SUMMARY:Native Plants in Houston: Building a Local Supply Chain for a Growing Market - March 20
DESCRIPTION:Matt Stahman will discuss the state of local native plant supplies\, the markets for those supplies\, and the need and formation of a supply chain for future markets for native plants and native plant materials. \n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker \n\n\n\nMatt serves as a Regulatory Director for Resource Environmental Solutions (RES) where he specializes in wetlands and endangered species related ecological restoration projects\, especially those associated with mitigation\, and is a registered Professional Wetland Scientist and past president of the Society of Wetland Scientists South Central Chapter (Texas\, Oklahoma\, Arkansas\, Louisiana\, Mississippi\, Alabama) as well as a Certified Ecological Restoration Practitioner through the Society for Ecological Restoration. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThroughout his career\, he has worked on the design\, permitting\, project management\, construction\, and monitoring of multiple ecological restoration projects\, including wetland mitigation banks and consolidated mitigation areas. He has 30 years of experience in Clean Water Act permitting and mitigation\, Endangered Species Act consultations\, National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) environmental impact assessments\, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) filings\, and obtaining various other federal\, state\, and local environmental permits. Matt has worked throughout the United States\, providing environmental compliance consulting for various industries including oil and gas\, public transportation\, telecommunications\, electric utility\, coal mining\, and land development. In his spare time\, he works evenings and weekends for his mom\, who started Stahman Native Plants in 2024\, to develop supplies for native plant hay and other materials for the Houston area. \n\n\n\nOur monthly chapter meetings are held on every 3rd Thursday\, January – November. BILLY TEELS \n\n\n\nDr. Teels will be structuring his presentation around his struggle with his homeowner’s association on creating a more natural yard.  If you are in an HOA you know the importance of working with and around their rules and/or changing some rules.  For many people it can be a battle.   \n\n\n\nDr. Teels is extremely plant-knowledgeable and this presentation will be beneficial whether you not you’re in an HOA as he is discussing how we can help different types of wildlife in our yards. \n\n\n\nDr. Teels served for over 30 years as a biologist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture\, Natural Resources Conservation Service in Mississippi\, Oklahoma\, Maryland and Washington\, D.C.  He received his Ph.D. in wildlife ecology from Mississippi State University in 1975.  He currently lives in Granbury\, Texas and has been a member of the Rio Brazos Master Naturalists since 2007.

DESCRIPTION:The Cross Timbers Chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas invites you to join us for a presentation by Jessie Woodall\, NPSOT member and director of Bat World Cross Timbers! Jessie will introduce us to the world of Texas bats and how Texas native plants can help with the survival of our native bats. \n\n\n\nBat World Cross Timbers\, an official Bat World Sanctuary Rescue Center\, opened in 2024. They are a non-profit volunteer organization. Over the last 8 years as a subpermittee Jessie has helped raccoons\, squirrels\, and opossums. When her boys found an Eastern Red mama with three pups in their backyard six years ago\, she discovered a tremendous need for protecting our native bats. Jessie worked diligently with Kate from Bat World MidCities and received her permit in 2021 specializing in bats. A retired Senior Director in the telecommunications industry (2015)\, he has since dedicated himself to understanding nature and advocating for biodiversity through citizen science and iNaturalist. \n\n\n\nBoth presenters are avid photographers who continually refine their skills to document the biodiversity around us. He started as an intern after graduating from Austin College in Sherman\, TX with a degree in Environmental Studies. He is among the many driving forces behind production systems on the farm\, offsite harvests\, and land restoration projects. His ability to read the land\, identify what it needs and create a comprehensive plan for its restoration is a huge part of Native American Seed’s success. \n\n\n\nHe has helped lead riparian restoration projects for San Antonio River Authority and U.S. Army Core of Engineers where NAS did extensive training with staff and created an Operations and Maintenance guide for the long-term care of the project. Other clients include IBM\, HEB Foundation\, Audubon Society\, Texas Parks and Wildlife and Attwater Prairie Chicken National Wildlife Preserve.

He is working to document the Texas and Southwest firefly diversity and its natural history regarding their life cycle\, preferred habitat and unique flash patterns. His research is helping to illuminate much of this never before collected information about Texas’s incredibly rich firefly diversity so that others can work to preserve and enjoy it. \n\n\n\nBen is a member of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Firefly Working group. Bring your own beverage. \n\n\n\nThe Exploration Green Phase 3A pollinator garden aims to change the expectations of the public and ways people interact with pollinator gardens. The 3A garden started with a grant from the Clear Lake Chapter of the Native Plant Society in September 2024 and is expanding this spring with an additional grant received from H-E-B/Texas Master Naturalist’s Pollinators for Texas initiative. It is a long-term pollinator habitat within the conservancy where volunteers and the public can observe a variety of native plants and their relationships with resident and migrant animals\, as well as omnipresent environmental factors like heat\, wind\, rain\, snow\, and drought. Plant information is part of the design\, and data is collected and evaluated. The aim of these data is to help this garden and others in our area evolve season by season and year by year. This presentation will highlight the challenges\, successes\, and surprises from the first six months and look ahead to the future with the hope of inspiring more members to create public gardens. \n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker\n\n\n\n\nAfter a lifetime in the Houston area spent toiling for oil and gas\, Lynn Porfirio discovered a passion for green volunteer work starting with Trees for Houston\, Galveston Bay Foundation\, and SPLASh. In 2023\, she became a member of Galveston Bay Area Texas Master Naturalist and Native Plant Society to learn about different volunteer opportunities and better understand the nature of the region. The following year\, Lynn completed the Native Landscape Certification Program. DESCRIPTION:Join us at our April chapter meeting where we take a fun look at the who\, what\, where\, when\, why\, and how of native plants. We will grow your native plant vocabulary\, cultivate some knowledge\, and sow some seeds for the change we want to see in the world. Whether you are a native plant novice or a wildscaping whiz\, this will be a great chance to ask questions all the questions you may have been afraid to ask before. If you stump the board member presenters\, we can poll the crowd or add things to our list of future presentation topics! \n\n\n\nOne of our goals this year is to grow our membership\, and this is a great opportunity to bring a friend\, spouse\, grandchild\, or whoever wants to learn more about native plants.  \n\n\n\nAbout the Speakers – Doreen Gallevo and Josh Kelly \n\n\n\nDoreen has been a board member for the Houston Chapter since 2023\, and was elected chapter president this year. She has been a hard core native plant gardener for seven years\, and is passionate about all ecological services plants provide like supporting declining invertebrate populations\, flood mitigation\, cooling\, and carbon capture. Having completed NPSOT’s Native Landscape Certification Program (NLCP)\, she is now engaging in native landscape design projects. Containing well over 100 native species\, her yard is registered as a National Wildlife Federation habitat\, Houston Audubon bird-friendly space\, Texas Pocket Prairie\, and Homegrown National Park.  \n\n\n\nJosh is a native Houstonian and recently became our chapter vice president. He is a commercial landscape construction project manager and is determined to change how our landscape industry functions from the inside. In his spare time\, he can be found botanizing in prairies or volunteering his time on native landscaping projects. He loves not only Texas native plants\, but also Texas critters\, like longhorns and the majestic raptors he has rescued from prairies. He even likes non-native bees\, who he helped tend as a teen/young adult with his father and brothers.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur monthly chapter meetings are held on every 3rd Thursday\, January – November. DESCRIPTION:Joining us for April’s meeting of the Cross Timbers Chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas\, will be Suzanne Tuttle presenting Uncommon Wildflowers of the LBJ Grasslands! \n\n\n\nSuzanne Tuttle:Suzanne is a plant ecologist who retired from the Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge in 2016 after a 23-year career\, first as Natural Resource Manager and later as its Director. She implemented restoration projects in prairies\, wetlands\, and riparian gallery forests. Tuttle also oversaw the management of the Refuge’s bison herd\, worked on several prairie dog reintroductions\, and co-developed the feral hog control program. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Biology from UT Arlington and an Associate of Applied Science degree in Horticulture from Tarrant County Junior College (now TCC). She has taught classes for various chapters of the Texas Master Naturalist program since 1999 and is currently serving on the Board of Directors of the Fort Worth Chapter of NPAT and the John Bunker Wetland Center in Combine TX. Prior to that\, she coordinated NPSOT’s Native Landscape Certification Program for 7 years. \n\n\n\nFor many years she worked in the field of environmental health and safety for medical device manufacturing facilities and other organizations.  \n\n\n\nShe has a Bachelor’s in Biology\, secondary science teaching certification\, and a Master’s in Public Administration.  \n\n\n\nMeg’s passion for native plants began in 2000 when she and her family built their home on a 2-acre parcel of land near Dripping Springs. Her knowledge of ecology and their decision to be solely dependent on a rainwater system drove their decision to restore their property with natives.  \n\n\n\nShe is a long-time member of the Native Plant Society of Texas (NPSOT)\, serving as Austin NPSOT Chapter President and other positions on the board for several years. Other favorite organizations include the Native Prairies Association of Texas and the Texas Society for Ecological Restoration. Wizzie is a Board-Certified Entomologist specializing in urban and structural pest management\, but also covers landscapes\, gardens\, native pollinators\, insect identification as well as other topics. This session is designed to equip participants with the knowledge and confidence to teach about Monarch butterflies in outdoor and other low-tech settings using just two waterproofed posters. \n\n\n\nIn the first hour\, Carol will provide an in-depth look at Monarch migration\, life cycle\, their needs\, and the importance of Texas to this species.
