Through photos and stories\, native Texan Cherie Colburn demonstrates her gardening mantra of “first\, do no harm” by showing how attention to where\, why\, and what’s in our gardens can make us better stewards of our world. \n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker\n\n\n\nA professional landscape designer and native Texan\, Cherie has designed hundreds of low-maintenance commercial and residential landscape designs since 1994 through her company\, Nature’s Tapestry. She’s also helped create schoolyard gardens and habitats throughout Texas. As a garden writer\, she’s authored traditionally published books for both children and adults while also contributing more than 100 magazine and newspaper articles over the last four decades. Cherie’s gardening blog – Garden Dishes – was named by PBS’ Central Texas Gardener as a favorite. \n\n\n\nIn her spare time\, you can find Cherie singing and gardening – often simultaneously – at her home or church in The Woodlands where she feels confident she’s proven the theory that singing to plants makes them grow faster. DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Coauthors of Land Stewardship for Birds – Jan Wrede: Environmental Educator and Writer; Rufus Stephens: Wildlife Biologist \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRiparian corridors have the greatest diversity of bird species and the greatest abundance of individual birds compared to most other habitat types. Also\, riparian birds are an excellent indicator of riparian and aquatic ecosystem health\, and stewardship for birds along riparian corridors increases the quality of the entire ecosystem. This webinar will discuss breeding and migratory bird species that live in different levels of the riparian and aquatic habitats and have different survival needs. Yet\, it is a nature-deprived neighborhood\, putting the human community at risk for rising temperatures\, air pollution\, and increased stress levels. Fortunately an effort is underway to plant trees\, provide nature-rich shade shelters\, bus stops and more! Part of this transformation is the Greener Gulfton effort and we will tell that story. \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker\n\n\n\nJaime González is an award-winning conservationist\, environmental educator\, public speaker\, and coalition builder working at the intersection of human health\, biodiversity conservation\, equity\, and climate action. He works to influence policy\, secure funding\, catalyze planning and embed community-based projects that unlock the power of nature for community well-being and environmental health. Jaime serves as board chair for the North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE)\, as a board member for Madres del Parque\, and as a climate justice advisor to Harris County. He formerly worked for The Nature Conservancy\, the Coastal Prairie Conservancy\, Houston Arboretum & NatureCenter\, and the Nature Heritage Society. \n\n\n\nJaime has won numerous local\, state\, and national awards for his work\, including the Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Houston’s College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics\, the 2022 Houston Visionary Award from Center for Houston’s Future\, the Prairie Champion Award from the Coastal Prairie Conservancy\, and the Elizabeth Hull Abernathy Award from the Garden Club of America for outstanding contributions to environmental education of youth. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur monthly chapter meetings are held on every 3rd Thursday\, January – November. Photo courtesy of Eric Ruckstuhl.\n\n\n\nIf you are not aware (but we hope you are)\, an invasive species is defined as a non-native species to the ecosystem whose introduction causes or is likely to cause economic or environmental harm or harm to human health. Our speaker this month\, Eric Ruckstuhl\, has been removing invasive\, exotic plants throughout Texas for more than 25 years. Join us to learn about his work removing invasive species in Texas and witness the unveiling of his results mapping the lost palms of Texas\, Sabal mexicana. \n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker – Eric Ruckstuhl \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEric Ruckstuhl is a native Houstonian who has lived in Cypress with his wife and two sons for 27 years. His company\, EBR Enterprises\, has been involved in habitat restoration for 30 years\, and invasive plant removal for over 25 years. He is a fluvial geomorphologist and a native plant and wetland specialist. (Since this newsletter editor had to look up fluvial geomorphology\, I’ll share that it is the study of the physical processes that shape and maintain river and stream form\, recognizing that an in-depth understanding of a river’s history and site specific conditions are critical to successful management and restoration. Now we know.) Eric is also a licensed Herbicide Applicator\, with Aquatic and Land Management certifications. \n\n\n\n\n\nOur monthly chapter meetings are held on every 3rd Thursday\, January – November. Everyone is invited to participate and there is no minimum length\, but we request presentations to be limited to 10 minutes. The only requirement is that you show and discuss native Texas plants. \n\n\n\nThe meeting will be a hybrid\, with attendance options either in-person at the Heard Museum’s Laughlin Hall or virtually via Zoom. Enter Laughlin Hall from the southern entrance to the museum. Presenters can be in person or remote. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTo participate\, all you need to do is send an email to timcast@gmail.com with a PowerPoint\, Google Slides\, or PDF that you will be showing. Please convert presentations in Apple’s Keynote software to one of these formats. Also\, please do not send photos – convert them into a PDF format using Microsoft’s or Apple’s “Print to PDF” function. This will ensure your photos are in the order you want to present. \n\n\n\nSocial time starts at 6:30 pm\, at 7:00 our chapter president\, Rodney Thomas\, will give a brief chapter update\, and followed by the showing and telling of our native plants. Native grasses not only add structural interest but also create valuable wildlife habitats. Cheryl Barajas will share insights on how to seamlessly incorporate these grasses into your garden. Bev Morrison will cover the selection and approaches to groundcovers\, many of which can lead to minimal or even turf-free lawns. But be cautious—some ground covers can spread quickly! Using native grasses and groundcovers in your garden is easier and more beautiful than you might expect. \n\n\n\nAbout the Speakers\n\n\n\nCheryl Barajas is a dedicated native plant enthusiast\, currently serving as the Plant Sale Committee Chair. With her expertise as a Master Gardener since 2012 and a Master Naturalist since 2019\, Cheryl’s passion for the environment and over five years of active membership in the Native Plant Society make her a valued advocate for sustainable gardening and native plant conservation. \n\n\n\nBev Morrison has recently developed an interest in plants\, despite not having a gardening background. She is a Master Naturalist\, teaches fourth graders through the Longhorn Project\, and volunteers at various nature and conservation sites. Although she enjoys birding\, her primary interests are prairies and trees. Bev is eager to share her knowledge about trees through the Native Landscape Certification Program (NLCP) while continuing to learn herself. \n\n\n\nIn-person – Parking Pass Required\n\n\n\nNew YELLOW parking passes are needed.
