He has been involved with aquatic plant biology\, conservation and restoration since graduate school at Texas State University where he mapped and studied the aquatic plants of the San Marcos and Comal springs. He has worked as a wildlife biologist for 35 years\, 23 years with TPWD. Rufus is one of the founders of the Texas Master Naturalist program and in recognition for this accomplishment was a corecipient of the Wildlife Management Institute’s award for Innovation. \n\n\n\nJan is a non-fiction writer and environmental educator. She worked for 19 years as the director of education and citizen science at the Cibolo Nature Center and wrote weekly nature columns for the local newspapers. She also was a secondary science teacher for 15 years. \n\n\n\nRufus and Jan are co-authors of the new edition of Land Stewardship for Birds: A Guide for Central Texas\, published by Texas A&M Press. Photo courtesy of Eric Ruckstuhl.\n\n\n\nIf you are not aware (but we hope you are)\, an invasive species is defined as a non-native species to the ecosystem whose introduction causes or is likely to cause economic or environmental harm or harm to human health. Our speaker this month\, Eric Ruckstuhl\, has been removing invasive\, exotic plants throughout Texas for more than 25 years. Join us to learn about his work removing invasive species in Texas and witness the unveiling of his results mapping the lost palms of Texas\, Sabal mexicana. \n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker – Eric Ruckstuhl \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEric Ruckstuhl is a native Houstonian who has lived in Cypress with his wife and two sons for 27 years. His company\, EBR Enterprises\, has been involved in habitat restoration for 30 years\, and invasive plant removal for over 25 years. He is a fluvial geomorphologist and a native plant and wetland specialist. (Since this newsletter editor had to look up fluvial geomorphology\, I’ll share that it is the study of the physical processes that shape and maintain river and stream form\, recognizing that an in-depth understanding of a river’s history and site specific conditions are critical to successful management and restoration. Now we know.) Eric is also a licensed Herbicide Applicator\, with Aquatic and Land Management certifications. \n\n\n\n\n\nOur monthly chapter meetings are held on every 3rd Thursday\, January – November. He has also worked with Crocodilians in India at the Madras Crocodile Bank Trust and Center for Herpetology. Scott recently left the zoology field so he could be closer to his family in Texas and continues to work on connecting people with nature and promoting conservation initiatives. \n\n\n\nTopic: Coexistence – Native Plants\, Reptiles\, Amphibians\, and People.

DESCRIPTION:Our chapter’s annual “Show and Tell” meeting will be on Tuesday September 3. Members and other attendees are encouraged to show pictures and tell about their favorite native Texas plants. Everyone is invited to participate and there is no minimum length\, but we request presentations to be limited to 10 minutes. The only requirement is that you show and discuss native Texas plants. \n\n\n\nThe meeting will be a hybrid\, with attendance options either in-person at the Heard Museum’s Laughlin Hall or virtually via Zoom. Enter Laughlin Hall from the southern entrance to the museum. Presenters can be in person or remote. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTo participate\, all you need to do is send an email to timcast@gmail.com with a PowerPoint\, Google Slides\, or PDF that you will be showing. Please convert presentations in Apple’s Keynote software to one of these formats. Also\, please do not send photos – convert them into a PDF format using Microsoft’s or Apple’s “Print to PDF” function. Native grasses not only add structural interest but also create valuable wildlife habitats. Cheryl Barajas will share insights on how to seamlessly incorporate these grasses into your garden. Bev Morrison will cover the selection and approaches to groundcovers\, many of which can lead to minimal or even turf-free lawns. But be cautious—some ground covers can spread quickly! Using native grasses and groundcovers in your garden is easier and more beautiful than you might expect. \n\n\n\nAbout the Speakers\n\n\n\nCheryl Barajas is a dedicated native plant enthusiast\, currently serving as the Plant Sale Committee Chair. With her expertise as a Master Gardener since 2012 and a Master Naturalist since 2019\, Cheryl’s passion for the environment and over five years of active membership in the Native Plant Society make her a valued advocate for sustainable gardening and native plant conservation. \n\n\n\nBev Morrison has recently developed an interest in plants\, despite not having a gardening background. She is a Master Naturalist\, teaches fourth graders through the Longhorn Project\, and volunteers at various nature and conservation sites. Although she enjoys birding\, her primary interests are prairies and trees. This prairie was the “crown jewel” of our Central Texas prairies\, and you’ll hear the dramatic (but ultimately futile) account of the efforts to protect it. We’ll also explore some of the special MoKan Prairie plants and our efforts to save those plant genetics through seed collecting and plant salvage. \n\n\n\nAbout our speaker: Ashley Landry is a Texas Master Naturalist\, a member of the Native Plant Society of Texas\, and the founder of the Native Plant Rescue Project. She has been featured in Wildflower magazine\, The Austin Chronicle\, Central Texas Gardener and the Liberty Hill Independent. Anyone can play a role in safeguarding these vital creatures for future generations. Amber will equip you with the knowledge and tools to attract and support native birds wherever you live\, work\, and play\, ensuring that their songs and presence remain a cherished part of our world for years to come. \n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker\n\n\n\nAmber Leung is the Nature Programs Manager for Houston Audubon. She teaches about birds and the rest of the natural world at the Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary in Houston. Her love for the natural world was nurtured from an early age through camping and hiking adventures with her family in Austin. Her passion for birding took flight during a Coastal Ornithology course while pursuing a BS in Marine Sciences at Texas A&M University in Galveston. In 2015\, Amber became a certified Texas Master Naturalist and went on to serve two terms as president of the Coastal Prairie Chapter. She is deeply committed to promoting the importance of all aspects of a healthy ecosystem\, particularly those that are often overlooked. In her free time\, Amber enjoys cultivating her own native plant garden\, creating wildlife-inspired art\, and immersing herself in nature\, where she delights in observing birds and reptiles.  \n\n\n\n\n\nOur monthly chapter meetings are held on every 3rd Thursday\, January – November.
