Tell us a story from the past about our history!\n\n\n\nDo you have a few photos to share of your native plants from last spring\, being visited by a pollinator\, or on a snowy day? We want to see them!\n\n\n\nOur meeting will be held during National Invasive Species Week\, so we would especially love to hear how you have fought and removed invasive plants. The challenge for many comes in how to start\, where to get plants\, and how to best care for them. Naturalist and educator Craig Hensley will share his journey into the world of native plants\, from growing them to enjoying the flush of pollinators and other critters that were invited back\, as a result. He’ll share his observations of what species seem preferred by his “new neighbors\,” as well as what you might expect by venturing into this life and community-altering adventure. \n\n\n\nCraig Hensley is a lifelong learner\, naturalist and educator\, having spent more than 40 years engaging audiences from Minnesota to Texas about the wonders of the natural world from birds and butterflies to the night sky\, native plants\, and everything in-between. He has developed a knack for growing a wide variety of native plants and through those planted in his and wife Terry Lashley’s yard has invited a ever-increasing diversity of fauna\, from bees\, butterflies\, flies\, wasps\, moths and beetles to those critters that eat them\, and those that eat those. Craig has a B.S. in Fisheries and Wildlife Management and a M.S. in Zoology\, and has worked for Texas Parks and Wildlife Department for more than a decade\, as an interpreter and resource specialist at Guadalupe River State Park and for the past five years as one of two Texas Nature Trackers Biologists. He is father to son Dr. Noah Hensley\, PhD. and daughter Dr. Jennifer Hensley\, a pediatrician\, and grandfather to four girls and one boy. \n\n\n\nIf you are attending in person\, there is no need to register. The topic is the “Bottomland Hardwood Forests of North Texas”\, and the presenter is Ben Sandifer.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur program starts at 6:30 for the testing of connections\, with a short chapter update by our president\, Rodney Thomas\, at 7:00\, followed by our presentation. Enter through the door on the south side of the building. \n\n\n\nBen will explore North Texas’ extensive bottomland hardwood forests\, covering the diverse flora and fauna among the Upper Trinity River watershed in North Texas. He is an author\, photographer\, and environmental advocate for parks and open spaces where he can often be found with camera in hand. His award-winning nature photographs have been featured in local\, state\, and national publications. He is a Certified Master Birder through the Audubon Dallas sponsored North Central Texas Master Birder Program. In 2016\, he was named an Honorary Lifetime Texas Master Naturalist for his substantial contributions to the furtherance of the activities of the organization. In addition to his professional life as an accountant\, Ben serves as the naturalist for the historic Dallas Hunting and Fishing Club. \n\n\n\nAs a volunteer\, Ben currently serves as a member of the City of Dallas Forestry Stakeholder Committee\, Trinity Park Conservancy Conservation Committee\, citizen project lead at Big Spring Preserve and citizen project lead for the Friends of the Fish Hatchery at White Rock Lake. In Dallas Great Trinity Forest\, Ben is an EPA and TCEQ certified Texas Stream Team volunteer who monitors water quality at numerous locations in the Dallas Trinity River watershed.

DESCRIPTION:Matt Stahman will discuss the state of local native plant supplies\, the markets for those supplies\, and the need and formation of a supply chain for future markets for native plants and native plant materials. \n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker \n\n\n\nMatt serves as a Regulatory Director for Resource Environmental Solutions (RES) where he specializes in wetlands and endangered species related ecological restoration projects\, especially those associated with mitigation\, and is a registered Professional Wetland Scientist and past president of the Society of Wetland Scientists South Central Chapter (Texas\, Oklahoma\, Arkansas\, Louisiana\, Mississippi\, Alabama) as well as a Certified Ecological Restoration Practitioner through the Society for Ecological Restoration. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThroughout his career\, he has worked on the design\, permitting\, project management\, construction\, and monitoring of multiple ecological restoration projects\, including wetland mitigation banks and consolidated mitigation areas. He has 30 years of experience in Clean Water Act permitting and mitigation\, Endangered Species Act consultations\, National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) environmental impact assessments\, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) filings\, and obtaining various other federal\, state\, and local environmental permits. Matt has worked throughout the United States\, providing environmental compliance consulting for various industries including oil and gas\, public transportation\, telecommunications\, electric utility\, coal mining\, and land development. In his spare time\, he works evenings and weekends for his mom\, who started Stahman Native Plants in 2024\, to develop supplies for native plant hay and other materials for the Houston area. \n\n\n\nOur monthly chapter meetings are held on every 3rd Thursday\, January – November. His ability to read the land\, identify what it needs and create a comprehensive plan for its restoration is a huge part of Native American Seed’s success. \n\n\n\nHe has helped lead riparian restoration projects for San Antonio River Authority and U.S. Army Core of Engineers where NAS did extensive training with staff and created an Operations and Maintenance guide for the long-term care of the project. Other clients include IBM\, HEB Foundation\, Audubon Society\, Texas Parks and Wildlife and Attwater Prairie Chicken National Wildlife Preserve.

He will show you how to identify common firefly species and learn their flash patterns so you can recognize them in the wild. You’ll also discover why fireflies flash and how they use light to attract mates. Additionally\, he will discuss specific threats that are causing fireflies to disappear in many areas of the United States. He is working to document the Texas and Southwest firefly diversity and its natural history regarding their life cycle\, preferred habitat and unique flash patterns. His research is helping to illuminate much of this never before collected information about Texas’s incredibly rich firefly diversity so that others can work to preserve and enjoy it. \n\n\n\nBen is a member of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Firefly Working group. He recently completed the Red List Extinction Risk Assessments for Texas firefly species. Ben studied Biology at Texas State University and is a certified Master Naturalist. Bring your own beverage. \n\n\n\nThe Exploration Green Phase 3A pollinator garden aims to change the expectations of the public and ways people interact with pollinator gardens. The 3A garden started with a grant from the Clear Lake Chapter of the Native Plant Society in September 2024 and is expanding this spring with an additional grant received from H-E-B/Texas Master Naturalist’s Pollinators for Texas initiative. It is a long-term pollinator habitat within the conservancy where volunteers and the public can observe a variety of native plants and their relationships with resident and migrant animals\, as well as omnipresent environmental factors like heat\, wind\, rain\, snow\, and drought. Plant information is part of the design\, and data is collected and evaluated. The aim of these data is to help this garden and others in our area evolve season by season and year by year. This presentation will highlight the challenges\, successes\, and surprises from the first six months and look ahead to the future with the hope of inspiring more members to create public gardens. \n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker\n\n\n\n\nAfter a lifetime in the Houston area spent toiling for oil and gas\, Lynn Porfirio discovered a passion for green volunteer work starting with Trees for Houston\, Galveston Bay Foundation\, and SPLASh. In 2023\, she became a member of Galveston Bay Area Texas Master Naturalist and Native Plant Society to learn about different volunteer opportunities and better understand the nature of the region. The following year\, Lynn completed the Native Landscape Certification Program. Social time 5:30 p.m.\, business meeting 5:40 p.m.\, Plant-of-the-Month 5:50 p.m.\, hour-long program 6:20 p.m.  All presentations are available via Zoom and are recorded for our Youtube channel. \n\n\n\nSusan James resides near Canyon Lake\, TX and has had a lifelong interest in plants.  In addition to extensive reading\, personal research\, and observation on the subject\, she is a class of 2016 LMN graduate\, past NPSOT Lindheimer chapter president and has worked as the gardener for grounds of the Heritage Museum of the Texas Hill Country.  Past activities include plant surveys for Bracken Bat Cave\, Canyon Lake Gorge and a variety of private properties in the area.  Background includes a degree in microbiology from Michigan State University\, graduate studies in electron microscopy at the University of Illinois\, various articles\, patented research at DuPont Dow Elastomers and sales and sales management for Fisher Scientific.

SUMMARY:Why Native Plants? - April 17
DESCRIPTION:Join us at our April chapter meeting where we take a fun look at the who\, what\, where\, when\, why\, and how of native plants. We will grow your native plant vocabulary\, cultivate some knowledge\, and sow some seeds for the change we want to see in the world. Whether you are a native plant novice or a wildscaping whiz\, this will be a great chance to ask questions all the questions you may have been afraid to ask before. If you stump the board member presenters\, we can poll the crowd or add things to our list of future presentation topics! \n\n\n\nOne of our goals this year is to grow our membership\, and this is a great opportunity to bring a friend\, spouse\, grandchild\, or whoever wants to learn more about native plants.  \n\n\n\nAbout the Speakers – Doreen Gallevo and Josh Kelly \n\n\n\nDoreen has been a board member for the Houston Chapter since 2023\, and was elected chapter president this year. She has been a hard core native plant gardener for seven years\, and is passionate about all ecological services plants provide like supporting declining invertebrate populations\, flood mitigation\, cooling\, and carbon capture. Having completed NPSOT’s Native Landscape Certification Program (NLCP)\, she is now engaging in native landscape design projects. Containing well over 100 native species\, her yard is registered as a National Wildlife Federation habitat\, Houston Audubon bird-friendly space\, Texas Pocket Prairie\, and Homegrown National Park.  \n\n\n\nJosh is a native Houstonian and recently became our chapter vice president. He is a commercial landscape construction project manager and is determined to change how our landscape industry functions from the inside. In his spare time\, he can be found botanizing in prairies or volunteering his time on native landscaping projects. He loves not only Texas native plants\, but also Texas critters\, like longhorns and the majestic raptors he has rescued from prairies. He even likes non-native bees\, who he helped tend as a teen/young adult with his father and brothers.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur monthly chapter meetings are held on every 3rd Thursday\, January – November. SUMMARY:iNaturalist City Nature Challenge 2025
DESCRIPTION:Join the City Nature Challenge 2025: San Antonio Metro \n\n\n\nJoin the City Nature Challege 2025: NPSOT Group \n\n\n\nJoin Texas Parks and Wildlife\, Texas Master Naturalists\, Native Plant Society of Texas\,  the Audubon Society\, and many others in a fun challenge to see which city can document the most species during April 25 – April 28\,2025. It is easy to participate by joining an event or making observations on your own using the iNaturalist app. With the iNaturalist app\, you just take a picture of a plant or animal\, and the community will help identify which species it is. Any observation in the San Antonio Metro Area (12 counties are: Atascosa\, Bandera\, Bexar\, Comal\, Gillespie\, Goliad\,  Guadalupe\, Karnes Kendall\, Kerr\, Medina\, Wilson as well as three parks: Enchanted Rock State Natural Area\, Lost Maples State Park\, and Palmetto State Park.) will count during the four-day challenge. You can participate by exploring the life in your backyard\, in your local parks\, public nature areas\, or on a field trip with your local naturalist group. You can also help with IDs for other people’s observations to increase our species count\, come to a bioblitz\, or even hold your own event! \n\n\n\nProject Details: This bioblitz is part of the broader San Antonio Metro Area – City Nature Challenge\, coinciding with other events  \n\n\n\n\n2025 – detaits coming by Nov 2024\n\n\n\n\nObjectives of CNC2025: \n\n\n\n• Foster friendly competition within internal groups and with other urban areas across Texas and the globe.• Collect urban biodiversity data accessible to biologists and scientists.
