Tonkawa Chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas, (NPSOT)

Welcome to our web site

The purpose of the Native Plant Society of Texas (NPSOT) is to promote the conservation, research, and utilization of native plants through education, outreach, and example.

The purpose of the Tonkawa Chapter is to support the purpose of NPSOT and to provide opportunities for members and guests to learn of, and appreciate the use of, native plants in their landscapes.
The Bluebonnet is not only the official state flower of Texas is is also the logo for NPSOT. Our featured plant is the Texas Madrone (Naked Indian) shone on the two pictures at left. Thanks to Sally and Andy Wasowski for the pictures. It is a remarkeable beautiful tree and I would love to have one in my landscape; however, so far I have not been successful in growing one. It is not the easiest tree to transplant even though it grows out of limestone. It has a thin bark which peals away in the fall revealing a soft, cream colored new bark. The color then changes several more times during the year when it starts the process over again. The fall fruits are clusters of bright red and I suspect are a favorite of birds.
