The Texas Legislature established this day in 1981 thanks to Carroll Abbott\, a passionate wildflower preservationist. \n\n\n\nThe Carroll Abbott Wildflower Sanctuary\, located in the northwest portion of the Texas Woman’s University campus\, is dedicated to Carroll Abbott\, the founder of the Native Plant Society of Texas. SUMMARY:An Assessment of Native Seed Needs and the Capacity for Their Supply - December 17
DESCRIPTION:A 2023 report from the National Academies of Sciences\, Engineering\, and Medicine says the insufficient supply of seeds from native plants is a major barrier to ecological restoration and other revegetation projects across the United States. The report calls for concerted action to build a more robust native seed supply and industry\, especially as climate change increases the possibility of extreme weather events and wildfires that often damage natural areas. We will review findings and recommendations from the report\, as well as progress that has been made since the report release. \n\n\n\nThis presentation by Kay Havens\, Chicago Botanic Garden is part of the Monarch Conservation Webinar Series by Monarch Joint Venture.

Due to the weather forecast for Central Texas on Thursday evening\, this January 9 meeting will now be held only by Zoom and not in-person.  \n\n\n\nJoin NPSOT-Williamson County on Thursday\, January 9\, 2025\, when our featured topic will be “Creating a Native Seed Library in your Community” with Craig Bruska.  Free and open to the public. The meeting begins at 7:00 PM.  The guest presentation begins after a short business meeting.  \n\n\n\nAbout our topic: Craig’s talk will discuss how to create a native seed library within your community. From building local buzz and getting your library to partner on the project to establishing scientific and common name indexes and creating needed documents\, as well as the benefits and the challenges. \n\n\n\nAbout our speaker: Craig has had a lifelong love of nature from visiting scores of National Parks across the country on family vacations. During his 40-year career in construction\, engineering\, and facilities he worked for eight years for the Lake County (IL) Forest Preserve District overseeing the maintenance and construction of over 100 miles of multi-use county wide trails in the 35\,000 acre preserve system. He oversaw the restoration over 1\,000 acres of wetlands by removing field tiles. His crews battled invasive species from European Buckthorn to Purple Loosestrife.  \n\n\n\nSince moving to Texas in 2019 and settling into New Braunfels in 2020 he has worked to learn the plants of the Blackland Prairie and Edwards Plateau. This includes attending various lectures and symposiums on Native Texas Plants. He has also completed the Native Plant Society of Texas – Native Landscaping Certification Program and is a Texas Master Naturalist. Craig has helped create native seed libraries in Comal\, Hays\, and Guadalupe counties and is working on adding two more. He is also the NPSOT State Chair of the Native Seed Committee. \n\n\n\nJan 6 News! An ecologist by trade\, Adam holds degrees in ecology and evolutionary biology as well as business from Rice University. SUMMARY:Transform Your Lawn into Native Plant Haven and Photography Studio
DESCRIPTION:Driven by a commitment to water conservation and wildlife support\, Arlon Motsch replaced his traditional grass lawn with a variety of Texas native plants. He will share how he overcame the challenges of plant selection and community skepticism\, while enhancing his home’s aesthetics and sparking a passion for insect photography at the January 28 meeting of the Fredericksburg chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas (NPSOT Fredericksburg). The meeting starts at 6:30 with a social time and the presentation begins at 7 p.m. \n\n\n\n“The vibrant ecosystem Arlon cultivated has provided the perfect setting for capturing detailed images of pollinators and other insects\,” said Jonathan Watt\, new Board President of the Fredericksburg chapter of NPSOT. “His photography\, which now serves as both a creative endeavor and an educational tool\, highlights the ecological value of native plants.” \n\n\n\n“I’m looking forward to sharing the things that worked and those that didn’t while converting our lawn into a pollinator paradise\,” said Motsch. “I’m also going to share a lot of close-up insect photos and discuss the potential for homeowners to create sustainable landscapes that benefit both the environment and their personal hobbies.” \n\n\n\nMotsch has lived near Center Point for seven years and moved there from Midland\, TX. He is an avid amateur photographer who has embraced the world of digital photography on many levels. He is well versed in many types of photography\, but has a strong personal interest in macro\, close-up\, wildlife and nature. He is retired and enjoys the outdoors\, is an avid hiker\, and enjoys kayaking\, van camping and road tripping with camera in hand. He has been known to leave water behind on hikes to carry more camera gear\, make U-turns on interstates to take a picture\, drive many miles down dirt roads to take a picture\, lay in mud\, ants\, and briars to take a picture\, and landscape his yard for bug pictures.  \n\n\n\nNPSOT Fredericksburg holds its monthly meetings on the 4th Tuesday of the month at St. Joseph’s Halle (212 W. San Antonio St.\, Fredericksburg). SUMMARY:Austin Chapter Meeting - Backyard Birds with Natasia Moore
DESCRIPTION:In this presentation\, Natasia will talk about the importance of birds\, how they’re affected by urbanization\, and ways in which we as residents can provide habitat for birds in our backyards. She will give examples of some of our common urban and suburban birds\, including birds of prey\, as well as some native plants that are beneficial to birds. She will also discuss some of the challenges to keep in mind when providing supplemental resources\, such as food\, water\, and shelter. \n\n\n\nNatasia Moore received her Bachelor’s degree in Natural Resources Management and a Master’s degree in Wildlife\, Aquatics\, and Wildland Science and Management from Texas Tech University. She is currently an Urban Wildlife Biologist with Texas Parks and Wildlife\, where she performs professional planning\, management\, research and public outreach associated with wildlife\, habitat and natural resource management specific to the Greater Austin area. Is it the extreme heat during the summer\, the extended heat waves\, the severe cold events\, the extended drought\, or all of it? Once we can identify and name the stresses\, let’s consider what we can do to maintain tree health and diversity in Bexar County. \n\n\n\nMichael has more than 15 years of experience in community forestry management and program development. The challenge for many comes in how to start\, where to get plants\, and how to best care for them. Naturalist and educator Craig Hensley will share his journey into the world of native plants\, from growing them to enjoying the flush of pollinators and other critters that were invited back\, as a result. He’ll share his observations of what species seem preferred by his “new neighbors\,” as well as what you might expect by venturing into this life and community-altering adventure. \n\n\n\nCraig Hensley is a lifelong learner\, naturalist and educator\, having spent more than 40 years engaging audiences from Minnesota to Texas about the wonders of the natural world from birds and butterflies to the night sky\, native plants\, and everything in-between. He has developed a knack for growing a wide variety of native plants and through those planted in his and wife Terry Lashley’s yard has invited a ever-increasing diversity of fauna\, from bees\, butterflies\, flies\, wasps\, moths and beetles to those critters that eat them\, and those that eat those. Craig has a B.S. in Fisheries and Wildlife Management and a M.S. in Zoology\, and has worked for Texas Parks and Wildlife Department for more than a decade\, as an interpreter and resource specialist at Guadalupe River State Park and for the past five years as one of two Texas Nature Trackers Biologists. He is father to son Dr. Noah Hensley\, PhD. and daughter Dr. Jennifer Hensley\, a pediatrician\, and grandfather to four girls and one boy. \n\n\n\nIf you are attending in person\, there is no need to register. DESCRIPTION:Our March 4 chapter program will be a hybrid meeting\, with attendance available at the Heard Museum in McKinney or via Zoom. The topic is the “Bottomland Hardwood Forests of North Texas”\, and the presenter is Ben Sandifer.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur program starts at 6:30 for the testing of connections\, with a short chapter update by our president\, Rodney Thomas\, at 7:00\, followed by our presentation. Enter through the door on the south side of the building. \n\n\n\nBen will explore North Texas’ extensive bottomland hardwood forests\, covering the diverse flora and fauna among the Upper Trinity River watershed in North Texas. He is an author\, photographer\, and environmental advocate for parks and open spaces where he can often be found with camera in hand. His award-winning nature photographs have been featured in local\, state\, and national publications. He is a Certified Master Birder through the Audubon Dallas sponsored North Central Texas Master Birder Program. In 2016\, he was named an Honorary Lifetime Texas Master Naturalist for his substantial contributions to the furtherance of the activities of the organization. In addition to his professional life as an accountant\, Ben serves as the naturalist for the historic Dallas Hunting and Fishing Club. \n\n\n\nAs a volunteer\, Ben currently serves as a member of the City of Dallas Forestry Stakeholder Committee\, Trinity Park Conservancy Conservation Committee\, citizen project lead at Big Spring Preserve and citizen project lead for the Friends of the Fish Hatchery at White Rock Lake. In Dallas Great Trinity Forest\, Ben is an EPA and TCEQ certified Texas Stream Team volunteer who monitors water quality at numerous locations in the Dallas Trinity River watershed.
