DESCRIPTION:6:15 Doors Open – UHCL Bayou Building\, Forest Room (1430)6:40 Zoom Opens6:45 Business Meeting7:00 Guest Speaker \n\n\n\nJoin us for an evening of delicious pizza\, exciting door prizes\, and the chance to connect with others while learning something new! Bring your own beverage. \n\n\n\nAs part of its mission to save the Attwater’s Prairie-Chicken from extinction\, APCNWR protects over 9\,000 contiguous acres of Upper Coastal Prairie\, second only to the core area of the Coastal Prairie Conservancy.  Some of the best-quality prairie is accessible daily to the public\, with 2.3 miles of hiking trails and a 3.4-mile auto loop\, all within 2 hours of the Houston metropolitan region and about 20 minutes from the Sealy exit on I-10. APCNWR possesses a distinctive native flora adapted to dry\, sandy soils\, plus a variety of wetland species. A recently updated phenological plant list\, based on iNaturalist observations and herbarium records\, shows nearly 400 verified (research grade or herbarium) species of native forbs and vines and around 100 species of native grasses\, sedges\, and rushes. This presentation will feature about 40 species of native wildflowers characteristic of APCNWR\, all seen within the last 5 years in the publicly accessible portion of the refuge. \n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker\n\n\n\nCharles Winker is a retired geologist residing on the Fayette Prairie near Brenham with his wife Susie and their blue heeler Elsa. A Chicago native\, he has lived in Texas for 43 years\, plus five years each in Georgia and Arizona. Upon retirement in 2016 he became interested in prairie conservation and field botany\, joined Texas Master Naturalists and the Native Prairie Association of Texas\, embraced iNaturalist\, and began volunteering at the Coastal Prairie Conservancy\, Winedale Historical Complex\, and APCNWR. He is particularly interested in native Texas grasses\, which he cultivates on their property. \n\n\n\nIn-person – Parking Pass Required\n\n\n\nClear Lake Chapter Members: New passes need starting September 2025. If you have a pass\, don’t forget it – you will not get another one if you picked one up previously. Clear photos will showcase the features to look for in making positive identification. Grass ID may seem difficult but will be made easier by the photos and a handout on the characteristics that will guide you in making identification. Never again fear the grasses as you walk across the prairies and woods of Central Texas. \n\n\n\nAbout our speaker: Ricky Linex is a wildlife biologist having retired from the Natural Resources Conservation Service where he worked 38.5 years. Over the previous 18 years Ricky served 52 counties in north-central Texas. Ricky is the author of Range Plants of North Central Texas: A Land User’s Guide to their Identification\, Value and Management. His assistance to landowners and managers involves mutual education on how to better manage rangelands for sustainable use by livestock and wildlife. Knowing the plants and how to manage them is critical for success as a land steward. Our rich plant diversity is filled with wonderful\, native seasoning and spice plants that will satisfy even the most demanding palate. Join internationally recognized foraging instructor and author Dr. Mark Vorderbruggen aka “Merriwether” for a dive into his favorite wild herbs for jazzing up his meals and soon yours! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker \n\n\n\nDr. Vorderbruggen is a preacher of cavemanosity\, forever trying to help people’s health by teaching them what their bodies need based on their ancient evolution. To do this\, he first lures you in with the edible and medicinal plants that still surround us\, followed by opening your eyes to nature\, humans\, and why they co-evolved to need each other. This has led to books\, magazine articles\, hundreds of interviews and nearly 1000 speaking engagements over the last 20 years. When not doing that\, he still creates nature-based products for companies ranging from snack foods to painting chemicals. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur monthly chapter meetings are held on every 3rd Thursday\, January – November. He has been part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS)\, throughout west Texas for 15 years\, serving in Gillespie Country for the last 7 years. \n\n\n\n\n\n“We’re working hard at NCRS to educate the public on how to be part of the conservation solution\,” said Day. “I’m looking forward to sharing tips on how homeowners and landowners can control invasive species and use our soil information to keep our water clean and abundant\, our soils healthy\, and have resilient landscapes and thriving agricultural communities.” \n\n\n\n“Mr. Day will share potential control methods for a variety of invasive non-native plants and demonstrate how to use the NRCS’ Web Soil Survey to map soils and obtain data that is useful to home and landowners.” JonathanWatt\, Fredericksburg chapter president\, said\, “We can all do our part to voluntarily conserve our resources\, and he’ll share some great tips about how to do that.”
