Native grasses not only add structural interest but also create valuable wildlife habitats. Cheryl Barajas will share insights on how to seamlessly incorporate these grasses into your garden. Bev Morrison will cover the selection and approaches to groundcovers\, many of which can lead to minimal or even turf-free lawns. But be cautious—some ground covers can spread quickly! Using native grasses and groundcovers in your garden is easier and more beautiful than you might expect. \n\n\n\nAbout the Speakers\n\n\n\nCheryl Barajas is a dedicated native plant enthusiast\, currently serving as the Plant Sale Committee Chair. With her expertise as a Master Gardener since 2012 and a Master Naturalist since 2019\, Cheryl’s passion for the environment and over five years of active membership in the Native Plant Society make her a valued advocate for sustainable gardening and native plant conservation. \n\n\n\nBev Morrison has recently developed an interest in plants\, despite not having a gardening background. She is a Master Naturalist\, teaches fourth graders through the Longhorn Project\, and volunteers at various nature and conservation sites. Although she enjoys birding\, her primary interests are prairies and trees. Bev is eager to share her knowledge about trees through the Native Landscape Certification Program (NLCP) while continuing to learn herself. \n\n\n\nIn-person – Parking Pass Required\n\n\n\nNew YELLOW parking passes are needed. Parking & Transportation will be checking! Patty Steinke will be outside handing out passes. If you have a pass\, don’t forget it – you will not get another one if you picked one up previously. If you need a pass\, arrive early enough to pick one up and place it in your car. She has written extensively about Aldo Leopold and served as board chair of the Leopold Foundation. In addition to numerous articles\, she has authored or edited ten books\, among them Thinking Like a Mountain: Aldo Leopold and the Evolution of an Ecological Attitude; The Great Lakes Forest; The River of the Mother of God and Other Essays by Aldo Leopold; Towards Sustainability for Missouri Forests; and Missouri State Parks and Historic Sites. She is a founder and past president of the American Society for Environmental History and the Missouri Parks Association. She has lectured in nearly every state and on five continents\, served on many professional and environmental boards and committees\, and won numerous national and state awards for publications and conservation.

The meeting begins at 7:00 PM.  Our guest speaker’s presentation begins after a short business meeting. \n\n\n\nThis month’s guest presentation will NOT be recorded for our YouTube channel. \n\n\n\nAbout our topic: This presentation will tell the story of the forgotten MoKan Prairie of Williamson County. This prairie was the “crown jewel” of our Central Texas prairies\, and you’ll hear the dramatic (but ultimately futile) account of the efforts to protect it. We’ll also explore some of the special MoKan Prairie plants and our efforts to save those plant genetics through seed collecting and plant salvage. \n\n\n\nAbout our speaker: Ashley Landry is a Texas Master Naturalist\, a member of the Native Plant Society of Texas\, and the founder of the Native Plant Rescue Project. She has been featured in Wildflower magazine\, The Austin Chronicle\, Central Texas Gardener and the Liberty Hill Independent.
