SUMMARY:Native Grasses and Groundcovers - Hybrid Clear Lake Chapter Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for our chapter meeting in person or online! \n\n\n\n6:15 Doors Opens – UHCL Bayou Building\, Garden Room6:40 Zoom Opens6:45 Business Meeting6:55 Plant of the Month7:00 Guest Speaker \n\n\n\nTexas native grasses and groundcovers can be a great addition to your landscape. Native grasses not only add structural interest but also create valuable wildlife habitats. Cheryl Barajas will share insights on how to seamlessly incorporate these grasses into your garden. Bev Morrison will cover the selection and approaches to groundcovers\, many of which can lead to minimal or even turf-free lawns. But be cautious—some ground covers can spread quickly! Using native grasses and groundcovers in your garden is easier and more beautiful than you might expect. \n\n\n\nAbout the Speakers\n\n\n\nCheryl Barajas is a dedicated native plant enthusiast\, currently serving as the Plant Sale Committee Chair. With her expertise as a Master Gardener since 2012 and a Master Naturalist since 2019\, Cheryl’s passion for the environment and over five years of active membership in the Native Plant Society make her a valued advocate for sustainable gardening and native plant conservation. \n\n\n\nBev Morrison has recently developed an interest in plants\, despite not having a gardening background. She is a Master Naturalist\, teaches fourth graders through the Longhorn Project\, and volunteers at various nature and conservation sites. Although she enjoys birding\, her primary interests are prairies and trees. Bev is eager to share her knowledge about trees through the Native Landscape Certification Program (NLCP) while continuing to learn herself. \n\n\n\nIn-person – Parking Pass Required\n\n\n\nNew YELLOW parking passes are needed. Parking & Transportation will be checking! Patty Steinke will be outside handing out passes. If you have a pass\, don’t forget it – you will not get another one if you picked one up previously. If you need a pass\, arrive early enough to pick one up and place it in your car. DO NOT park in faculty/staff parking (enforced 24/7). \n\n\n\nMap and Directions – The meeting will be held in the Bayou Building’s Garden Room at UHCL. \n\n\n\nUniversity of Houston-Clear Lake2700 Bay Area Blvd.Houston\, TX 77058 \n\n\n\nOnline – Zoom\n\n\n\nRegister in advance for this meeting. SUMMARY:Rediscovering the MoKan Prairie - Williamson County Chapter Meeting\, September 12
DESCRIPTION:Join NPSOT-Williamson County on Thursday\, September 12\, 2024\, when our featured topic will be “Rediscovering the MoKan Prairie” with Ashley Landry.   \n\n\n\nFree and open to the public. The meeting begins at 7:00 PM.  Our guest speaker’s presentation begins after a short business meeting. \n\n\n\nThis month’s guest presentation will NOT be recorded for our YouTube channel. \n\n\n\nAbout our topic: This presentation will tell the story of the forgotten MoKan Prairie of Williamson County. This prairie was the “crown jewel” of our Central Texas prairies\, and you’ll hear the dramatic (but ultimately futile) account of the efforts to protect it. We’ll also explore some of the special MoKan Prairie plants and our efforts to save those plant genetics through seed collecting and plant salvage. \n\n\n\nAbout our speaker: Ashley Landry is a Texas Master Naturalist\, a member of the Native Plant Society of Texas\, and the founder of the Native Plant Rescue Project. She has been featured in Wildflower magazine\, The Austin Chronicle\, Central Texas Gardener and the Liberty Hill Independent. She is an avid iNaturalist user and enjoys spending her free time botanizing. \n\n\n\nNOTE: this month’s in-person location is the Georgetown Parks & Rec Administration Building\, 1101 N College St\, Georgetown\, Texas 78626. \n\n\n\nThe link to register on Zoom is below. \n\n\n\nThe original meeting announcement is here on the Williamson County Chapter’s blog page.

SUMMARY:Tracking Shifts in Food Availability for Monarchs and Other Pollinators - September 24
DESCRIPTION:Monarchs depend on a diverse suite of host plants along their migration path. Knowledge of when and where plants are leafing and flowering\, and how climate change is shifting the timing\, is critical for understanding availability of food resources. In this presentation I will describe how the USA National Phenology Network engages volunteer and professional scientists in collecting data on presence and intensity of leafing and flowering with simple yet scientifically rigorous phenology protocols. I’ll also describe our recent efforts to establish climate drivers to flowering and seed timing to make predictions of how this timing will shift under future climate conditions. \n\n\n\nThis presentation by Erin Posthumus\, USA National Phenology Network is part of the Monarch Conservation Webinar Series by Monarch Joint Venture.

SUMMARY:Chapter Leader Forum: How San Antonio Developed a Native Landscape Services Directory
DESCRIPTION:Description: Join Joan Miller who will tell you about the development of the NLCP Services Directory and Bulletin Board. As we know\, interest in native landscaping is rapidly growing\, creating a need for individuals who are knowledgeable in the field. The Native Landscape Certification Program (NLCP) was developed to fulfill that need. Taking the concept further\, the San Antonio chapter has created a directory of individuals who have completed NLCP classes and are offering their services and expertise to the public. This directory was created as a reference to the public in order to help find individuals who can help them in native landscaping of their yards and businesses and is targeted to those living in the San Antonio area. \n\n\n\nDiscussion topics: Share ideas of how chapters can develop listings of local landscapers who can provide services in native landscaping. \n\n\n\nPresenter: Joan Miller\, San Antonio Chapter and NLCP Chapter Coordinator \n\n\n\nWhen: October 17\, 2024 (Third Thursday) 12 – 1 pm \n\n\n\nZoom Registration Link: \n\n\n\nhttps://npsot-org.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMkf-uurz0sHNW1chmdgZMMfg_GCadxsUzA

DESCRIPTION:This meeting was originally scheduled for July but canceled due to Hurricane Beryl. If you registered in July\, your registration is good for November. \n\n\n\nPlease join us for our chapter meeting in person or online! \n\n\n\n6:15 Doors Opens – UHCL Bayou Building\, Forest Room6:40 Zoom Opens6:45 Business Meeting6:55 Plant of the Month7:00 Guest Speaker \n\n\n\nWhat’s all the hype about native plants? Through photos and stories\, native Texan Cherie Colburn demonstrates her gardening mantra of “first\, do no harm” by showing how attention to where\, why\, and what’s in our gardens can make us better stewards of our world. \n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker\n\n\n\nA professional landscape designer and native Texan\, Cherie has designed hundreds of low-maintenance commercial and residential landscape designs since 1994 through her company\, Nature’s Tapestry. She’s also helped create schoolyard gardens and habitats throughout Texas. As a garden writer\, she’s authored traditionally published books for both children and adults while also contributing more than 100 magazine and newspaper articles over the last four decades. Cherie’s gardening blog – Garden Dishes – was named by PBS’ Central Texas Gardener as a favorite. \n\n\n\nIn her spare time\, you can find Cherie singing and gardening – often simultaneously – at her home or church in The Woodlands where she feels confident she’s proven the theory that singing to plants makes them grow faster. Or\, maybe that it only works on native plants and noxious weeds! \n\n\n\nIn-person – Parking Pass Required\n\n\n\nNew YELLOW parking passes are needed. If you have a pass\, don’t forget it – you will not get another one if you picked one up previously.
