SUMMARY:Sam Kieschnick\, TPWD\, Flying Bird Food – Learning about Moths! North Central Chapter Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Insects are a crucial part of the diet of most birds at some time in their lives. In this program\, learn about one of the most important groups of insects for birds. Although not quite as famed as their day-flying cousins\, moths are tremendously diverse and have some magnificent patterns.  In the DFW area\, we have documented over 1200 species of moths. Learn ways you can manage your habitat to encourage moth diversity and find out some ways that you can document and identify the various species that you might see. \n\n\n\nSam Kieschnick is an urban wildlife biologist with TPWD serving the east side of the DFW metroplex.  He previously worked as a nature educator with the City of Mansfield at Oliver Nature Park\, as a naturalist at the Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge\, as a science interpreter with the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History\, as a botanist with Botanical Research Institute of Texas\, and as an instructor at Weatherford College.  He has a master’s degree from Tarleton State University studying the genetics of pocket gophers.  As an urban wildlife biologist\, Sam’s focus will be on three a’s: awareness\, appreciation\, and action.   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n6:30 Doors Open\, Socializing and Snacks7:00 Chapter Meeting and AnnouncementsThe presentation will follow our brief business meeting. \n\n\n\nLOCATIONFort Worth Botanic GardenRose Room3220 Botanic Garden Blvd\, Fort Worth\, Texas 76107 \n\n\n\nVIRTUAL ZOOM REGISTRATION This meeting is hybrid and will be held in person and on Zoom.  You can register in advance to receive the Zoom meeting link by clicking the GREEN BUTTON found at the top of the Calendar page on our website. DESCRIPTION:Join NPSOT-Williamson County on Thursday\, June 11\, 2026\, when our featured topic will be “Party in the Prickly Pear” with Becky Roe. Free and open to the public. The meeting begins at 7:00 PM.  The guest presentation begins after a short business meeting. \n\n\n\nAbout our topic: Prickly pear occurs throughout the state of Texas; it’s even our state plant. Have you ever really thought about this cactus? We will take a look at this family of native plants. First\, a little about cacti in general and what makes prickly pear different. What is its place in nature? How have humans used it in the past and today? This will be a fun look at a plant we see everyday. \n\n\n\nAbout our speaker: Becky Roe is a lifelong nature lover; she found her niche when she became a Master Naturalist in 2022 with the Good Water chapter. As a Master Naturalist\, her interest in plants has intensified\, especially native plants\, which led to her joining the Native Plant Society in 2023. She is a member of the Tonkawa Chapter and is an associate member of the Williamson County Chapter. Becky also volunteers at Mother Neff State Park as often as possible\, helping with school field trip days and leading guided plant hikes. She enjoys sharing with others how plants interact with all the other parts of nature\, and with how people have historically used those plants. \n\n\n\n==> This month’s in-person location is the Georgetown Public Library\, 2nd floor\, 402 West 8th St\, Georgetown\, TX 78626.
