SUMMARY:Encouraging Native Plantings in HOA Landscapes – Hybrid Clear Lake Chapter Meeting
DESCRIPTION:6:15 Doors Open – UHCL Bayou Building\, Forest Room (B1430)6:40 Zoom Opens6:45 Business Meeting6:55 Garden Notes7:00 Guest Speaker \n\n\n\nJoin us for an evening of delicious pizza\, exciting door prizes\, and the chance to connect with others while learning something new! Bring your own beverage. \n\n\n\nWe often hear\, “My HOA won’t let me plant native plants.” The fact is\, Texas state law prohibits HOAs from disallowing water-wise landscaping\, but does allow them to require the landscaping fit into the general aesthetic of the neighborhood. How can we encourage the use of more native plants in our community and still make HOAs happy? \n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker\n\n\n\nDiane Wetherbee is a Texas Master Naturalist\, as well as a member of the Native Prairies Association of Texas and the Native Plant Society of Texas. She is a board member of the Upper Trinity Conservation Trust and also serves as vice chairman of the board of The Flower Mound Foundation\, which cares for the 12.5-acre prairie remnant that gives the town its name. Diane is a Certified Citizen Forester and is a board member of the Cross Timbers Urban Forestry Council. After a career in corporate communications and product marketing\, she turned to her first love – the natural world. She was an interpretive naturalist and environmental educator at LLELA for 12 years and has completed coursework toward a Ph.D. in forestry at Stephen F. Austin State University. SUMMARY:Below the Roots: Why Native Plants Depend on Soil Function to Truly Thrive - January 15
DESCRIPTION:Native plants are often seen as the solution to degraded landscapes\, yet many native plantings can struggle to fully establish or perform over time. This talk explores what native plants require belowground in order to truly thrive\, and why soil function often determines success long before species selection does. By examining soil as a dynamic system that governs water\, biology\, and resilience\, this discussion reframes native plants not as a shortcut to restoration\, but as indicators of underlying land health. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker \n\n\n\nErik Fritz is an edaphodynamic engineer and founder of Tierra Buena Regenerative\, a firm focused on diagnosing and correcting soil and land systems as functional infrastructure. His work centers on soil as a dynamic system governing water movement\, nutrient cycling\, biological activity\, and long-term landscape performance. Rather than treating surface symptoms\, he designs soil-level interventions that restore function\, stability\, and resilience across agricultural\, urban\, and restoration landscapes. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur monthly chapter meetings are held on every 3rd Thursday\, January – November. Our meetings are free and open to the public thanks to our members and sponsors. \n\n\n\nThe presentation will start at 7:00 pm\, but come at 6:45 pm for a meet and greet with snacks. \n\n\n\nHouston Arboretum and Nature Center \n\n\n\n610 Entrance (preferred)120 W Loop N FwyHouston\, TX 77024 \n\n\n\nWoodway Entrance4501 Woodway DriveHouston\, TX 77024 \n\n\n\nMeetings will also be live-streamed and recorded for later viewing. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReturn to Houston Chapter Page

SUMMARY:Lindheimer Chapter Monthly Meeting
DESCRIPTION:A Balancing Act: Managing Aquatic Plant Communities as Habitat in the San Marcos River \n\n\n\nJanuary’s speaker will be Emily Lorkovic\, Wildlife & Fisheries Biologist\, Ecological Research Group\, The Meadows Center for Water and the Environment. \n\n\n\nEmily Lorkovic is a Wildlife and Fisheries Biologist at the Meadows Center for Water and the Environment. Her work focuses on aquatic habitat restoration\, endangered species management\, and long-term stewardship of the San Marcos River. Her background lies in stream restoration\, aquatic invasive species\, and freshwater mussels. \n\n\n\nPresentation summaryRather than focusing on individual plant species\, this talk will look at aquatic plant restoration in the San Marcos River through a habitat and decision-making lens. I will discuss how we plan and manage plant communities in a system with multiple endangered species that have distinct and sometimes competing habitat needs\, and how funding\, regulatory requirements\, and long-term maintenance shape those decisions. The goal is to share how we think through tradeoffs\, uncertainty\, and balance when managing native plant communities in a highly diverse but constrained river system. \n\n\n\n\n\nLocation: Tye Preston Memorial Library\, 16311 S. Access Road\, Canyon Lake\, Texas 78133. All presentations are available via Zoom and are recorded for our Youtube channel.

SUMMARY:Rosettes\, the Harbingers of Spring\, Fredericksburg\, Jan 30
DESCRIPTION:We had to cancel the January 27 meeting due to the residues of the snow/ice storm in the Hill Country. But Kathy Saucier\, our Gillespie County resident Certified Wildscape instructor\, will still make a live presentation on YouTube on January 30 at 3:00 pm. \n\n\n\n\n“Do you see those tiny rosettes that are nestled against the earth? Each one is soaking up sunshine.” \n\n\n\n\n\nA closer look under the fallen stems and leaves of last year’s wildflowers and grasses reveals that many new plants have already germinated and are showing their first and second sets of leaves. \n\n\n\n\n\n“Each one is converting winter moisture into the wondrous explosion of color that makes the Hill Country famous for its wildflower display” Saucier said. What you don’t see is what the plant will produce. Will it be a plant you desire or one you are trying to control? \n\n\n\n\nDuring this evening presentation\, Saucier will open our eyes to the variety of rosettes that are the opening scene of summer’s perennials. She will also identify which of those rosettes is a weed. Join us January 30. Click the Live event below.

SUMMARY:Collin County February Meeting - Ecology and Beauty: Creating a Landscape that Welcomes Wildlife and People (Online only)
DESCRIPTION:Note: Speakers handout is available for download: https://www.naturesactionguide.org/ecology \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur February 3 chapter meeting will be online only via Zoom. The speaker is Sarah F. Jayne – she is an environmentalist\, educator\, and wildlife advocate. Her book “Nature’s Action Guide: How to Support Biodiversity and Your Local Ecosystem” is a companion to Doug Tallamy’s “Nature’s Best Hope: A New Approach to Conservation That Starts in Your Yard” and features 15 urgent actions to support biodiversity. \n\n\n\nPresentation Summary\n\n\n\nNow more than ever our yards and community spaces need to support biodiversity. How can we ensure that our spaces are both ecologically rich and beautiful? We’ll look at which plants matter most when it comes to your local biodiversity; how to procure them for generous plantings; and how to place them to increase their appeal to wildlife and people\, along with strategies to protect the wildlife our natural plantings attract. We’ll consider strategies to ensure that our landscapes gain community acceptance such that they become invitations for others to transform their landscapes. A cost-conscious\, DIY approach makes taking action doable. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker Bio \n\n\n\nSarah’s work has been featured in The Joe Gardener Show\, A Way to Garden podcast\, Homegrown National Park\, and the New York Times. She is a member of the Homegrown National Park Speaker Bureau and has contributed excerpts of her book\, Nature’s Action Guide\, to the Homegrown National Park’s “Get Started Planting Native”. \n\n\n\nTo Join Our Meetings\n\n\n\nThis is an online-only meeting via Zoom. SUMMARY:Ancient Dune Swales: An Ode to the Coastal HeritagePreserve - February 19
DESCRIPTION:Often overlooked\, the native plants of our Gulf Coast play a major role in habitat restoration while quite literally holding all of us along the coast together. This presentation will dive into the science behind a diverse set of plants native to the Gulf Coast and zoom in specifically on those that inhabit Galveston Island’s ancient dune swale complex. \n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker \n\n\n\nLyndsey Ware is an eighth generation Texan with deep roots sunk into the Gulf Coast mud from South Texas to New Orleans\, Ware has been talking to and falling in love with plants all her life. While on a brief hiatus away from her native habitat\, she went back to school and earned a Plant and Soil Science (w/conservation and agricultural horticultural focus) degree from the University of Massachusetts. She has worked the land from an early age\, managed greenhouses\, farms\, and labs\, conducted research as a member of the UMass Extension team\, and often acted as a liaison between growers and academia\, agriculturists and conservationists. While away\, her longing for the Texas and Louisiana ecologies she calls home grew. Upon return to the Lone Star State\, Ware managed Green Star Wetland Plant Farm where she learned more about her beloved hydrophytes that helped her dad navigate duck marshes that he dragged her to as a girl. She then became the Conservation Horticulturist at Houston Botanic Garden before landing her ‘dream job’ stewarding 1\,039 acres of wetlands and prairies\, working with a plethora of unique plants at Artist Boat’s Coastal Heritage Preserve.

SUMMARY:Lessons Learned Running a Native Plant Nursery\, Fredericksburg chapter - Feb 24
DESCRIPTION:“There are a whole host of positive aspects about a native plant business. I want to share the amazing and unexpected things I have leaned.” Dr David Winningham said. \n\n\n\n\nDr. David Winningham\, our February speaker for the Fredericksburgs chapter of NPSOT\, may have a PhD in physics but his love is the “hobby that got out of hand” – the nursery known as the Natives of Texas in the hill country between Kerrville and Medina. \n\n\n\nNurseries didn’t offer native plants in the early 1990s when the Winninghams began searching for those plants that thrive and support the ecology of the Texas Hill Country. As they explored western Texas from San Antonio as far as Big Bend\, they began collecting seeds and cuttings\, focusing on some for the madrone trees that have made the nursery famous.
