Bring your own beverage. \n\n\n\nThe Exploration Green Phase 3A pollinator garden aims to change the expectations of the public and ways people interact with pollinator gardens. The 3A garden started with a grant from the Clear Lake Chapter of the Native Plant Society in September 2024 and is expanding this spring with an additional grant received from H-E-B/Texas Master Naturalist’s Pollinators for Texas initiative. It is a long-term pollinator habitat within the conservancy where volunteers and the public can observe a variety of native plants and their relationships with resident and migrant animals\, as well as omnipresent environmental factors like heat\, wind\, rain\, snow\, and drought. Plant information is part of the design\, and data is collected and evaluated. The aim of these data is to help this garden and others in our area evolve season by season and year by year. This presentation will highlight the challenges\, successes\, and surprises from the first six months and look ahead to the future with the hope of inspiring more members to create public gardens. \n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker\n\n\n\n\nAfter a lifetime in the Houston area spent toiling for oil and gas\, Lynn Porfirio discovered a passion for green volunteer work starting with Trees for Houston\, Galveston Bay Foundation\, and SPLASh. In 2023\, she became a member of Galveston Bay Area Texas Master Naturalist and Native Plant Society to learn about different volunteer opportunities and better understand the nature of the region. The following year\, Lynn completed the Native Landscape Certification Program. She is the owner of Native Ideas Yard Care and designer and champion of the 3a pollinator garden. \n\n\n\n\nIn-person – Parking Pass Required\n\n\n\nIf you have a pass\, don’t forget it – you will not get another one if you picked one up previously. Social time 5:30 p.m.\, business meeting 5:40 p.m.\, Plant-of-the-Month 5:50 p.m.\, hour-long program 6:20 p.m.  All presentations are available via Zoom and are recorded for our Youtube channel. \n\n\n\nSusan James resides near Canyon Lake\, TX and has had a lifelong interest in plants.  In addition to extensive reading\, personal research\, and observation on the subject\, she is a class of 2016 LMN graduate\, past NPSOT Lindheimer chapter president and has worked as the gardener for grounds of the Heritage Museum of the Texas Hill Country.  Past activities include plant surveys for Bracken Bat Cave\, Canyon Lake Gorge and a variety of private properties in the area.  Background includes a degree in microbiology from Michigan State University\, graduate studies in electron microscopy at the University of Illinois\, various articles\, patented research at DuPont Dow Elastomers and sales and sales management for Fisher Scientific.

SUMMARY:Why Native Plants? - April 17
DESCRIPTION:Join us at our April chapter meeting where we take a fun look at the who\, what\, where\, when\, why\, and how of native plants. We will grow your native plant vocabulary\, cultivate some knowledge\, and sow some seeds for the change we want to see in the world. Whether you are a native plant novice or a wildscaping whiz\, this will be a great chance to ask questions all the questions you may have been afraid to ask before. If you stump the board member presenters\, we can poll the crowd or add things to our list of future presentation topics! \n\n\n\nOne of our goals this year is to grow our membership\, and this is a great opportunity to bring a friend\, spouse\, grandchild\, or whoever wants to learn more about native plants.  \n\n\n\nAbout the Speakers – Doreen Gallevo and Josh Kelly \n\n\n\nDoreen has been a board member for the Houston Chapter since 2023\, and was elected chapter president this year. She has been a hard core native plant gardener for seven years\, and is passionate about all ecological services plants provide like supporting declining invertebrate populations\, flood mitigation\, cooling\, and carbon capture. Having completed NPSOT’s Native Landscape Certification Program (NLCP)\, she is now engaging in native landscape design projects. Containing well over 100 native species\, her yard is registered as a National Wildlife Federation habitat\, Houston Audubon bird-friendly space\, Texas Pocket Prairie\, and Homegrown National Park.  \n\n\n\nJosh is a native Houstonian and recently became our chapter vice president. He is a commercial landscape construction project manager and is determined to change how our landscape industry functions from the inside. In his spare time\, he can be found botanizing in prairies or volunteering his time on native landscaping projects. He loves not only Texas native plants\, but also Texas critters\, like longhorns and the majestic raptors he has rescued from prairies. He even likes non-native bees\, who he helped tend as a teen/young adult with his father and brothers.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur monthly chapter meetings are held on every 3rd Thursday\, January – November. DESCRIPTION:Join the City Nature Challenge 2025: San Antonio Metro \n\n\n\nJoin the City Nature Challege 2025: NPSOT Group \n\n\n\nJoin Texas Parks and Wildlife\, Texas Master Naturalists\, Native Plant Society of Texas\,  the Audubon Society\, and many others in a fun challenge to see which city can document the most species during April 25 – April 28\,2025. It is easy to participate by joining an event or making observations on your own using the iNaturalist app. With the iNaturalist app\, you just take a picture of a plant or animal\, and the community will help identify which species it is. Any observation in the San Antonio Metro Area (12 counties are: Atascosa\, Bandera\, Bexar\, Comal\, Gillespie\, Goliad\,  Guadalupe\, Karnes Kendall\, Kerr\, Medina\, Wilson as well as three parks: Enchanted Rock State Natural Area\, Lost Maples State Park\, and Palmetto State Park.) will count during the four-day challenge. You can participate by exploring the life in your backyard\, in your local parks\, public nature areas\, or on a field trip with your local naturalist group. You can also help with IDs for other people’s observations to increase our species count\, come to a bioblitz\, or even hold your own event! \n\n\n\nProject Details: This bioblitz is part of the broader San Antonio Metro Area – City Nature Challenge\, coinciding with other events  \n\n\n\n\n2025 – detaits coming by Nov 2024\n\n\n\n\nObjectives of CNC2025: \n\n\n\n• Foster friendly competition within internal groups and with other urban areas across Texas and the globe.• Collect urban biodiversity data accessible to biologists and scientists. DESCRIPTION:In ecological restoration\, especially in disturbed or urbanized areas\, the goal of returning to a singular “climax state” often clashes with the complex reality of the world. We tend to hold onto an idealized vision of a pre-human\, pristine ecological state\, overlooking the diverse outcomes as the result of complex processes interacting. What seems like failure or degradation may actually be the emergence of a new kind of mental interpretational climax\, shaped by input factors\, altered assumptions\, novel assemblages\, and community interactions. By shifting our perspective to recognize multiple expressions of resilience\, our role becomes less about enforcing a template and more about listening\, inquiring\, and collaborating with what exists. He has 15 years of experience working within diverse ecosystems for a wide array of project types. His position places an emphasis leading the technical ecological restoration of projects\, managing construction and adaptive management\, and helping clients meet their compensatory mitigation requirements. His background includes environmental restoration planning\, stakeholder engagement\, construction\, planting\, and ecological uplift assessment. Andy’s specialties include aquatic feature delineations and jurisdictional determinations\, Clean Water Act permitting\, threatened and endangered species identification and consultations\, NEPA compliance\, plant identification\, and community classification. His favorite ecosystems include longleaf pine savannas\, coastal prairies\, and southern Appalachian forests. DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Julia Weatherby \n\n\n\nMonarch butterflies are losing important food and habitat leading their populations to decline. The Native Plant Society of Texas awards grants to schools\, nature centers and other gardens. These grants fund spring and fall blooming native plants and native milkweed for our Monarchs to survive and successfully migrate through Texas. This presentation covers our experience with our plant planning and installation\, lessons learned\, how school children interact with the garden\, how we organize and encourage families to join in work days\, and which Texas native plants we recommend for gardens that are public and where children have full access.  \n\n\n\nJulia Weatherby is the President of the Austin Chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas. She is also a lead organizer of the native plant gardens at Reilly Elementary School. Julia has an educational and work background in technology and healthcare. She has served on the board of the Mothers’ Milk Bank at Austin and volunteered with AGE of Central Texas and Partners in Parenting. Brent will discuss the geologic\, hydrologic\, and ecological characteristics of the Aquifer that make it so unique and critical to both the communities and ecosystem it serves. \n\n\n\nResearch Manager for the Edwards Aquifer Authority’s Aquifer Science and Modeling Team\, Brent Doty is a geoscientist with more than 16 years of experience in hydrogeology and water resources management. Brent is a licensed professional geoscientist in Texas and holds an M.S. in Natural Resources Management and a graduate certificate in Water Conflict Management and Transformation from Oregon State University. \n\n\n\nBrent’s role includes the development and execution of several research initiatives to better understand the Edwards Aquifer System and to provide decision makers with the best available science to manage\, enhance\, and protect the Edwards Aquifer System. Brent has worked on several key initiatives\, including surface and groundwater interactions\, aquifer vulnerability assessments\, and emerging contaminant studies. Much of his current work focuses on quantifying the potential benefits of nature-based land management solutions as a managed aquifer recharge project. Brent is also the lead geologist responsible for assessing potential conservation easement properties for the City of San Antonio’s Edwards Aquifer Protection Program\, a 300 million-plus dollar conservation initiative that has protected more than 180\,000 acres of environmentally sensitive land over the Edwards Aquifer Recharge and Contributing zones. \n\n\n\nIn his spare time\, you can find Brent paddleboarding\, hiking\, or mountain biking across the beautiful Texas Hill Country. \n\n\n\nIf you are attending in person\, there is no need to register. In this presentation\, Lauren Simpson shares tips for using a smartphone to take clear\, beautiful\, and impactful photos of native plants and their wildlife visitors. \n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker\n\n\n\nSince early 2015\, and in her individual capacity\, Lauren Simpson has transformed her family’s home gardens into a wildlife-friendly habitat\, currently a Certified Wildlife Habitat\, Monarch Waystation\, Certified Monarch Garden\, and Certified Butterfly Garden. She promotes insect conservation and habitat gardening through presentations\, events\, interviews\, and articles\, as well as through a website and Instagram and Facebook communities under the appellation “St. Julian’s Crossing Wildlife Habitat”—the name adopted for her family’s Monarch Waystation. Ms. Simpson is a member of local chapters of the Native Plant Society of Texas (NPSOT)\, Native Prairies Association of Texas\, and North American Butterfly Association. She has also received Level 1 and Level 2 certifications through the NPSOT Native Landscape Certification Program (NLCP)\, has attended the “Monarch Conservation Workshop: Train the Trainer” training\, and formerly served as member and chair of the NPSOT subcommittee for the NLCP Advocacy companion class. \n\n\n\nIndependent of her naturalist activities\, Lauren Simpson is a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Houston Law Center\, teaching Lawyering Skills and Strategies. She is a spring 2016 recipient of the University of Houston Teaching Excellence Award (Instructor/Clinical category); one of three 2018 AALS Teachers of the Year selected by the Law Center; and the 2017\, 2018\, 2019 (co-recipient)\, 2021\, 2022\, 2023\, and 2025 Student Bar Association Professor of the Year for Law Center faculty teaching in the part-time program. SUMMARY:Endangered Species Act: Plant Protection and Beyond - June 19
DESCRIPTION:June’s talk will focus on the basics of the federal Endangered Species Act (ESA) law\, emphasizing the protections the ESA scheme can offer plants. The ESA is often considered one of the most efficient legal tools we currently have for conservation and has both a fascinating cultural and legal history. Topics will include the ESA’s history\, the administrative process for the ESA\, and current happenings in the ESA field.  \n\n\n\nThis talk will be given by Alex Keiser and Elizabeth Hidalgo\, who help out with our chapter’s newsletter and Instagram\, respectively. Alex and Elizabeth are both practicing environmental attorneys and lovers of the flora and fauna of the Coastal South. \n\n\n\nOur monthly chapter meetings are held on every 3rd Thursday\, January – November.
