The meeting begins at 7:00 PM.  The guest presentation begins after a short business meeting. \n\n\n\n[Updated Nov 12] About our topic: It’s time to up the biodiversity in your life and grasslands are a great way to do so! \n\n\n\n[Updated Nov 12] About our speaker: About our speaker: John Hart Asher has over 15 years of experience designing and building functional ecosystems within urban conditions. He has conducted basic research in ecological engineering\, ecological restoration\, and land management\, offered workshops to professionals and the general public\, and provided fee-supported ecological consulting expertise to clients across Texas. As part of the consulting team at Blackland Collaborative\, John Hart works with integrated design teams composed of engineers\, architects\, landscape architects\, and developers to integrate sustainable design\, practices\, and philosophies into projects. He specializes in translating sustainable design into successful projects that provide varying layers of ecosystem services. His main interest is the application of ecological design\, resulting in functional sustainable landscapes within urban ecologies. A few of his current projects include: Tall grass prairie restoration in an urban riparian corridor\, native prairie green roof design\, residential pocket prairies\, sustainable roadsides\, and green infrastructure. \n\n\n\nJohn Hart worked on the green roof design and implementation for Bercy Chen Studio’s Edgeland House\, which was featured in Dwell and Texas Architect magazines and has won several awards\, including Architizer’s A+ Jury and Popular Choice Awards\, the 2016 Design Award of Excellence from Green Roofs for Healthy Cities and the Texas Society of Architects 2016 Design Award. Edgeland House was also featured in Phaidon’s “Elemental Living: Contemporary Houses in Nature\,” and most recently was documented in AppleTV’s HOME series that explores exemplary and innovative designs. He holds a bachelor’s in history from the University of Mississippi and a master’s in landscape architecture from The University of Texas at Austin\, which awarded him a President’s Outstanding Staff Award in April 2018. He’s a dedicated environmental professional who specializes in bridging design concepts and ecological function and demonstrates strong project management skills with the proven ability to design\, assess\, and investigate landscape restoration installations\, performance\, and measures. He has carried out research and development of green roof technology with the aim of improving performance and application within semi-arid\, sub-tropical climates\, and has helped design and build numerous native prairie green roofs all over the state of Texas. In 2019 he also stepped in to serve as host of the nationally syndicated PBS show\, Central Texas Gardener. Learning just a few common roots for form\, size\, color\, origins\, shape and habitat can help you decipher those names and choose the right plant for the right place\, save you time and money\, and lead to a whole new avenue of enjoyment in your gardening life. We’ll keep it fun and simple\, so don’t let your fear of Latin keep you away. (Reference handouts included.)Carol Clark is an amateur botany enthusiast\, a Monarch Watch Conservation Specialist\, a Texas Master Naturalist\, and longtime member of the Native Plant Society of Texas. She and her husband own and operate Clark Haven\, a wildlife preserve and custom wildflower seed business in Cooke County.  She has been messing about with plants ever since she can remember. DESCRIPTION:Before you start all of your Thanksgiving festivities\, join us for one of favorite annual events! If you have native plants\, you likely have some new seedlings that have popped up\, clumps that need to be divided\, and seed heads to collect. Gather them up and trade them for some new species! This is always a fun event. What’s better than free plants\, right?  \n\n\n\nPlease only bring specimens that are locally native to Harris County or the Gulf Coast ecoregion and label them if you can. You can also bring other useful plant-related materials you don’t need any more like books or tools. \n\n\n\nThis is a great opportunity to network with your fellow NPSOT-H members\, meet the board\, and enjoy time with other native plant enthusiasts. We hope you can join us! We will be providing Star Pizza; please bring your favorite sharable dish for the meal if you are able. \n\n\n\nNote that we are starting earlier to allow extra time for the dinner. DESCRIPTION:The Clear Lake Chapter’s annual Holiday Potluck will be held in the Forest Room of the Bayou Building on the UHCL campus. The party will include a garden gift exchange (unwrapped)\, a native plant bingo and a delicious potluck supper\, annual awards\, and lots more! \n\n\n\nPotluck\n\n\n\nYou may bring your own meal if you would rather not participate in the potluck dishes. Everyone will need to bring their own cup or glass\, plate\, and silverware. Iced tea and water will be available. \n\n\n\nTo avoid everyone bringing a delicious desert\, it is suggested that if your last name begins with: \n\n\n\nA – D: bring a Main DishE – J: bring a DessertK – P: bring an AppetizerQ – Z: bring a Salad \n\n\n\nGift Exchange\n\n\n\nPlease bring an unwrapped native plant or gardening related gift to participate in the gift exchange. She graduated from Sam Houston State University with a bachelor’s degree in plant and soil sciences. She is an ISA Certified arborist with specialized qualifications in tree risk assessment and Oak Wilt management. \n\n\n\nRachel has worked as an arborist in the Houston region\, managing work from tree removals and pruning to fertilization and planting. Rachel has a passion for empowering communities through education and outreach to help people understand the vital role trees play in urban environment and how to effectively care for them. \n\n\n\nOur meetings start with a social time at 6:00pm. DESCRIPTION:Join NPSOT-Williamson County on Thursday\, January 8\, 2026\, when our featured topic will be Protecting Dark Skies for Plants and All Living Things with Cindy Luongo Cassidy. Free and open to the public. The meeting begins at 7:00 PM.  The guest presentation begins after a short business meeting. \n\n\n\nAbout our topic: Cindy’s talk will explore the natural world and the processes that depend on the absence of artificial light. It will include a number of species but will emphasize issues that plants have with artificial lighting. Issues of navigation\, reproduction\, circadian rhythms\, photoperiodism\, competition\, predation\, and general habitat protection will be covered. Cindy will also touch on some issues that humans have with artificial light at night. The talk wraps up with a review of what each of us can do to protect living things during the nighttime. \n\n\n\nAbout our speaker: Cindy Luongo Cassidy is the leader of DarkSky Texas\, formerly known as The Texas Chapter of the International Dark-Sky Association\, a founding member of several night sky groups\, and a Hays County Master Naturalist. She has twenty-five plus years of experience as a lighting consultant and dark sky advocate\, was the key player in positioning the City of Dripping Springs to receive the prestigious International Dark Sky Community designation (the first in Texas)\, and has assisted numerous other International Dark Sky Place applications in Texas. In 2019\, Cindy was awarded the Crawford-Hunter Lifetime Achievement Award\, the highest honor that DarkSky International bestows on individuals who\, during their lifetime\, have contributed an extraordinary effort to light pollution abatement. How can we encourage the use of more native plants in our community and still make HOAs happy? \n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker\n\n\n\nDiane Wetherbee is a Texas Master Naturalist\, as well as a member of the Native Prairies Association of Texas and the Native Plant Society of Texas. She is a board member of the Upper Trinity Conservation Trust and also serves as vice chairman of the board of The Flower Mound Foundation\, which cares for the 12.5-acre prairie remnant that gives the town its name. Diane is a Certified Citizen Forester and is a board member of the Cross Timbers Urban Forestry Council. After a career in corporate communications and product marketing\, she turned to her first love – the natural world. She was an interpretive naturalist and environmental educator at LLELA for 12 years and has completed coursework toward a Ph.D. in forestry at Stephen F. Austin State University. In her spare time\, she serves as a member of Lantana’s Denton County Fresh Water Supply District 7 Board of Directors and is the chairman of the Lantana HOA Architectural Review Committee. \n\n\n\nIn-person – Parking Pass Required\n\n\n\nClear Lake Chapter Members: If you have a pass\, don’t forget it – you will not get another one if you picked one up previously.
