Join us for a fascinating\, microscope-guided exploration of the soil food web\, the complex underground ecosystem that powers native plant communities. From beneficial fungi that form root partnerships to tiny predators that balance soil populations\, this talk reveals the often-overlooked organisms essential to plant health\, nutrient cycling\, and ecological restoration. \n\n\n\nAbout our speaker: Laurie Dixon is a landscape design consultant with a strong focus on ecological principles and the founder of Biotic Lens\, a consultancy dedicated to soil microscopy education and applications. She combines her background in landscape design with specialized soil microscopy to help growers and landscapers implement a biological approach. SUMMARY:Three years\, 75 acres and 100\,000 wetland plants: Creating a wetland at John Paul Landing Park in Katy - October 16
DESCRIPTION:The very large John Paul Landing park on the far west side of Harris County is at the epicenter of rapid neighborhood development\, and the Harris County Engineering Department planned an expansion of the lake in the park to absorb stormwater runoff. Remarkably\, wetlands were designed into the plans from the outset. Mary Carol Edwards’ company Green Star Wetland Plant Farm was subcontracted to source\, propagate\, and deliver the plants for each of the three phases of lake excavation and planting. She will discuss the results\, adventures\, and lessons learned along the way\, as well as introduce some of the key native species that found a new home in the project. \n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMary Carol founded Green Star Wetland Plant Farm in 2018 to meet a need for native aquatic species for all kinds of projects\, from backyard raingardens to large acreage restorations. She previously worked as the stormwater wetland specialist for Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service’s Texas Community Watershed Partners\, as well as TCWP’s freshwater wetland restoration program\, at landscape design and landscape architecture firms\, and also in genetics research labs at Baylor College of Medicine and Rice University. Mary Carol is a Houston native\, raised on Galveston Bay. She has a BS in Biology and an MA in Architecture from the University of Houston and enjoys bringing both disciplines together to create wonderful natural settings. \n\n\n\nOur monthly chapter meetings are held on every 3rd Thursday\, January – November. It’s an ongoing journey of finding out what works and what doesn’t. The meeting begins at 7:00 PM.  The guest presentation begins after a short business meeting. \n\n\n\n[Updated Nov 12] About our topic: It’s time to up the biodiversity in your life and grasslands are a great way to do so! \n\n\n\n[Updated Nov 12] About our speaker: About our speaker: John Hart Asher has over 15 years of experience designing and building functional ecosystems within urban conditions. He has conducted basic research in ecological engineering\, ecological restoration\, and land management\, offered workshops to professionals and the general public\, and provided fee-supported ecological consulting expertise to clients across Texas. As part of the consulting team at Blackland Collaborative\, John Hart works with integrated design teams composed of engineers\, architects\, landscape architects\, and developers to integrate sustainable design\, practices\, and philosophies into projects. He specializes in translating sustainable design into successful projects that provide varying layers of ecosystem services. His main interest is the application of ecological design\, resulting in functional sustainable landscapes within urban ecologies. A few of his current projects include: Tall grass prairie restoration in an urban riparian corridor\, native prairie green roof design\, residential pocket prairies\, sustainable roadsides\, and green infrastructure. \n\n\n\nJohn Hart worked on the green roof design and implementation for Bercy Chen Studio’s Edgeland House\, which was featured in Dwell and Texas Architect magazines and has won several awards\, including Architizer’s A+ Jury and Popular Choice Awards\, the 2016 Design Award of Excellence from Green Roofs for Healthy Cities and the Texas Society of Architects 2016 Design Award. Edgeland House was also featured in Phaidon’s “Elemental Living: Contemporary Houses in Nature\,” and most recently was documented in AppleTV’s HOME series that explores exemplary and innovative designs. He holds a bachelor’s in history from the University of Mississippi and a master’s in landscape architecture from The University of Texas at Austin\, which awarded him a President’s Outstanding Staff Award in April 2018. He’s a dedicated environmental professional who specializes in bridging design concepts and ecological function and demonstrates strong project management skills with the proven ability to design\, assess\, and investigate landscape restoration installations\, performance\, and measures. He has carried out research and development of green roof technology with the aim of improving performance and application within semi-arid\, sub-tropical climates\, and has helped design and build numerous native prairie green roofs all over the state of Texas. In 2019 he also stepped in to serve as host of the nationally syndicated PBS show\, Central Texas Gardener. The meeting begins at 7:00 PM.  The guest presentation begins after a short business meeting. \n\n\n\nAbout our topic: Cindy’s talk will explore the natural world and the processes that depend on the absence of artificial light. It will include a number of species but will emphasize issues that plants have with artificial lighting. Issues of navigation\, reproduction\, circadian rhythms\, photoperiodism\, competition\, predation\, and general habitat protection will be covered. Cindy will also touch on some issues that humans have with artificial light at night. The talk wraps up with a review of what each of us can do to protect living things during the nighttime. \n\n\n\nAbout our speaker: Cindy Luongo Cassidy is the leader of DarkSky Texas\, formerly known as The Texas Chapter of the International Dark-Sky Association\, a founding member of several night sky groups\, and a Hays County Master Naturalist. She has twenty-five plus years of experience as a lighting consultant and dark sky advocate\, was the key player in positioning the City of Dripping Springs to receive the prestigious International Dark Sky Community designation (the first in Texas)\, and has assisted numerous other International Dark Sky Place applications in Texas. In 2019\, Cindy was awarded the Crawford-Hunter Lifetime Achievement Award\, the highest honor that DarkSky International bestows on individuals who\, during their lifetime\, have contributed an extraordinary effort to light pollution abatement. How can we encourage the use of more native plants in our community and still make HOAs happy? \n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker\n\n\n\nDiane Wetherbee is a Texas Master Naturalist\, as well as a member of the Native Prairies Association of Texas and the Native Plant Society of Texas. She is a board member of the Upper Trinity Conservation Trust and also serves as vice chairman of the board of The Flower Mound Foundation\, which cares for the 12.5-acre prairie remnant that gives the town its name. Diane is a Certified Citizen Forester and is a board member of the Cross Timbers Urban Forestry Council. After a career in corporate communications and product marketing\, she turned to her first love – the natural world. She was an interpretive naturalist and environmental educator at LLELA for 12 years and has completed coursework toward a Ph.D. in forestry at Stephen F. Austin State University. In her spare time\, she serves as a member of Lantana’s Denton County Fresh Water Supply District 7 Board of Directors and is the chairman of the Lantana HOA Architectural Review Committee. \n\n\n\nIn-person – Parking Pass Required\n\n\n\nClear Lake Chapter Members: If you have a pass\, don’t forget it – you will not get another one if you picked one up previously. DESCRIPTION:Native plants are often seen as the solution to degraded landscapes\, yet many native plantings can struggle to fully establish or perform over time. This talk explores what native plants require belowground in order to truly thrive\, and why soil function often determines success long before species selection does. By examining soil as a dynamic system that governs water\, biology\, and resilience\, this discussion reframes native plants not as a shortcut to restoration\, but as indicators of underlying land health. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker \n\n\n\nErik Fritz is an edaphodynamic engineer and founder of Tierra Buena Regenerative\, a firm focused on diagnosing and correcting soil and land systems as functional infrastructure. His work centers on soil as a dynamic system governing water movement\, nutrient cycling\, biological activity\, and long-term landscape performance. Rather than treating surface symptoms\, he designs soil-level interventions that restore function\, stability\, and resilience across agricultural\, urban\, and restoration landscapes. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur monthly chapter meetings are held on every 3rd Thursday\, January – November. DESCRIPTION:A Balancing Act: Managing Aquatic Plant Communities as Habitat in the San Marcos River \n\n\n\nJanuary’s speaker will be Emily Lorkovic\, Wildlife & Fisheries Biologist\, Ecological Research Group\, The Meadows Center for Water and the Environment. \n\n\n\nEmily Lorkovic is a Wildlife and Fisheries Biologist at the Meadows Center for Water and the Environment. Her work focuses on aquatic habitat restoration\, endangered species management\, and long-term stewardship of the San Marcos River. Her background lies in stream restoration\, aquatic invasive species\, and freshwater mussels. \n\n\n\nPresentation summaryRather than focusing on individual plant species\, this talk will look at aquatic plant restoration in the San Marcos River through a habitat and decision-making lens. I will discuss how we plan and manage plant communities in a system with multiple endangered species that have distinct and sometimes competing habitat needs\, and how funding\, regulatory requirements\, and long-term maintenance shape those decisions. The goal is to share how we think through tradeoffs\, uncertainty\, and balance when managing native plant communities in a highly diverse but constrained river system. \n\n\n\n\n\nLocation: Tye Preston Memorial Library\, 16311 S.
