SUMMARY:The Not-Moths of Moth Night - Hybrid Clear Lake Chapter Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for our chapter meeting in person or online! \n\n\n\n6:15 Doors Opens – UHCL Bayou Building\, Room 25246:40 Zoom Opens6:45 Business Meeting6:55 Plant of the Month7:00 Guest Speaker8:00 Mothing at UHCL \n\n\n\nRich Sommer will discuss “mothing” and some of the interesting species he has encountered. While Rich loves a hike hunting for insects\, an easy way to find specimens is using a UV light to attract them at night. Engaging in regular “moth nights” at locations such as Exploration Green and Deer Park Prairie\, Rich actively introduces others to the world of mothing at venues like Buffalo Bayou and Memorial Park. Interested in boosting your observation and species count for the City Nature Challenge? Consider mothing in your own backyard\, as these “moth nights” attract a diverse array of night-flying insects. He will also talk about the upcoming City Nature Challenge\, an event he eagerly anticipates each year. Notably\, he was the Houston region’s top observer the last two years. Furthermore\, he will highlight the role of iNaturalist\, an integral tool in his mothing pursuits. \n\n\n\nFollowing the meeting\, attendees are encouraged to participate in a hands-on mothing experience. Rich and his team will have moth stations set up with UV lights and will provide assistance with viewing and identifying the specimens for up to an hour after the meeting. \n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker\n\n\n\nRich Sommer began volunteering at Exploration Green nearly 10 years ago\, with little knowledge about native plants. Through his involvement with Exploration Green\, NPSOT\, the Texas Master Naturalist program\, and iNaturalist\, he gained a deep understanding of the importance of native plants to the ecosystem. He joined NPSOT around 2016\, the Exploration Green Board of Directors in 2018\, and the Gulf Coast TMN chapter in spring 2021. Over time\, he started noticing the insects in his flower and bird photographs. As his knowledge expanded\, he became fascinated by their life cycles and their complex relationships with plants\, mammals\, and other insects. Rich finds parasitic wasps and insect galls particularly intriguing. \n\n\n\nIn-person – Parking Pass Required\n\n\n\nParking passes required. If you have a pass\, don’t forget it – you will not get another one if you picked one up previously. DO NOT park in faculty/staff parking (tickets will be issued). Martha Richeson will be passing out parking passes Monday evening. Watch for her bright blinking vest on the sidewalk between the Bayou Building and the pay station near the Recreation Center. If you miss out on the NPSOT parking passes\, you will need to buy a parking pass from the pay station. \n\n\n\nMap and Directions – The meeting will be held in Room 2524 of the Bayou Building at UHCL. \n\n\n\nUniversity of Houston-Clear Lake2700 Bay Area Blvd.Houston\, TX 77058 \n\n\n\nOnline – Zoom\n\n\n\nRegister in advance for this meeting. After registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThis is a FREE EVENT. Meetings are open to members and non-members. SUMMARY:NPAT Zoom Series – Climate\, Water\, Science and Society in 21st Century Texas - A Historical Perspective - April 11
DESCRIPTION:From our partners at the Native Prairies Association of Texas (NPAT). How will climate change impact Texas and the native prairie and savanna ecosystems? How do we plan restorations to be sustainable in 2050? Do we need to change our land management practices? The NPAT Fayette Prairie Chapter will host a year-long series of presentations to explore climate change and the implications for the Fayette Prairie ecosystem. Beginning with the climate models\, this series will examine the forecasts within a historical context\, then focus upon water resources\, management practices\, projected changes in tallgrass prairies and soil microbial structure\, and end with restoration paradigms in a changing world. \n\n\n\nThis session will be presented by Jay Banner\, Dept. of Earth & Planetary Sciences\, University of Texas – Austin.

SUMMARY:“Get Real” Garden Design with Native Plants
DESCRIPTION:Fredericksburg Chapter of Native Plant Society of Texas Speaker Paula Stone on April 23 \n\n\n\n Find out how to make your landscape maintenance easier by choosing the right layout\, the right style and the best plants for your area at the next meeting of the Native Plant Society of Texas (NPSOT)\, Fredericksburg Chapter on April 23 from 6:30-8 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Halle. \n\n\n\nPaula Stone\, Vice President of the Fredericksburg Chapter of the NPSOT\, will share her extensive knowledge about landscape design using native Texas plants. \n\n\n\n“I’ll show you practical ways to build gardens that will enhance your property and be less work as time goes by\,” noted Stone. “I once heard someone say that\, ‘The gardening should get easier as the gardener gets older.’” \n\n\n\n“Paula is a great teacher when it comes to learning how to minimize weeding and watering while maximizing entertainment and enjoyment\,” said Deborah Simmons\, president of the Fredericksburg chapter of NPSOT. “She’ll explore ways to make that happen in our Hill Country gardens.” \n\n\n\nOver the last 15 years\, Stone has tried various plants and gardening techniques to deal with the caliche soil\, lack of rainfall\, excessive heat\, and occasional ice storm that are common to Gillespie County.  Her presentation will take that all into account as she describes what’s needed in an easy-to-maintain native landscape.  Stone hopes that people new to gardening in the Hill Country will benefit from the many tips she will be sharing.   \n\n\n\nStone is a three-term past president of the NPSOT Fredericksburg Chapter\, and has been gardening in Fredericksburg since purchasing her property in 2009.  Stone bought and restored a historic stone home on the edge of Fredericksburg and took the property from being so derelict that the realtor wouldn’t go inside to being on the 2012 Historic Home Tour.  The 10 acres surrounding the house were in equally horrific condition\, having been an exotic game farm/puppy mill that had “every conceivable weed that will grow in the hill country” says Stone. She recently built a dome home on the property and is designing the landscape that will surround it. \n\n\n\nThe chapter holds its monthly meetings on the 4th Tuesday of the month at St. Joseph’s Halle (212 W. San Antonio St.\, Fredericksburg). There is a social time at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting starts at 7 p.m. The public is invited to attend in person and via online streaming (www.youtube.com/@fredericksburgtexasnativeg4884). More information is online at Facebook (@fbgtxnpsot)\, Instagram @npsot_fredericksburg_chapter\, and https://npsot.org/chapters/fredericksburg/. Meetings are open to the public.

SUMMARY:Container Gardening with Keystone Plants presented by Krista De Cooke\, Homegrown National Park - May 21
DESCRIPTION:In this presentation\, Krista De Cooke will explore container gardening as a potent strategy to combat biodiversity loss. Attendees will learn how to cultivate keystone plants tailored to their growing conditions and suitable for small spaces\, using ecoregions as a guide for plant selection. Krista will showcase plant species that will be suitable for level II ecoregions across the United States and Canada\, highlighting their potential to support native biodiversity and serve as crucial refueling stops for pollinators. She will also emphasize the concept of Keystone Plants\, species that form the backbone of local ecosystems by providing essential insect food. By incorporating these keystone plants\, attendees will be able to actively contribute to the restoration of native biodiversity and address the urgent issue of ecosystem collapse. Joining this presentation will allow participants to make a meaningful impact on biodiversity regeneration\, one container at a time. \n\n\n\nThis presentation is part of the Monarch Conservation Webinar Series by Monarch Joint Venture.

SUMMARY:Green Jobs: Exploring STEM Natural Resource Careers
DESCRIPTION:Webinar with Ted Stevens\, Education Director\, Texas Forestry Association \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLearn how to use Project Learning Tree’s new Green Jobs guide that is TEKS-aligned and STEM correlated to inspire your students to pursue a future career working outdoors in a natural resource forestry related career. The guide contains four fun hands-on activities to explore this topic with your middle school and high school students. \n\n\n\nParticipants will learn how to use the four activities that are contained within the new Green Jobs curriculum guide to inspire their middle school / high school students to explore STEM and natural resource careers. “Green” jobs — defined by the Bureau of Labor Statistics as jobs that produce goods or services that benefit the environment or conserve natural resources\, or jobs that use more environmentally friendly processes or fewer natural resources — have outpaced jobs in other categories by almost 250 percent over the last decade. According to the International Labour Organization\, there were 9.8 million “green” jobs in 2017 and by 2030\, there will be an additional 15-60 million new green jobs. Green jobs are not just in the renewable energy\, manufacturing\, or technology sectors. \n\n\n\nSome of the greenest jobs involve forests which Green Jobs: Exploring Forest Careers introduces high schoolers to the exciting array of career options in this field. These activities will be demonstrated in the webinar and participants will receive a free sample of one of the activities as a PDF download file. An overview of other Project Learning Tree’s award winning environmental education curriculum guides will also be presented. \n\n\n\nZoom link to be sent to registrants the day of the event

SUMMARY:Rainscaping: The Next Generation of Water-Wise Landscaping - Austin Chapter Meeting June 18
DESCRIPTION:With droughts and floods\, our water challenges need an innovative solution. Rain gardens help solve both problems by maximizing the amount of water that stays on and in your landscape. Rain gardens support lush vegetation to provide habitat for butterflies and birds. Create your own backyard oasis by learning how to harvest the rain in this presentation \n\n\n\nShannon founded Ecosystem Regeneration Artisans (ERA) Landscaping in 2017 to unite talented land stewards on projects that realize the vision of creating healthy ecological communities. From residential Rainscapes to wildlife management on large-acreage ranches\, Shannon and her team create projects focused on earth care and people care. Their gardens use native plants to provide wildlife habitat for pollinators and birds\, incorporate perennial food crops for human consumption\, and involve mechanisms to harvest rainwater to capture it into the soil before it runs off\, and contributes to flooding. \n\n\n\nThis is a virtual meeting using Zoom. Please click here to register and get the Zoom for this meeting. \n\n\n\nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.
