Through close-up images and quiet moments in the field\, she invites people to slow down and see these tiny creatures with curiosity and amazement. Mika is a Texas Master Naturalist and volunteers with projects such as native bee monitoring and the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center fauna survey. SUMMARY:Ancient Dune Swales: An Ode to the Coastal HeritagePreserve - February 19
DESCRIPTION:Often overlooked\, the native plants of our Gulf Coast play a major role in habitat restoration while quite literally holding all of us along the coast together. This presentation will dive into the science behind a diverse set of plants native to the Gulf Coast and zoom in specifically on those that inhabit Galveston Island’s ancient dune swale complex. \n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker \n\n\n\nLyndsey Ware is an eighth generation Texan with deep roots sunk into the Gulf Coast mud from South Texas to New Orleans\, Ware has been talking to and falling in love with plants all her life. While on a brief hiatus away from her native habitat\, she went back to school and earned a Plant and Soil Science (w/conservation and agricultural horticultural focus) degree from the University of Massachusetts. She has worked the land from an early age\, managed greenhouses\, farms\, and labs\, conducted research as a member of the UMass Extension team\, and often acted as a liaison between growers and academia\, agriculturists and conservationists. While away\, her longing for the Texas and Louisiana ecologies she calls home grew. Upon return to the Lone Star State\, Ware managed Green Star Wetland Plant Farm where she learned more about her beloved hydrophytes that helped her dad navigate duck marshes that he dragged her to as a girl. She then became the Conservation Horticulturist at Houston Botanic Garden before landing her ‘dream job’ stewarding 1\,039 acres of wetlands and prairies\, working with a plethora of unique plants at Artist Boat’s Coastal Heritage Preserve. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur monthly chapter meetings are held on every 3rd Thursday\, January – November. In addition to facilitating the conservation of land\, Ben also serves on the board of directors at the Cow Creek Groundwater Conservation District\, influences regional groundwater management and participates in state water data initiatives. \n\n\n\nBen Eldredge is the Executive Director of the Heart of Texas Conservancy\, a land trust and civically engaged conservation organization based in Boerne\, Texas. Ben will discuss the importance of conserving natural infrastructure in the Hill Country with a focus on policy and conservation easements for preserving the region’s waterways\, water supply and mitigating risks to humans in “Flash Flood Alley.” \n\n\n\nIf you are attending in person\, there is no need to register. DESCRIPTION:“There are a whole host of positive aspects about a native plant business. I want to share the amazing and unexpected things I have leaned.” Dr David Winningham said. \n\n\n\n\nDr. David Winningham\, our February speaker for the Fredericksburgs chapter of NPSOT\, may have a PhD in physics but his love is the “hobby that got out of hand” – the nursery known as the Natives of Texas in the hill country between Kerrville and Medina. \n\n\n\nNurseries didn’t offer native plants in the early 1990s when the Winninghams began searching for those plants that thrive and support the ecology of the Texas Hill Country. As they explored western Texas from San Antonio as far as Big Bend\, they began collecting seeds and cuttings\, focusing on some for the madrone trees that have made the nursery famous.

From building local buzz and getting your library to partner on the project to establishing scientific and common name indexes and creating essential documents\, as well as the benefits and challenges of launching and sustaining a seed library. \n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker\n\n\n\nCraig has had a lifelong love of nature from visiting scores of National Parks across the country on family vacations. During his 40-year career in construction\, engineering\, and facilities\, he worked for eight years for the Lake County (IL) Forest Preserve District\, overseeing the maintenance and construction of over 100 miles of multi-use countywide trails in the 35\,000-acre preserve system. He oversaw the restoration of over 1\,000 acres of wetlands by removing field tiles. His crews battled invasive species from European Buckthorn to Purple Loosestrife. \n\n\n\nSince moving to Texas in 2019 and settling in New Braunfels in 2020\, he has worked to learn the plants of the Blackland Prairie and Edwards Plateau. This includes attending various lectures and symposiums on native Texas plants. He has also completed the Native Plant Society of Texas Native Landscaping Certification Program and is a Texas Master Naturalist. Craig has helped create native seed libraries in Comal\, Hays\, and Guadalupe counties and is working on adding two more. SUMMARY:Native Solutions: Real-World Restoration Stories and the Impact of Local Plants
DESCRIPTION:Native plant communities throughout the Lower Galveston Bay Watershed have been on the decline as open green space is rapidly being lost to urban sprawl\, industrial land use\, and poor land management practices. The loss of biodiversity threatens the overall health of our bay system and its ability to provide habitat for wildlife. Local resources for native plant material adapted to our harsh coastal environment are difficult to find\, forcing consumers to purchase material from non-local sources that lack the genetic adaptations to thrive in our coastal ecosystems. \n\n\n\nTo address these challenges\, the Galveston Bay Foundation (GBF) operates a Native Plant Program that supplies native plant resources for landscape-scale restoration projects. These resources are available to conservation and restoration practitioners\, as well as residential homeowners seeking to utilize native plants in their home landscaping. Through this program\, GBF has implemented a variety of restoration projects across its conservation properties. \n\n\n\nIn this presentation\, GBF will share both successful and unsuccessful stories from these restoration efforts\, illustrating how the Native Plant Program has contributed to the recovery of local plant communities and highlighting lessons learned along the way. These real-world examples will demonstrate the importance of using locally adapted native plants and the impact of restoration work on the health and resilience of the Lower Galveston Bay Watershed.  \n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRicci Simmons is the Conservation Stewardship Manager at the Galveston Bay Foundation (GBF). She has a B.S. in Wildlife Fisheries Sciences and in Rangeland Ecology Management from Texas A&M University\, in addition to an M.S. in Hydrology from Boise State University. Her responsibility at GBF is to promote high species diversity\, improve hydrologic function\, and increase wildlife habitat through vegetation management on protected lands that are sensitive to the health of Galveston Bay.She also oversees monitoring of GBF’s properties using the Land Trust Alliance Standards and Practices\, and manages an upland native plant and emergent freshwater wetland nurseries. Ricci spends most of her free time enjoying the outdoors with her family and especially loves collecting and pressing botanical specimens. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nOur monthly chapter meetings are held on every 3rd Thursday\, January – November. In 2004\, he earned the Texas Master Naturalist designation and now serves as an instructor in that program. After serving as President of the Fredericksburg chapter of NPSOT\, Lonnie was State President of NPSOT in 2012-2013. In 2017\, the society awarded him the Benny Simpson Fellows Award for service to NPSOT. Learn how it works\, why people use it\, and how your observations can contribute to community science. The presentation will conclude with how to participate in the upcoming City Nature Challenge\, a global event that encourages people to document local biodiversity. \n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker\n\n\n\nScott Buckel spent his childhood days exploring the “wild” areas near his home in Houston. He developed an interest in animal behavior\, which led him to study biochemistry in college. He also worked at maintaining fish\, growing plants\, and collecting marine invertebrates. He spent weekends looking for birds and other wildlife along the coast and piney woods of Texas. \n\n\n\nScott also studied photography on his own\, driven in part by his continued interest in animal behavior. His skill improved\, and the positive feedback he received fueled his growing passion for photography. \n\n\n\nScott’s interests compelled him to seek travel opportunities\, which allowed him to observe and film nature. Through reading\, workshops\, and participation in photography clubs–in addition to a great deal of practice–he learned many ways to enhance his skills. \n\n\n\nThrough the years\, his photographic interests expanded to include other forms and styles of photography. Film gave way to digital\, and the tools available for digital photography allowed him to achieve the exceptional results he had always dreamed of. Now\, much of the photography he does is to document nature\, and he is an avid user of iNaturalist. \n\n\n\nIn-person – Parking Pass Required\n\n\n\nDO NOT park in employee parking (enforced 24/7). \n\n\n\nClear Lake Chapter Members: If you have a pass\, don’t forget it – you will not get another one if you picked one up previously.
