SUMMARY:Party in the Prickly Pear – Williamson County Chapter Meeting\, June 11
DESCRIPTION:Join NPSOT-Williamson County on Thursday\, June 11\, 2026\, when our featured topic will be “Party in the Prickly Pear” with Becky Roe. Free and open to the public. The meeting begins at 7:00 PM.  The guest presentation begins after a short business meeting. \n\n\n\nAbout our topic: Prickly pear occurs throughout the state of Texas; it’s even our state plant. Have you ever really thought about this cactus? We will take a look at this family of native plants. First\, a little about cacti in general and what makes prickly pear different. What is its place in nature? How have humans used it in the past and today? This will be a fun look at a plant we see everyday. \n\n\n\nAbout our speaker: Becky Roe is a lifelong nature lover; she found her niche when she became a Master Naturalist in 2022 with the Good Water chapter. As a Master Naturalist\, her interest in plants has intensified\, especially native plants\, which led to her joining the Native Plant Society in 2023. She is a member of the Tonkawa Chapter and is an associate member of the Williamson County Chapter. Becky also volunteers at Mother Neff State Park as often as possible\, helping with school field trip days and leading guided plant hikes. She enjoys sharing with others how plants interact with all the other parts of nature\, and with how people have historically used those plants. \n\n\n\n==> This month’s in-person location is the Georgetown Public Library\, 2nd floor\, 402 West 8th St\, Georgetown\, TX 78626. Come early (6:30 PM) for expert advice\, to check out the seed swap board\, or just to visit. \n\n\n\n==> To attend via Zoom\, register at https://npsot-org.zoom.us/meeting/register/pvggnm-ASyKwDxXu7aVpAA#/registration \n\n\n\nThe original meeting announcement is here on the Williamson County Chapter’s blog page. \n\n\n\nAt every meeting\, we give away a book — about native plants or the meeting topic — to one randomly chosen in-person attendee!

Much of this woody cover consists of native juniper trees\, commonly called mountain cedars. Instead of causing harm\, we now know mountain cedars act as ecosystem engineers to improve and sustain Texas karst country function. Come learn about these benefits and what we can do to use mountain cedars as another nature-based solution to help enhance soil health\, groundwaters\, productivity\, property values\, and resilience. \n\n\n\nIf you are attending in person\, there is no need to register. SUMMARY:Native Swagger: Turning Heads with Texas Native Plants – Williamson County Chapter Meeting\, May 14
DESCRIPTION:Join NPSOT-Williamson County on Thursday\, May 14\, 2026\, when our featured topic will be “Native Swagger: Turning Heads with Texas Native Plants” with Andrea DeLong-Amaya. Free and open to the public. The meeting begins at 7:00 PM.  The guest presentation begins after a short business meeting. \n\n\n\nPlease note => This month’s guest presentation will NOT be recorded for YouTube. \n\n\n\nAbout our topic: Native plants are ecological powerhouses while representing our botanical heritage. But too often\, they’re dismissed as messy or weedy. It’s time to change the narrative! In this talk\, we’ll explore how to use native plants to create gardens that are true people-pleasers. From wild to formal designs\, lawns to containers\, sun to shade\, wildlife gardens to water gardens\, even edible gardens — you’ll see how natives provide habitat while they also serve as the anchor for stunning landscapes. Whether you’re already a native-plant champion or just native-curious\, you’ll come away with ideas to elevate your garden and give native plants the starring role they deserve. \n\n\n\nBONUS BOOK SIGNING! Bring your copy of Andrea’s book The Texas Native Plant Primer for Andrea to sign! If you don’t have it yet\, be sure to purchase the primer before the meeting. Copies will NOT be available for sale at the meeting. Options for purchasing include the NPSOT Bookstore\, or Timber Press. \n\n\n\nAbout our speaker:Andrea DeLong-Amaya (ahn-DRAY-ah di-LONG ah-MY-ah)Horticulture Educator\, Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center \n\n\n\nFor over three decades\, Andrea DeLong-Amaya has been living her life’s mission to honor the natural world through presenting and teaching classes about the horticulture\, ecology\, and importance of native plants in planned landscapes. \n\n\n\nOver the prior 21 years\, she served as the Wildflower Center’s Director of Horticulture\, overseeing the nine acres of Texas native plant gardens\, and nursery programs. She’s been a staff member since 1998 and has over 30 years of experience with Texas native plants in horticulture\, ecology and garden design. Recently\, she has taken on a new role at the Wildflower Center focusing more on teaching and advancing interpretation in the gardens. \n\n\n\nAndrea has contributed numerous gardening articles to publications such as Taunton’s Fine Gardening\, Rodale’s Organic Gardening\, American Public Gardens Association’s Public Garden\, Neil Sperry’s Gardens and e-Gardens\, Texas Gardener and Wildflower (the Center’s member magazine). Her regionally best-selling book\, the Texas Native Plant Primer (Timber Press)\, was released in March of 2025. \n\n\n\nAndrea has appeared numerous times on Central Texas Gardener\, PBS’s long-running television program\, and was a two-time guest on WNYC’s Science Friday. Jennifer Jewell featured Andrea’s work in her 2020 book\, “The Earth in Her Hands: 75 Extraordinary Women Working in the World of Plants\,” and interviewed DeLong-Amaya on the podcast Cultivating Place. \n\n\n\nThe Scott Arboretum of Swarthmore College honored Andrea with the prestigious 2025 Scott Garden & Horticulture Award in March 2025. SUMMARY:“Designing for Maintenance”\, Fredericksburg chapter meeting - April 28
DESCRIPTION:Paula Stone\, gardener extraordinaire and past president of the Fredericksburg chapter\, entices us with the promise of fewer hours with garden chores and more time spent in the pleasure of your accomplishment.  “Designing for Maintenance” puts you in control of your destiny.  \n\n\n\nIn 2009 Paula Stone bought 10 acres of worn out land on the edge of Fredericksburg. The vision this avid native plant gardener had was not what she saw – a land littered with tires\, washing machines and golf balls – but of one that incorporated the natural beauty and life of Texas. In 16 years of stewardship she transformed that environment into a garden that invites song birds\, pollinators and visitors to enjoy peace and home. She also designed the gardens to require little outside maintenance. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPaula shares her tips and secrets to put you on the patio with a glass of lemonade enjoying the beauty of your own garden.

To see the competing civic projects in our area\, go to the Civic umbrella group.  \n\n\n\nRemember\, you have until May 10 at 11:59 pm to join the NPSOT civic project 2026 and to make additional I-Naturalist entries for observations done between April 24 and 27.  Note:  If you already joined another civic project (e.g. AAMN or SARA River Warriors)\, remember that it is best to register for only one civic project if you want the entries to count towards a group’s competition totals.  If you join multiple civic projects\, your observations will show on all projects\, but will not be counted towards the competition. \n\n\n\nAll of the NPSOT chapters in the approved  San Antonio Metro Area (12 counties) are grouped together in the NPSOT civic project.  So if you know folks in other NPSOT chapters in these counties\, please encourage them to join the NPSOT civic project as well! \n\n\n\nSecond\, CNC-SA organizers could really use the support of NPSOT members in identifying CNC observations (especially plants).   Even if you weren’t able to make observations during the event\, you can still contribute by helping with identifications. Even out-of-state members can review and ID observations from our area\, and those contributions count toward our CNC efforts.  There are several identification (ID) parties happening this week\, with a few more still being finalized and not yet on the schedule.  Look for scheduled events here: Link \n\n\n\nJOIN THE NPSOT CIVIC PROJECT AND START IDENTIFYING OBSERVATIONS!

SUMMARY:iNaturalist City Nature Challenge 2026
DESCRIPTION:Join the iNaturalist Project here! \n\n\n\nMark your calendars! From April 24–27\, 2026\, San Antonio will join cities around the globe in a wild celebration of biodiversity\, curiosity\, and community science. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCity Nature Challenge is a fun\, competitive way to see which city can make the most observations of local flora and fauna during the City Nature Challenge\, April 24-27\, 2026. \n\n\n\nThe City Nature Challenge began in 2016 as a friendly rivalry between San Francisco and Los Angeles. That first year\, LA took the win with 10\,352 observations\, 1\,601 species\, and 574 participants. Since then\, the challenge has blossomed into a global movement — with cities from every continent documenting the wild life that lives alongside us. \n\n\n\n🌼 Why It Matters \n\n\n\nEvery observation helps scientists understand and protect our ecosystems. It’s also a chance to slow down\, reconnect\, and remember that we are part of nature — not separate from it. \n\n\n\nLet’s show the world what San Antonio’s wild heart looks like. Let’s walk gently\, notice deeply\, and upload with joy. \n\n\n\nJoin the iNaturalist Project here!

SUMMARY:Using iNaturalist for the City Nature Challenge – Hybrid Clear Lake Chapter Meeting
DESCRIPTION:6:15 Doors Open – UHCL Bayou Building\, Forest Room (B1430)6:40 Zoom Opens6:45 Business Meeting6:55 Plant of the Month7:00 Guest Speaker \n\n\n\nJoin us for an evening of delicious pizza\, exciting door prizes\, and the chance to connect with others while learning something new! Bring your own beverage. \n\n\n\nScott Buckel will introduce iNaturalist\, a free app and online platform used to record observations of plants and animals. Learn how it works\, why people use it\, and how your observations can contribute to community science. The presentation will conclude with how to participate in the upcoming City Nature Challenge\, a global event that encourages people to document local biodiversity. \n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker\n\n\n\nScott Buckel spent his childhood days exploring the “wild” areas near his home in Houston. He developed an interest in animal behavior\, which led him to study biochemistry in college. He also worked at maintaining fish\, growing plants\, and collecting marine invertebrates. He spent weekends looking for birds and other wildlife along the coast and piney woods of Texas. \n\n\n\nScott also studied photography on his own\, driven in part by his continued interest in animal behavior. His skill improved\, and the positive feedback he received fueled his growing passion for photography. \n\n\n\nScott’s interests compelled him to seek travel opportunities\, which allowed him to observe and film nature. Through reading\, workshops\, and participation in photography clubs–in addition to a great deal of practice–he learned many ways to enhance his skills. \n\n\n\nThrough the years\, his photographic interests expanded to include other forms and styles of photography. Film gave way to digital\, and the tools available for digital photography allowed him to achieve the exceptional results he had always dreamed of. Now\, much of the photography he does is to document nature\, and he is an avid user of iNaturalist. \n\n\n\nIn-person – Parking Pass Required\n\n\n\nDO NOT park in employee parking (enforced 24/7). \n\n\n\nClear Lake Chapter Members: If you have a pass\, don’t forget it – you will not get another one if you picked one up previously.
