SUMMARY:Rewilding Our Perception of What Belongs - May 15
DESCRIPTION:In ecological restoration\, especially in disturbed or urbanized areas\, the goal of returning to a singular “climax state” often clashes with the complex reality of the world. We tend to hold onto an idealized vision of a pre-human\, pristine ecological state\, overlooking the diverse outcomes as the result of complex processes interacting. What seems like failure or degradation may actually be the emergence of a new kind of mental interpretational climax\, shaped by input factors\, altered assumptions\, novel assemblages\, and community interactions. By shifting our perspective to recognize multiple expressions of resilience\, our role becomes less about enforcing a template and more about listening\, inquiring\, and collaborating with what exists. Restoration becomes a relationship.  \n\n\n\nPhoto courtesy of Andrea Matthews\n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker \n\n\n\nAndy Newman is the Chief Ecologist at The Earth Partners. He has 15 years of experience working within diverse ecosystems for a wide array of project types. His position places an emphasis leading the technical ecological restoration of projects\, managing construction and adaptive management\, and helping clients meet their compensatory mitigation requirements. His background includes environmental restoration planning\, stakeholder engagement\, construction\, planting\, and ecological uplift assessment. Andy’s specialties include aquatic feature delineations and jurisdictional determinations\, Clean Water Act permitting\, threatened and endangered species identification and consultations\, NEPA compliance\, plant identification\, and community classification. His favorite ecosystems include longleaf pine savannas\, coastal prairies\, and southern Appalachian forests. If his name sounds familiar\, he also leads our field trips!  \n\n\n\nOur monthly chapter meetings are held on every 3rd Thursday\, January – November. DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Julia Weatherby \n\n\n\nMonarch butterflies are losing important food and habitat leading their populations to decline. The Native Plant Society of Texas awards grants to schools\, nature centers and other gardens. These grants fund spring and fall blooming native plants and native milkweed for our Monarchs to survive and successfully migrate through Texas. This presentation covers our experience with our plant planning and installation\, lessons learned\, how school children interact with the garden\, how we organize and encourage families to join in work days\, and which Texas native plants we recommend for gardens that are public and where children have full access.  \n\n\n\nJulia Weatherby is the President of the Austin Chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas. She is also a lead organizer of the native plant gardens at Reilly Elementary School. Julia has an educational and work background in technology and healthcare. She has served on the board of the Mothers’ Milk Bank at Austin and volunteered with AGE of Central Texas and Partners in Parenting. Elizabeth includes a grass identification activity – for those of us who appreciate that there are more grasses than wildflowers but we just don’t know their names.

Brent will discuss the geologic\, hydrologic\, and ecological characteristics of the Aquifer that make it so unique and critical to both the communities and ecosystem it serves. \n\n\n\nResearch Manager for the Edwards Aquifer Authority’s Aquifer Science and Modeling Team\, Brent Doty is a geoscientist with more than 16 years of experience in hydrogeology and water resources management. Brent is a licensed professional geoscientist in Texas and holds an M.S. in Natural Resources Management and a graduate certificate in Water Conflict Management and Transformation from Oregon State University. \n\n\n\nBrent’s role includes the development and execution of several research initiatives to better understand the Edwards Aquifer System and to provide decision makers with the best available science to manage\, enhance\, and protect the Edwards Aquifer System. Brent has worked on several key initiatives\, including surface and groundwater interactions\, aquifer vulnerability assessments\, and emerging contaminant studies. Much of his current work focuses on quantifying the potential benefits of nature-based land management solutions as a managed aquifer recharge project. Brent is also the lead geologist responsible for assessing potential conservation easement properties for the City of San Antonio’s Edwards Aquifer Protection Program\, a 300 million-plus dollar conservation initiative that has protected more than 180\,000 acres of environmentally sensitive land over the Edwards Aquifer Recharge and Contributing zones. \n\n\n\nIn his spare time\, you can find Brent paddleboarding\, hiking\, or mountain biking across the beautiful Texas Hill Country. \n\n\n\nIf you are attending in person\, there is no need to register. In this presentation\, Lauren Simpson shares tips for using a smartphone to take clear\, beautiful\, and impactful photos of native plants and their wildlife visitors. \n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker\n\n\n\nSince early 2015\, and in her individual capacity\, Lauren Simpson has transformed her family’s home gardens into a wildlife-friendly habitat\, currently a Certified Wildlife Habitat\, Monarch Waystation\, Certified Monarch Garden\, and Certified Butterfly Garden. She promotes insect conservation and habitat gardening through presentations\, events\, interviews\, and articles\, as well as through a website and Instagram and Facebook communities under the appellation “St. Julian’s Crossing Wildlife Habitat”—the name adopted for her family’s Monarch Waystation. Ms. Simpson is a member of local chapters of the Native Plant Society of Texas (NPSOT)\, Native Prairies Association of Texas\, and North American Butterfly Association. She has also received Level 1 and Level 2 certifications through the NPSOT Native Landscape Certification Program (NLCP)\, has attended the “Monarch Conservation Workshop: Train the Trainer” training\, and formerly served as member and chair of the NPSOT subcommittee for the NLCP Advocacy companion class. \n\n\n\nIndependent of her naturalist activities\, Lauren Simpson is a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Houston Law Center\, teaching Lawyering Skills and Strategies. She is a spring 2016 recipient of the University of Houston Teaching Excellence Award (Instructor/Clinical category); one of three 2018 AALS Teachers of the Year selected by the Law Center; and the 2017\, 2018\, 2019 (co-recipient)\, 2021\, 2022\, 2023\, and 2025 Student Bar Association Professor of the Year for Law Center faculty teaching in the part-time program. DESCRIPTION:June’s talk will focus on the basics of the federal Endangered Species Act (ESA) law\, emphasizing the protections the ESA scheme can offer plants. The ESA is often considered one of the most efficient legal tools we currently have for conservation and has both a fascinating cultural and legal history. Topics will include the ESA’s history\, the administrative process for the ESA\, and current happenings in the ESA field.  \n\n\n\nThis talk will be given by Alex Keiser and Elizabeth Hidalgo\, who help out with our chapter’s newsletter and Instagram\, respectively. DESCRIPTION:The blank slate around a newly constructed house challenged muscles and opened the mind to a vision of opportunities. \n\n\n\nIn preparation for landscaping around her new house on the 120 year-old Leyendecker family farm in SW Gillespie County\, Kathy Saucier began propagating natives in a personal nursery of as many as 1300 pots. The experience opened up a new world in which to explore Texas natives and their connection to the wildlife around us.

DESCRIPTION:Our July 1 chapter meeting will include a presentation by Roger Sanderson on “Ecological Importance of Landscaping with Native Plants – Trees & Shrubs“. You can attend either in-person at the Heard Museum in McKinney or virtually via Zoom. \n\n\n\nSouthern Blackhaw Viburnum\, (Viburnum rufidulum)\n\n\n\nThe naturalist Doug Tallamy has brilliantly elucidated the critical need for using native plants in our home gardens and landscapes. Most people concerned about the natural world know that we need native plants to provide food for insects\, which in turn are necessary to provide food for birds and other animals. They also provide fruits to feed them directly and flowers to maintain pollinator populations to ensure their reproduction. So which trees and shrubs are most beneficial\, and provide the most uses to the most species of insects\, birds\, or animals – especially the ones we most want to share our backyards with? This presentation will cover a wide variety of trees and shrubs and what each provides. We will review which birds\, bugs\, or other wildlife use them\, their advantages to the home landscape\, and how they sustain the local ecology and a healthy environment. \n\n\n\nJoining our Meeting\n\n\n\nDoors (and Zoom) open at 6:30 PM for connection testing and setup. He was Director of Horticulture at the Texas Discovery Gardens for over 7 years. In addition\, he was the Director of Botanical Gardens / Wildlife Biologist at the Heard Natural Science Museum for the prior 11 years. Roger also owned his own landscape company\, which he still operates part-time. A specialist on Pollinator Gardens\, he created a huge Butterfly Garden and Hummingbird Garden of national acclaim at Texas Discovery Gardens. He also developed noteworthy pollinator gardens at the Heard Museum\, Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge\, the Dallas Mayor’s Pollinator Garden\, and for numerous schools throughout the DFW area. Roger had a weekly column for several years in the Dallas Morning News on plants and gardening and continues to write articles about nature in several publications.

Let’s share ideas and support one another in growing the organization and supporting the mission!  \n\n\n\nJuly Topic: Using Slack\, Our New Workspace Platform \n\n\n\nDescription:  \n\n\n\nThis Chapter Leader Forum will provide an overview of the cloud-based communications platform\, “Slack”\, which is replacing the Society’s use of “Workplace from Meta” as our virtual office because Meta is discontinuing Workplace effective August 31\, 2025. \n\n\n\nSlack participation will be limited to Staff\, State Board members\, and members of active State committees\, and invitations will be sent out shortly. SUMMARY:Bees! How We Can Help Them - July 17
DESCRIPTION:July’s talk will focus on our pollinator friends\, bees! Our speaker is Colin McKenzie\, who has worked for the USDA\, the National Park Service\, and the Bureau of Land Management. He will discuss a history of bees and their role in our ecosystem\, as well as their life histories\, taxonomic relationships\, ecology\, and anatomy. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur monthly chapter meetings are held on every 3rd Thursday\, January – November. DESCRIPTION:Arrive at 6:30pm to share or find native plants at the Plants x Donation table. \n\n\n\nThis will be a “hybrid” meeting\, attend in-person or online. \n\n\n\n\nIn person: The Gathering Center at the Urban Ecology Center at Phil Hardberger Park\, 8400 NW Military Hwy\n\n\n\nOnline: Please register in advance to attend via Zoom.\n\n\n\n\nPresentation by Marisa Bruno\, Phil Hardberger ParkWorking with Developers and HOAs on Native and Water-Wise Landscapes\n\n\n\nIn the spring of 2025\, the Hill Country Alliance released a new resource\, “Model Language for HOAs in the Texas Hill Country: A Practical Guide for Protecting and Preserving Water Resources\, Native Landscapes\, and Night Skies.” Written with input from over 30 water utility leaders and conservation experts\, this guide promotes a new standard for landscaping in new developments and helps established HOAs update their landscaping policies to better conserve natural resources. In this presentation\, Marisa Bruno will present an overview of the guide and share reflections and learnings on the initial rollout to new developments and established HOAs. Additionally\, the Greater Edwards Aquifer Alliance will present its complimentary guide\, “Watershed Stewardship for the Edwards Aquifer Region: A Low Impact Development Manual.” Attendees will leave with two new tools in their toolkit for promoting native landscapes and protecting water resources! \n\n\n\nIf you are attending in person\, there is no need to register. However\, if you are attending via Zoom\, please register here before the meeting begins as late registration and entry will not be allowed. SUMMARY:Be Prepared for the Next Wildfire with Fire-Resistant Landscaping
DESCRIPTION:A spark can quickly become a wildfire like it did during the Crabapple fire that burned nearly 10\,000 acres and destroyed nine residences and several other buildings. Are you ready for the next fire? A fire could strike at any moment and with the right conditions threaten your home regardless if you live on acreage in the county or in a subdivision. \n\n\n\nDayziah Petruska\, Wildland Urban Interface Coordinator for Texas A&M Forest Service Region 6 (which includes Gillespie County) will speak about the basics of fire behavior and how property owners can prepare for and decrease the risk of structure loss in wildfire situations. She will also discuss home hardening strategies and fire-resistant landscaping.  \n\n\n\nThe meeting begins at 7 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Halle (212 W. San Antonio St.\, Fredericksburg) and doors open at 6:30 p.m. for social time.
