SUMMARY:Propagation Techniques for Native Hollies\, Cross Timbers Chapter Meeting (Weatherford)- Tuesday 1/28/2025
DESCRIPTION:Chapter member Gwen Williams\, will be sharing tips on growing and propagating native yaupon trees.  These are wonderful native trees that provide great habitat and food for birds. Gwen is incredibly knowledgeable and is sure to inspire us to add these amazing native trees to our landscapes.  \n\n\n\nThe Yaupon holly will keep its leaves to bring form and green to a winter-scape. The Possumhaw holly retains its brilliant berries well into the winter which makes for some wonderful red for the holidays. \n\n\n\nBoth hollies are Texas natives and grow easily in Parker County\, and the Cross Timbers eco region. They are host plants for the Henry’s Elfin Butterfly and attract a wide variety of butterflies\, birds\, small mammals\, and nectar insects. \n\n\n\nIf you would like to learn more about these wonderful native shrubs and how to propagate and care for them\, come join us at our January meeting! \n\n\n\nMeeting Details: \n\n\n\n6:00pm Chapter Business Meeting \n\n\n\n6:30pm Monthly Feature Presentation \n\n\n\nThis educational event is open to the public. \n\n\n\nLocation: Mount Pleasant Historical School\, 213 Raymond George Way\, Weatherford\, Texas. \n\n\n\n\n6:00 p.m. Chapter Business Meeting and Update on Native Plant Sale\n\n\n\n6:30 p.m. Native plant swap

SUMMARY:Transform Your Lawn into Native Plant Haven and Photography Studio
DESCRIPTION:Driven by a commitment to water conservation and wildlife support\, Arlon Motsch replaced his traditional grass lawn with a variety of Texas native plants. He will share how he overcame the challenges of plant selection and community skepticism\, while enhancing his home’s aesthetics and sparking a passion for insect photography at the January 28 meeting of the Fredericksburg chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas (NPSOT Fredericksburg). The meeting starts at 6:30 with a social time and the presentation begins at 7 p.m. \n\n\n\n“The vibrant ecosystem Arlon cultivated has provided the perfect setting for capturing detailed images of pollinators and other insects\,” said Jonathan Watt\, new Board President of the Fredericksburg chapter of NPSOT. “His photography\, which now serves as both a creative endeavor and an educational tool\, highlights the ecological value of native plants.” \n\n\n\n“I’m looking forward to sharing the things that worked and those that didn’t while converting our lawn into a pollinator paradise\,” said Motsch. “I’m also going to share a lot of close-up insect photos and discuss the potential for homeowners to create sustainable landscapes that benefit both the environment and their personal hobbies.” \n\n\n\nMotsch has lived near Center Point for seven years and moved there from Midland\, TX. He is an avid amateur photographer who has embraced the world of digital photography on many levels. He is well versed in many types of photography\, but has a strong personal interest in macro\, close-up\, wildlife and nature. He is retired and enjoys the outdoors\, is an avid hiker\, and enjoys kayaking\, van camping and road tripping with camera in hand. He has been known to leave water behind on hikes to carry more camera gear\, make U-turns on interstates to take a picture\, drive many miles down dirt roads to take a picture\, lay in mud\, ants\, and briars to take a picture\, and landscape his yard for bug pictures. \n\n\n\nNPSOT Fredericksburg holds its monthly meetings on the 4th Tuesday of the month at St. Joseph’s Halle (212 W. San Antonio St.\, Fredericksburg). There is a social time with snacks at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting starts at 7 p.m. The public is invited to attend in person and via online streaming (https://www.youtube.com/@fredericksburgtexasnativeg4884). More information is online at Facebook (@fbgtxnpsot)\, Instagram (@npsot_fredericksburg_chapter)\, and https://npsot.org/chapters/fredericksburg/. Meetings are free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:San Antonio Chapter Meeting - Stressed Out: A Look at Tree Health in San Antonio and How to Strengthen Our Urban Landscape
DESCRIPTION:Arrive at 6:30pm to share or find native plants at the Plants x Donation table. \n\n\n\nThis will be a “hybrid” meeting\, attend in-person or online. \n\n\n\n\nIn person: The Gathering Center at the Urban Ecology Center at Phil Hardberger Park\, 8400 NW Military Hwy\n\n\n\nOnline: Please register in advance to attend via Zoom.\n\n\n\n\nPresentation by Michael Nentwich. Stressed Out: A Look at Tree Health in San Antonio and How to Strengthen Our Urban Landscape.\n\n\n\nJoin us for a discussion about the stresses on our urban forest in San Antonio with Bexar Branches Alliance President Michael Nentwich. Is it the extreme heat during the summer\, the extended heat waves\, the severe cold events\, the extended drought\, or all of it? Once we can identify and name the stresses\, let’s consider what we can do to maintain tree health and diversity in Bexar County. \n\n\n\nMichael has more than 15 years of experience in community forestry management and program development. Currently the President and founder of Bexar Branches Alliance\, Michael previously was San Antonio’s first City Forester and later served as City Forester with the City of Norfolk\, Virginia. He has a BA in Environmental Science and MS in Forestry from Stephen F. Austin University. \n\n\n\nIf you are attending in person\, there is no need to register. However\, if you are attending via Zoom\, please register here before the meeting begins as late registration and entry will not be allowed. SUMMARY:Chapter Meeting\, Hunke Hall\, 33 Herff Farm Road\, 6:00-8:00
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to have natural resources planner and ecologist Elizabeth McGreevy present at our Tuesday February 4th chapter meeting! \n\n\n\nFor 100 years\, we’ve fought the woody brush that spreads across limestone regions of Texas called karst country.  Much of this woody cover consists of mountain cedars\, a type of juniper that prefers limestone. Instead of causing harm\, we now know mountain cedars are benefitting the region since they regenerate degraded karst country or sustain groundwaters\, healthy soils\, deep carbon storage\, biodiversity\, while reducing fire risk and flooding. You will learn why we need to use mountain cedars and other nature-based solutions to help regenerate and protect these lands.  \n\n\n\nElizabeth McGreevy\, a sixth-generation Texas and Texas A&M graduate\, is a natural resources ecologist and author of the book “Wanted! Mountain Cedars\, Dead and Alive“. As the owner of Land Steward\, she relies on more than 25 years of experience to produce site-specific ecosystem management plans for Hill Country landowners. In 2022\, she founded Project Bedrock\, now in partnership with The Watershed Association\, to promote using mountain cedars and other nature-based solutions to regenerate the limestone karst country regions of Texas.

SUMMARY:The Tree Collectors: Tales of Arboreal Obsession – Williamson County Chapter Meeting\, February 13
DESCRIPTION:Join NPSOT-Williamson County on Thursday\, February 13\, 2025\, when our featured topic will be “The Tree Collectors: Tales of Arboreal Obsession” with NYT best-selling author Amy Stewart. Free and open to the public. The meeting begins at 7:00 PM.  The guest presentation begins after a short business meeting. \n\n\n\nOur guest speaker will be joining us via Zoom. This month’s presentation will not be recorded for YouTube.  \n\n\n\nAbout our topic: When Amy Stewart discovered a community of tree collectors\, she expected to meet horticultural fanatics driven to plant every species of oak or maple. But she also discovered that the urge to collect trees springs from something deeper and more profound: a longing for community\, a vision for the future\, or a path to healing and reconciliation. \n\n\n\nIn this 45-minute talk\, Amy introduces audiences to several of the remarkable people she met from around the world whose lives were transformed by their relationships to trees. Accompanied by her own hand-drawn illustrations of people and their trees\, this talk inspires audiences to reconsider their own connections to trees – and maybe start a collection! \n\n\n\nAbout our speaker: Amy Stewart is the New York Times best-selling author of fourteen books\, including The Tree Collectors\, The Drunken Botanist\, Wicked Plants\, and several other popular nonfiction titles about the natural world. She lives in Portland\, Oregon. \n\n\n\nNOTE: this month’s in-person location is the Georgetown Public Library\, 2nd Floor\, 402 W 8th St\, Georgetown\, Texas 78626.  Come early (6:30 PM) for expert advice\, to check out the seed swap board\, or just to visit. \n\n\n\n==> To attend via Zoom\, register at https://npsot-org.zoom.us/meeting/register/A_RDWrA4Qr2WIFIDHNRSiw#/registration \n\n\n\nThe original meeting announcement is here on the Williamson County Chapter’s blog page.

The challenge for many comes in how to start\, where to get plants\, and how to best care for them. Naturalist and educator Craig Hensley will share his journey into the world of native plants\, from growing them to enjoying the flush of pollinators and other critters that were invited back\, as a result. He’ll share his observations of what species seem preferred by his “new neighbors\,” as well as what you might expect by venturing into this life and community-altering adventure. \n\n\n\nCraig Hensley is a lifelong learner\, naturalist and educator\, having spent more than 40 years engaging audiences from Minnesota to Texas about the wonders of the natural world from birds and butterflies to the night sky\, native plants\, and everything in-between. He has developed a knack for growing a wide variety of native plants and through those planted in his and wife Terry Lashley’s yard has invited a ever-increasing diversity of fauna\, from bees\, butterflies\, flies\, wasps\, moths and beetles to those critters that eat them\, and those that eat those. Craig has a B.S. in Fisheries and Wildlife Management and a M.S. in Zoology\, and has worked for Texas Parks and Wildlife Department for more than a decade\, as an interpreter and resource specialist at Guadalupe River State Park and for the past five years as one of two Texas Nature Trackers Biologists.
