(Bill) Van Auken has been a professor at UTSA for over forty years. Dr. Van Auken earned a Master of Science and Ph.D degrees from the University of Utah. Since 1969 he has lived and worked in Central Texas as a Researcher and Professor in the fields of plant ecology and biology. His research interests include physiological plant ecology and woody plants. His impact on conservation and natural resources extends throughout the region and beyond.

Due to the weather forecast for Central Texas on Thursday evening\, this January 9 meeting will now be held only by Zoom and not in-person.  \n\n\n\nJoin NPSOT-Williamson County on Thursday\, January 9\, 2025\, when our featured topic will be “Creating a Native Seed Library in your Community” with Craig Bruska.  Free and open to the public. The meeting begins at 7:00 PM.  The guest presentation begins after a short business meeting.  \n\n\n\nAbout our topic: Craig’s talk will discuss how to create a native seed library within your community. From building local buzz and getting your library to partner on the project to establishing scientific and common name indexes and creating needed documents\, as well as the benefits and the challenges. \n\n\n\nAbout our speaker: Craig has had a lifelong love of nature from visiting scores of National Parks across the country on family vacations. During his 40-year career in construction\, engineering\, and facilities he worked for eight years for the Lake County (IL) Forest Preserve District overseeing the maintenance and construction of over 100 miles of multi-use county wide trails in the 35\,000 acre preserve system. He oversaw the restoration over 1\,000 acres of wetlands by removing field tiles. His crews battled invasive species from European Buckthorn to Purple Loosestrife.  \n\n\n\nSince moving to Texas in 2019 and settling into New Braunfels in 2020 he has worked to learn the plants of the Blackland Prairie and Edwards Plateau. This includes attending various lectures and symposiums on Native Texas Plants. He has also completed the Native Plant Society of Texas – Native Landscaping Certification Program and is a Texas Master Naturalist. Craig has helped create native seed libraries in Comal\, Hays\, and Guadalupe counties and is working on adding two more. He is also the NPSOT State Chair of the Native Seed Committee. \n\n\n\nJan 6 News! An ecologist by trade\, Adam holds degrees in ecology and evolutionary biology as well as business from Rice University. DESCRIPTION:Chapter member Gwen Williams\, will be sharing tips on growing and propagating native yaupon trees.  These are wonderful native trees that provide great habitat and food for birds. Gwen is incredibly knowledgeable and is sure to inspire us to add these amazing native trees to our landscapes.  \n\n\n\nThe Yaupon holly will keep its leaves to bring form and green to a winter-scape. The Possumhaw holly retains its brilliant berries well into the winter which makes for some wonderful red for the holidays. \n\n\n\nBoth hollies are Texas natives and grow easily in Parker County\, and the Cross Timbers eco region. SUMMARY:Transform Your Lawn into Native Plant Haven and Photography Studio
DESCRIPTION:Driven by a commitment to water conservation and wildlife support\, Arlon Motsch replaced his traditional grass lawn with a variety of Texas native plants. He will share how he overcame the challenges of plant selection and community skepticism\, while enhancing his home’s aesthetics and sparking a passion for insect photography at the January 28 meeting of the Fredericksburg chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas (NPSOT Fredericksburg). The meeting starts at 6:30 with a social time and the presentation begins at 7 p.m. \n\n\n\n“The vibrant ecosystem Arlon cultivated has provided the perfect setting for capturing detailed images of pollinators and other insects\,” said Jonathan Watt\, new Board President of the Fredericksburg chapter of NPSOT. “His photography\, which now serves as both a creative endeavor and an educational tool\, highlights the ecological value of native plants.” \n\n\n\n“I’m looking forward to sharing the things that worked and those that didn’t while converting our lawn into a pollinator paradise\,” said Motsch. “I’m also going to share a lot of close-up insect photos and discuss the potential for homeowners to create sustainable landscapes that benefit both the environment and their personal hobbies.” \n\n\n\nMotsch has lived near Center Point for seven years and moved there from Midland\, TX. He is an avid amateur photographer who has embraced the world of digital photography on many levels. He is well versed in many types of photography\, but has a strong personal interest in macro\, close-up\, wildlife and nature. He is retired and enjoys the outdoors\, is an avid hiker\, and enjoys kayaking\, van camping and road tripping with camera in hand. He has been known to leave water behind on hikes to carry more camera gear\, make U-turns on interstates to take a picture\, drive many miles down dirt roads to take a picture\, lay in mud\, ants\, and briars to take a picture\, and landscape his yard for bug pictures.  \n\n\n\nNPSOT Fredericksburg holds its monthly meetings on the 4th Tuesday of the month at St. Joseph’s Halle (212 W. San Antonio St.\, Fredericksburg). SUMMARY:Austin Chapter Meeting - Backyard Birds with Natasia Moore
DESCRIPTION:In this presentation\, Natasia will talk about the importance of birds\, how they’re affected by urbanization\, and ways in which we as residents can provide habitat for birds in our backyards. She will give examples of some of our common urban and suburban birds\, including birds of prey\, as well as some native plants that are beneficial to birds. She will also discuss some of the challenges to keep in mind when providing supplemental resources\, such as food\, water\, and shelter. \n\n\n\nNatasia Moore received her Bachelor’s degree in Natural Resources Management and a Master’s degree in Wildlife\, Aquatics\, and Wildland Science and Management from Texas Tech University. She is currently an Urban Wildlife Biologist with Texas Parks and Wildlife\, where she performs professional planning\, management\, research and public outreach associated with wildlife\, habitat and natural resource management specific to the Greater Austin area. DESCRIPTION:We are excited to have natural resources planner and ecologist Elizabeth McGreevy present at our Tuesday February 4th chapter meeting! \n\n\n\nFor 100 years\, we’ve fought the woody brush that spreads across limestone regions of Texas called karst country.  Much of this woody cover consists of mountain cedars\, a type of juniper that prefers limestone. Instead of causing harm\, we now know mountain cedars are benefitting the region since they regenerate degraded karst country or sustain groundwaters\, healthy soils\, deep carbon storage\, biodiversity\, while reducing fire risk and flooding. You will learn why we need to use mountain cedars and other nature-based solutions to help regenerate and protect these lands.  \n\n\n\nElizabeth McGreevy\, a sixth-generation Texas and Texas A&M graduate\, is a natural resources ecologist and author of the book “Wanted! Mountain Cedars\, Dead and Alive“. As the owner of Land Steward\, she relies on more than 25 years of experience to produce site-specific ecosystem management plans for Hill Country landowners. In 2022\, she founded Project Bedrock\, now in partnership with The Watershed Association\, to promote using mountain cedars and other nature-based solutions to regenerate the limestone karst country regions of Texas.

DESCRIPTION:This talk focuses on urban forestry\, particularly in the Greater Houston area\, and the importance of planting native trees in city landscapes. Dr. Stephen Cook shares practical experience and tips from his reforestation efforts in the Montrose super neighborhood\, discusses urban heat island effect\, introduces several beneficial native tree species to consider for city projects\, and provides resources for those interested in native urban forestry. \n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker \n\n\n\nDr. Stephen T. Cook is a Texas Master Naturalist\, educator\, and passionate advocate for the reintroduction of native trees in our urban communities. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur monthly chapter meetings are held on every 3rd Thursday\, January – November.
