SUMMARY:Understanding Climate Change and its impact on Ecosystems
DESCRIPTION:Location: The Urban Ecology Center at Phil Hardberger Park\, 8400 NW Military Hwy\, San Antonio\, TX 78231 \n\n\n\nOur event’s purposes include understanding the science behind climate change\, the global effects of climate change\, and the long-term impacts of this phenomenon on specific Texas ecosystems. The audience will be encouraged to ask questions and provide their observations relevant to the topic. \n\n\n\nOur presenter\, Gary Poole\, is a former middle school math and science teacher\, engineer\, and electronics technician. He is as well a former Texas caver\, beekeeper\, and is currently a Master Naturalist with Alamo Area Master Naturalists\, in which organization he has served in several different capacities including as President. \n\n\n\nPlease arrive at the UEC small CR by 8:45 am SHARP to register so we can start right at 9:00 am. \n\n\n\nMinors only when accompanied by an adult parent/guardian. Dogs not appropriate because of the indoor presentation. DIFFICULTY: Easy\, definitely suitable for families. SUMMARY:Trees of Phil Hardberger Park
DESCRIPTION:Location: Phil Hardberger Park\, 8400 NW Military Hwy\, San Antonio\, TX 78231 \n\n\n\nSPECIAL NOTE: Our presenter has so much to share we are “allowing” 2.5 hours for the full walk\, but participants are free to leave earlier. \n\n\n\nThe event’s purpose is to learn about the many special understory and canopy trees in our area. This walk will be led by Michael Nentwich\, president and founder of Bexar Branches Alliance. Michael has nearly 20 years of experience in community forestry management and program development. He was San Antonio’s first City Forester and later served as City Forester and Bureau Manager of Parks and Urban Forestry with the City of Norfolk. \n\n\n\nHe earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science and a Master’s Degree in Forestry from Stephen F. Austin University. He has extensive knowledge and a deep and abiding interest in trees as well as being a great communicator. You will be introduced to the common tree species found in the park\, and probably will get to see and learn about Eve’s Necklace\, Texas Kidneywood\, and Little-leaf Mulbery among many other fascinating species. \n\n\n\nPlease arrive about 7:45 am SHARP so we can register everyone and be ready for an 8:00 am start. You will walk an about 1.5 mile route starting and ending at the Urban Ecology Center. There will be brief explanations at the start and along the way with ample time for participant questions. \n\n\n\nMinors only when accompanied by an adult parent/guardian. Dogs allowed if leashed and socialized. DIFFICULTY: Easy\, definitely suitable for families. Flat terrain\, slow-paced. \n\n\n\nThe trail is a natural surface so be sure to wear sturdy shoes and\, dependent on the weather\, bring water\, sun protection\, and dress appropriately for the day and season. Suggested $3 individual or $5 family donations to the PHP Conservancy to support enhancements to the park. \n\n\n\nThis event’s general sponsors are the Phil Hardberger Park Conservancy\, the San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department’s Natural Areas Office\, the Alamo Area Master Naturalists\, and the Alamo Group of the Sierra Club. DESCRIPTION:Location: Phil Hardberger Park\, 8400 NW Military Hwy\, San Antonio\, TX 78231 \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nOur walks’s purpose is to identify and appreciate our area wildflowers in the context of also appreciating the beauty of our natural areas and learning about where and when our wildflowers grow and their relationship to insects. \n\n\n\nJerry Morrisey\, a long-time plant identifier\, propagator\, and lover as well as a Texas Master Naturalist\, from the Native Plant Society of Texas’s San Antonio chapter will lead us along the trails of PHP and through the Demonstration Garden identifying and discussing the plethora of wildflowers enjoying our Texas spring. Jerry will specifically discuss where native wildflowers will be present in the local ecology and their interactions with pollinators. Come learn with our accomplished local expert. \n\n\n\nPlease arrive by 7:50 am to sign up so we can begin promptly at 8:00 am. We will walk along several of the trails close to the UEC where Jerry will have scouted out the most wildflowers. There will be brief explanations at the start and along the way with ample time for participant questions. \n\n\n\nMinors only when accompanied by an adult parent/guardian. Dogs allowed if leashed and socialized. DIFFICULTY: Easy\, definitely suitable for families. Flat terrain\, slow-paced. The walk will focus on plantings around the Urban Ecology Center and the Alamo Area Master Naturalist Demonstration Garden and various naturally occurring plants in the park. \n\n\n\nThis event is presented by the San Antonio Chapter – Native Plant Society of Texas (NPSOT-SA) chapter. It will be led by Joan Miller\, a former president of NPSOT-SA and Drake White of The Nectar Bar\, both active plant propagators\, identifiers of native plants\, and teachers/event leaders of all things related to native plants. \n\n\n\nJoan and Drake also discuss where in your landscape to use the plant\, its water requirements\, and tips for caring for the plant\, especially when and how much to cut back. They also point out how the plants function in the ecosystem especially which butterflies utilize the plants. Bring your questions and re-imagine your yard by incorporating new native plants ! \n\n\n\nPlease arrive about 7:45 am to sign up for a 8:00 am departure. We will walk around the UEC\, along several paths from the UEC\, and finish in the Demonstration Garden. Our presenter\, Josie Gonzales\, is a Certified Interpretive Guide and Texas Master Naturalist. She’ll discuss Ethnobotany — how people of a particular culture and region make use of native plants. Plants sustain people not only as food and as medicine\, but provide materials\, dyes\, tannins\, wax\, latex\, soap\, resin and oil. \n\n\n\nThere will be a brief overview of ethnobotanical concepts prior to the walk. On the walk itself a wide variety of forbs\, shrubs\, and trees will be discussed from the standpoint of medicinal\, utilitarian\, and nutritional uses. Participants will have a chance to look at and ask questions about these plants. \n\n\n\nPlease arrive BEFORE 8;00 am to sign up for an 8:00 am start. \n\n\n\nMinors must be accompanied by an adult parent/guardian. This presentation is only appropriate for dogs who are leashed and socialized. DIFFICULTY: Easy–it is definitely suitable for families\, with flat terrain\, and a slow pace. Bring water and a hat as well as use a heavy amount of repellent and sunscreen. We may be walking in the sun\, on grassy areas prone to chiggers! \n\n\n\nThe purposes of our event include appreciating the beauty of our natural area\, observing how nature changes through the seasons\, and learning about our native and invasive grasses. \n\n\n\nOur presenter is Cleve Powell\, NPSOT-SA member\, a self-described plant nerd heavy into collecting\, identifying\, and propagating natives. With an MS from TCU in Environmental Science\, his expertise in grass identification is only exceeded by his willingness to share knowledge. This will give you a chance to see more grass and more fully-developed grasses\, especially grass inflorescences\, than is possible earlier in the year as well as see the progress expanding our savanna area. \n\n\n\nPlease arrive by 7:45 am to sign up for an 8:00 am start. The event begins with a talk in the small classroom covering What is a grass\, grass and spikelet structure\, and grass terminology. There will be pictures of the common grasses seen on the savanna\, with close ups of the structural characteristics that help ID the grasses. After the talk we will walk in the savanna restoration area and some grassy areas of adjoining trails. There will be brief explanations of grass species encountered along the way with ample time for participant questions. \n\n\n\nMinors only when accompanied by an adult parent/guardian. SUMMARY:Wildlife of Phil Hardberger Park
DESCRIPTION:Location: The Urban Ecology Center at Phil Hardberger Park\, 8400 NW Military Hwy\, San Antonio\, TX 78231 \n\n\n\nThe focus of this month’s event is wildlife. Our presenter\, Christine Westerman\, is the lead project manager in the local office of a national environmental consulting firm. She was involved in the studies leading to the park’s Master Plan. Christine will highlight the common park wildlife\, show wildlife photos mostly taken at night and often on the Land Bridge. She will also have the park’s collection of pelts and skulls of most park wildlife to pass around . After her talk in the small classroom we head out on nearby trails for a nature walk looking for “signs” of wildlife. \n\n\n\nPlease arrive by 8:50 am SHARP at the small classroom of the UEC to sign up for an 9:00 am start. First\, enjoy the heavily illustrated introductory talk focusing on the park’s wildlife\, supplemented by the parks collection of pelts and skulls\, and then find signs of wildlife along the nearby trails. Participants will be encouraged to observe nature and ask about what they see. \n\n\n\nMinors must be accompanied by an adult parent/guardian. This presentation is not appropriate for dogs. It will cover the constituents and type of soils. Emphasis will be placed on all the organisms present in soils. Finally\, how soil and soil composition\, through the symbiotic relationship between the soil microfauna and plants\, affects plant communities will be highlighted.Our presenter is Gary Poole\, an accomplished former Middle School math/science teacher\, an electronics technician\, bee keeper\, and caver. Gary’s graduate work in Geology left him with an abiding interest in rocks and their role in nature. Gary is a past president of our AAMN chapter.With a 1.5 hour timeframe there will be plenty of time for questions related to rocks and soils and their effect on plant communities.Please arrive to register for the event at least ten minutes before the 9:00 am start. Minors only when accompanied by an adult parent/guardian. Dogs not appropriate because it is an indoor presentation.
