DESCRIPTION:We had to cancel the January 27 meeting due to the residues of the snow/ice storm in the Hill Country. But Kathy Saucier\, our Gillespie County resident Certified Wildscape instructor\, will still make a live presentation on YouTube on January 30 at 3:00 pm. \n\n\n\n\n“Do you see those tiny rosettes that are nestled against the earth? Each one is soaking up sunshine.”  \n\n\n\n\n\nA closer look under the fallen stems and leaves of last year’s wildflowers and grasses reveals that many new plants have already germinated and are showing their first and second sets of leaves. \n\n\n\n\n\n“Each one is converting winter moisture into the wondrous explosion of color that makes the Hill Country famous for its wildflower display” Saucier said. What you don’t see is what the plant will produce. Will it be a plant you desire or one you are trying to control? \n\n\n\n\nDuring this evening presentation\, Saucier will open our eyes to the variety of rosettes that are the opening scene of summer’s perennials. We meet the first Tuesday of each month. \n\n\n\nSpeaker: Brenda Fest \n\n\n\nTopic: Botany Basics – An Introduction to Plant Families \n\n\n\nBrenda Fest is an active member of the Boerne Chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas (NPSOT). She is an instructor for NPSOT Boerne’s Native Landscape Certification Program (NLCP). She also is an active volunteer for the Hill Country Master Naturalist Chapter\, and a certified Texas Master Naturalist. She has always enjoyed gardening with native plants that attract butterflies and support our natural ecosystem.  \n\n\n\nBrenda grew up in San Antonio\, moved to Austin\, and earned her degree in Botany as well as her Master’s and Ph.D. in Science Education at the University of Texas\, Austin. She taught science at various high schools in Texas and was a science learning specialist at the University of Texas Learning Center. She and her husband\, Gary\, moved to Pipe Creek\, Texas in 2003 and Brenda taught biology and aquatic science at Clark High school in San Antonio until she retired in 2014. \n\n\n\nBrenda’s presentation\, “Botany Basics – An Introduction to Plant Families”\, will give a brief overview about the variety of plants in the plant kingdom. It will discuss how plants are arranged into plant families. A hands-on dissection of flower parts and practice handout will be included. Knowing the basics of plant families is helpful when identifying and understanding native plants.  \n\n\n\nOur meetings start with a social time at 6:00pm. Announcements will begin at 6:45pm\, followed by the presentation. The speaker is Sarah F. Jayne – she is an environmentalist\, educator\, and wildlife advocate. Her book “Nature’s Action Guide: How to Support Biodiversity and Your Local Ecosystem” is a companion to Doug Tallamy’s “Nature’s Best Hope: A New Approach to Conservation That Starts in Your Yard” and features 15 urgent actions to support biodiversity. \n\n\n\nPresentation Summary\n\n\n\nNow more than ever our yards and community spaces need to support biodiversity. How can we ensure that our spaces are both ecologically rich and beautiful? We’ll look at which plants matter most when it comes to your local biodiversity; how to procure them for generous plantings; and how to place them to increase their appeal to wildlife and people\, along with strategies to protect the wildlife our natural plantings attract. We’ll consider strategies to ensure that our landscapes gain community acceptance such that they become invitations for others to transform their landscapes. A cost-conscious\, DIY approach makes taking action doable. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker Bio \n\n\n\nSarah’s work has been featured in The Joe Gardener Show\, A Way to Garden podcast\, Homegrown National Park\, and the New York Times. The meeting begins at 7:00 PM.  The guest presentation begins after a short business meeting. \n\n\n\nAbout our topic: Through macro photographs and stories from the field\, this talk explores the way insects and plants shape one another’s lives\, covering pollination\, predation and the often subtle interplay of their lifecycles. \n\n\n\nAbout our speaker:  Mika Geiger is a macro photographer based in Austin\, Texas\, whose work focuses on the often-overlooked lives of insects. Through close-up images and quiet moments in the field\, she invites people to slow down and see these tiny creatures with curiosity and amazement. Mika is a Texas Master Naturalist and volunteers with projects such as native bee monitoring and the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center fauna survey. SUMMARY:Ancient Dune Swales: An Ode to the Coastal HeritagePreserve - February 19
DESCRIPTION:Often overlooked\, the native plants of our Gulf Coast play a major role in habitat restoration while quite literally holding all of us along the coast together. This presentation will dive into the science behind a diverse set of plants native to the Gulf Coast and zoom in specifically on those that inhabit Galveston Island’s ancient dune swale complex. \n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker \n\n\n\nLyndsey Ware is an eighth generation Texan with deep roots sunk into the Gulf Coast mud from South Texas to New Orleans\, Ware has been talking to and falling in love with plants all her life. While on a brief hiatus away from her native habitat\, she went back to school and earned a Plant and Soil Science (w/conservation and agricultural horticultural focus) degree from the University of Massachusetts. She has worked the land from an early age\, managed greenhouses\, farms\, and labs\, conducted research as a member of the UMass Extension team\, and often acted as a liaison between growers and academia\, agriculturists and conservationists. While away\, her longing for the Texas and Louisiana ecologies she calls home grew. Upon return to the Lone Star State\, Ware managed Green Star Wetland Plant Farm where she learned more about her beloved hydrophytes that helped her dad navigate duck marshes that he dragged her to as a girl. She then became the Conservation Horticulturist at Houston Botanic Garden before landing her ‘dream job’ stewarding 1\,039 acres of wetlands and prairies\, working with a plethora of unique plants at Artist Boat’s Coastal Heritage Preserve. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur monthly chapter meetings are held on every 3rd Thursday\, January – November. Becoming active in the North Central Chapter in 2014\, she became chapter president in 2017 and has served on the statewide State Board of Directors as President-Elect\, President\, Immediate Past President and Vice President of Administration.  She is a Texas Master Naturalist (2014)\, a member of the Native Prairie Association of Texas\, Sierra Club and other conservation organizations. \n\n\n\nShe helped establish several Monarch Waystations in Tarrant County and has presented with other NPSOT speakers in the National Wildlife Federation’s Monarch Steward Program. She loves to talk about native plants and how the Society is making a difference.   Kim holds a BS in Biology with minors in Chemistry and Education from the University of North Texas\, and an MS in Science Education from Texas Woman’s University. SUMMARY:Lessons Learned Running a Native Plant Nursery\, Fredericksburg chapter - Feb 24
DESCRIPTION:“There are a whole host of positive aspects about a native plant business. I want to share the amazing and unexpected things I have leaned.” Dr David Winningham said. \n\n\n\n\nDr. David Winningham\, our February speaker for the Fredericksburgs chapter of NPSOT\, may have a PhD in physics but his love is the “hobby that got out of hand” – the nursery known as the Natives of Texas in the hill country between Kerrville and Medina. \n\n\n\nNurseries didn’t offer native plants in the early 1990s when the Winninghams began searching for those plants that thrive and support the ecology of the Texas Hill Country. As they explored western Texas from San Antonio as far as Big Bend\, they began collecting seeds and cuttings\, focusing on some for the madrone trees that have made the nursery famous.
