Through photos and stories\, native Texan Cherie Colburn demonstrates her gardening mantra of “first\, do no harm” by showing how attention to where\, why\, and what’s in our gardens can make us better stewards of our world. \n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker\n\n\n\nA professional landscape designer and native Texan\, Cherie has designed hundreds of low-maintenance commercial and residential landscape designs since 1994 through her company\, Nature’s Tapestry. She’s also helped create schoolyard gardens and habitats throughout Texas. As a garden writer\, she’s authored traditionally published books for both children and adults while also contributing more than 100 magazine and newspaper articles over the last four decades. Cherie’s gardening blog – Garden Dishes – was named by PBS’ Central Texas Gardener as a favorite. \n\n\n\nIn her spare time\, you can find Cherie singing and gardening – often simultaneously – at her home or church in The Woodlands where she feels confident she’s proven the theory that singing to plants makes them grow faster. DESCRIPTION:Join NPSOT-Williamson County on Thursday\, November 14\, 2024\, when our featured topic will be “Plant Conservation Programs at San Antonio Botanical Garden” with Michael Eason. Free and open to the public. The meeting begins at 7:00 PM.  The guest presentation begins after a short business meeting. \n\n\n\nNOTE: This month’s guest presentation will NOT be recorded for YouTube. \n\n\n\nAbout our topic:  Michael will discuss various plant conservation programs currently underway at the San Antonio Botanical Gardens. Most of these programs are new to the garden and have been initiated in the last several years with the Garden’s new commitment to conservation. \n\n\n\nAbout our speaker: As a conservation botanist and voice for native plants Michael has devoted his career to the conservation of native plants and habitats in Texas and beyond. He currently is the Vice President of Conservation and Collections at San Antonio Botanical Gardens. During his time at the garden\, he has established working partnerships with other like-minded organizations throughout Texas and the nation\, instituted new conservation projects\, and continued to solidify the Gardens commitment to plant conservation in Texas.  \n\n\n\nPreviously\, working as a free-lance botanist and consultant\, he has designed and installed native plant gardens\, and performed a variety of plant surveys on both public and private lands\, including rare plant surveys\, plant inventories\, wetland delineation\, and ecological assessments. During his decade long stint at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center\, he managed projects such as Millennium Seed Bank project\, Floristic Survey of Big Bend National Park\, Ferns of the Trans-Pecos\, and a Review of the Aquatic Invasives of Texas. \n\n\n\nIn 2018 he published the field guide\, Wildflowers of Texas\, and is currently working on several other book projects including Wildflowers and other Plants of Western Texas – a field guide\, Naturalized and Invasive Species of Texas\, and The Native and Naturalized Fabaceae of Texas. \n\n\n\nMichael has served on the Executive Board of the Native Plant Society of Texas (NPSOT)\, is currently the State Botanist for the organization\, has served as co-president of the Big Bend Chapter of NPSOT and is currently heavily involved with the International Oak Society. \n\n\n\nNOTE: this month’s in-person location is the Georgetown Parks & Rec Administration Building\, 1101 N College St\, Georgetown\, Texas 78626.  Come early (6:30 PM) for expert advice\, to check out the seed swap board\, or just to visit. \n\n\n\nThe link to register for Zoom is below. \n\n\n\nThe original meeting announcement is here on the Williamson County Chapter’s blog page.

SUMMARY:Austin Chapter Meeting - Native Grasses and Grasslands of Texas - November 19
DESCRIPTION:Our guest speaker this month is Chris Best (State Botanist\, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service\, Austin\, Texas) presenting\, “Native Grasses and Grasslands of Texas:  Ecology\, conservation\, and restoration of native grasslands in Texas.”    \n\n\n\nThis will be a hybrid meeting\, with both in-person and virtual options. \n\n\n\nThe in-person location is Lakewood Clubhouse (off 360) 7317 Lakewood Drive\, Austin\, TX 78750 \n\n\n\nChris Best earned degrees in Plant Biochemistry and Botany and presented a master’s thesis on the role of arbuscular mycorrhizae in strip mine spoil restoration. From 1985–1989 he was an agroforestry extensionist with the Peace Corps and a consultant for CARE International in Guatemala. He has worked for U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as a Plant Ecologist at Lower Rio Grande Valley NWR (1990–2006) and since 2006 as the agency’s State Botanist in Texas. His primary responsibilities include assessments of plant species for protection under the federal Endangered Species Act and recovery planning of listed plants in Texas. SUMMARY:An Assessment of Native Seed Needs and the Capacity for Their Supply - December 17
DESCRIPTION:A 2023 report from the National Academies of Sciences\, Engineering\, and Medicine says the insufficient supply of seeds from native plants is a major barrier to ecological restoration and other revegetation projects across the United States. The report calls for concerted action to build a more robust native seed supply and industry\, especially as climate change increases the possibility of extreme weather events and wildfires that often damage natural areas. We will review findings and recommendations from the report\, as well as progress that has been made since the report release. \n\n\n\nThis presentation by Kay Havens\, Chicago Botanic Garden is part of the Monarch Conservation Webinar Series by Monarch Joint Venture.

During his 40-year career in construction\, engineering\, and facilities he worked for eight years for the Lake County (IL) Forest Preserve District overseeing the maintenance and construction of over 100 miles of multi-use county wide trails in the 35\,000 acre preserve system. He oversaw the restoration over 1\,000 acres of wetlands by removing field tiles. His crews battled invasive species from European Buckthorn to Purple Loosestrife.  \n\n\n\nSince moving to Texas in 2019 and settling into New Braunfels in 2020 he has worked to learn the plants of the Blackland Prairie and Edwards Plateau. This includes attending various lectures and symposiums on Native Texas Plants. He has also completed the Native Plant Society of Texas – Native Landscaping Certification Program and is a Texas Master Naturalist. Craig has helped create native seed libraries in Comal\, Hays\, and Guadalupe counties and is working on adding two more. He is also the NPSOT State Chair of the Native Seed Committee. \n\n\n\nJan 6 News! DESCRIPTION:Driven by a commitment to water conservation and wildlife support\, Arlon Motsch replaced his traditional grass lawn with a variety of Texas native plants. He will share how he overcame the challenges of plant selection and community skepticism\, while enhancing his home’s aesthetics and sparking a passion for insect photography at the January 28 meeting of the Fredericksburg chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas (NPSOT Fredericksburg). The meeting starts at 6:30 with a social time and the presentation begins at 7 p.m. \n\n\n\n“The vibrant ecosystem Arlon cultivated has provided the perfect setting for capturing detailed images of pollinators and other insects\,” said Jonathan Watt\, new Board President of the Fredericksburg chapter of NPSOT. “His photography\, which now serves as both a creative endeavor and an educational tool\, highlights the ecological value of native plants.” \n\n\n\n“I’m looking forward to sharing the things that worked and those that didn’t while converting our lawn into a pollinator paradise\,” said Motsch. “I’m also going to share a lot of close-up insect photos and discuss the potential for homeowners to create sustainable landscapes that benefit both the environment and their personal hobbies.” \n\n\n\nMotsch has lived near Center Point for seven years and moved there from Midland\, TX. He is an avid amateur photographer who has embraced the world of digital photography on many levels. He is well versed in many types of photography\, but has a strong personal interest in macro\, close-up\, wildlife and nature. He is retired and enjoys the outdoors\, is an avid hiker\, and enjoys kayaking\, van camping and road tripping with camera in hand. He has been known to leave water behind on hikes to carry more camera gear\, make U-turns on interstates to take a picture\, drive many miles down dirt roads to take a picture\, lay in mud\, ants\, and briars to take a picture\, and landscape his yard for bug pictures.  \n\n\n\nNPSOT Fredericksburg holds its monthly meetings on the 4th Tuesday of the month at St. Joseph’s Halle (212 W. SUMMARY:Austin Chapter Meeting - Backyard Birds with Natasia Moore
DESCRIPTION:In this presentation\, Natasia will talk about the importance of birds\, how they’re affected by urbanization\, and ways in which we as residents can provide habitat for birds in our backyards. She will give examples of some of our common urban and suburban birds\, including birds of prey\, as well as some native plants that are beneficial to birds. She will also discuss some of the challenges to keep in mind when providing supplemental resources\, such as food\, water\, and shelter. \n\n\n\nNatasia Moore received her Bachelor’s degree in Natural Resources Management and a Master’s degree in Wildlife\, Aquatics\, and Wildland Science and Management from Texas Tech University. But she also discovered that the urge to collect trees springs from something deeper and more profound: a longing for community\, a vision for the future\, or a path to healing and reconciliation. \n\n\n\nIn this 45-minute talk\, Amy introduces audiences to several of the remarkable people she met from around the world whose lives were transformed by their relationships to trees.
