington County. He grew up in Georgia and started studying butterflies from the age of ten. He received degrees in Chemical Engineering and Organic Chemistry from Georgia Tech and subsequently moved to the Houston area to work for Exxon in the chemical research field. Upon retiring Joe and his wife, Mary purchased 26 acres in Washington County where he has been able to continue his lifelong interest in butterflies and moths by studying, collecting, and documenting the many species encountered. In addition to his passion for butterflies and moths, he has more recently become interested in xeric plants native to Texas, focusing on agaves, cacti, and yuccas and he has actually built several `cactus beds' for his collections! He also loves vegetable gardening and continues to pursue this primarily from his Houston home.
