SUMMARY:Native Swagger: Turning Heads with Texas Native Plants – Williamson County Chapter Meeting\, May 14
DESCRIPTION:Join NPSOT-Williamson County on Thursday\, May 14\, 2026\, when our featured topic will be “Native Swagger: Turning Heads with Texas Native Plants” with Andrea DeLong-Amaya. Free and open to the public. The meeting begins at 7:00 PM.  The guest presentation begins after a short business meeting. \n\n\n\nPlease note => This month’s guest presentation will NOT be recorded for YouTube. \n\n\n\nAbout our topic: Native plants are ecological powerhouses while representing our botanical heritage. But too often\, they’re dismissed as messy or weedy. It’s time to change the narrative! In this talk\, we’ll explore how to use native plants to create gardens that are true people-pleasers. From wild to formal designs\, lawns to containers\, sun to shade\, wildlife gardens to water gardens\, even edible gardens — you’ll see how natives provide habitat while they also serve as the anchor for stunning landscapes. Whether you’re already a native-plant champion or just native-curious\, you’ll come away with ideas to elevate your garden and give native plants the starring role they deserve. \n\n\n\nBONUS BOOK SIGNING! Bring your copy of Andrea’s book The Texas Native Plant Primer for Andrea to sign! If you don’t have it yet\, be sure to purchase the primer before the meeting. Copies will NOT be available for sale at the meeting. Options for purchasing include the NPSOT Bookstore\, or Timber Press. \n\n\n\nAbout our speaker:Andrea DeLong-Amaya (ahn-DRAY-ah di-LONG ah-MY-ah)Horticulture Educator\, Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center \n\n\n\nFor over three decades\, Andrea DeLong-Amaya has been living her life’s mission to honor the natural world through presenting and teaching classes about the horticulture\, ecology\, and importance of native plants in planned landscapes. \n\n\n\nOver the prior 21 years\, she served as the Wildflower Center’s Director of Horticulture\, overseeing the nine acres of Texas native plant gardens\, and nursery programs. She’s been a staff member since 1998 and has over 30 years of experience with Texas native plants in horticulture\, ecology and garden design. Recently\, she has taken on a new role at the Wildflower Center focusing more on teaching and advancing interpretation in the gardens. \n\n\n\nAndrea has contributed numerous gardening articles to publications such as Taunton’s Fine Gardening\, Rodale’s Organic Gardening\, American Public Gardens Association’s Public Garden\, Neil Sperry’s Gardens and e-Gardens\, Texas Gardener and Wildflower (the Center’s member magazine). Her regionally best-selling book\, the Texas Native Plant Primer (Timber Press)\, was released in March of 2025. \n\n\n\nAndrea has appeared numerous times on Central Texas Gardener\, PBS’s long-running television program\, and was a two-time guest on WNYC’s Science Friday. Jennifer Jewell featured Andrea’s work in her 2020 book\, “The Earth in Her Hands: 75 Extraordinary Women Working in the World of Plants\,” and interviewed DeLong-Amaya on the podcast Cultivating Place. \n\n\n\nThe Scott Arboretum of Swarthmore College honored Andrea with the prestigious 2025 Scott Garden & Horticulture Award in March 2025. And in the fall of 2025\, the Native Plant Society of Texas recognized her for the Texas Native Plant Primer with the Correll Memorial Award. \n\n\n\n==> This month’s in-person location is the Georgetown Public Library\, 2nd floor\, 402 West 8th St\, Georgetown\, TX 78626. SUMMARY:San Antonio Chapter Meeting May 2026
DESCRIPTION:Arrive at 6:30pm to share or find native plants at the Plants x Donation table. \n\n\n\nThis will be a “hybrid” meeting\, attend in-person or online. \n\n\n\n\nIn person: The Gathering Center at the Urban Ecology Center at Phil Hardberger Park\, 8400 NW Military Hwy\n\n\n\nOnline: Please register in advance to attend via Zoom.\n\n\n\n\nPresentation by Elizabeth McGreevy\, Founder and Program Director of Project BedrockMountain Cedars: Junipers that Benefit Texas Karst Country\n\n\n\nFor more than 100 years\, we’ve fought the woody brush spreading across the limestone regions of Texas called karst country. Much of this woody cover consists of native juniper trees\, commonly called mountain cedars. Instead of causing harm\, we now know mountain cedars act as ecosystem engineers to improve and sustain Texas karst country function. Come learn about these benefits and what we can do to use mountain cedars as another nature-based solution to help enhance soil health\, groundwaters\, productivity\, property values\, and resilience. \n\n\n\nIf you are attending in person\, there is no need to register. However\, if you are attending via Zoom\, please register here before the meeting begins as late registration and entry will not be allowed. After registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. \n\n\n\nNote: The Zoom recording will be available within days after the meeting on our  YouTube channel.

SUMMARY:June Meeting - Medicinal Plants\, Cross Timbers Chapter Meeting (Weatherford) - Tuesday 6/23/2026
DESCRIPTION:DATE: Tuesday\, June 23rd\, 2026 \n\n\n\nTIME: 6 pm \n\n\n\nLOCATION: \n\n\n\n213 Raymond George Way\, Weatherford\, TX 76086\, United States \n\n\n\nSPEAKER: Ricky Linex \n\n\n\nMedicinal Applications of Native Plants by Native Americans: \n\n\n\nPresentation showcases 45 native Texas forbs\, shrubs and trees that were used medicinally by many tribes across Texas and the southern US. The treatment method and the illness or disease treated will be discussed for each plant. Resources will be shown that can be used to research plants you are interested in to see what tribes might have used the plants. The Native Americans utilized many native plants for treatment of various illnesses for thousands of years\, much of this knowledge was set aside when synthetic medicines became widely available. \n\n\n\nAbout Ricky: \n\n\n\nRicky Linex retired in 2021 as a wildlife biologist for the Natural Resources Conservation Service and now works as a range and wildlife consultant. With NRCS\, Linex worked 52 counties in north central Texas covering the Rolling Plains\, Cross Timbers\, Blackland Prairie\, and Post Oak Savannah vegetational regions. He worked 38.5 years with NRCS in Goldthwaite\, Snyder\, Abilene\, and Weatherford. He is the author of Range Plants of North Central Texas\, A Land Users Guide to Their Identification\, Value and Management\, a plant identification book for Texas. Range Plants was recognized in 2015 as an outstanding publication by the Texas Chapter – The Wildlife Society\, the Native Plant Society of Texas\, and the Texas Section – Society for Range Management. \n\n\n\nSee less \n\n\n\nMeeting Details: \n\n\n\n6:00pm Chapter Business Meeting \n\n\n\n6:30pm Monthly Feature Presentation \n\n\n\nThis educational event is open to the public. \n\n\n\nLocation: Mount Pleasant Historical School\, 213 Raymond George Way\, Weatherford\, Texas. \n\n\n\n\n6:00 p.m. Chapter Business Meeting and Update on Native Plant Sale\n\n\n\n6:30 p.m. Bat Presentation
