SUMMARY:Collin County June Meeting: Encouraging Native Landscapes in HOA Neighborhoods
DESCRIPTION:Our Tuesday June 2nd chapter meeting will be available to attend in person at the Heard Museum in McKinney or online via Zoom. The program will feature Diane Wetherbee presenting on “Encouraging Native Landscapes in HOA Neighborhoods”. Plus\, we will have a guided walk through the Heard’s Gardens. \n\n\n\nTexas Discovery Gardens\n\n\n\nPresentation Summary\n\n\n\nWe often hear\, “My HOA won’t let me plant native plants.” The fact is\, Texas state law prohibits HOAs from disallowing water-wise landscaping but does allow them to require that landscaping fit the neighborhood’s general aesthetic. How can we encourage the use of more native plants in our community while keeping HOAs happy? \n\n\n\nAttendance Options\n\n\n\nOur meetings are free and open to the public. This is a hybrid meeting held at the Heard Museum in McKinney and virtually via Zoom. \n\n\n\n\nLocation (in-person): Laughlin Hall at the Heard Museum. Please enter through the south doors of the building.\n\n\n\nZoom Link: https://tinyurl.com/yn85nbzd – Passcode: 571904; Meeting ID: 885 5459 6572\n\n\n\nDoors and Zoom Open: 6:30 PM (for setup and connection testing)\n\n\n\nMeeting Begins: 7:00 PM\, with a brief update from Chapter President Rodney Thomas\, followed by the featured presentation.\n\n\n\n\nWe look forward to seeing you at our program! \n\n\n\nHeard Museum Native Garden Walk\n\n\n\nBefore the meeting\, join us for a guided walk through the Heard Gardens. Our schedule is as follows: \n\n\n\n5:45 – Begin gathering in Laughlin Hall for Garden Walk6:00 – Garden Walk begins6:45 – Garden Walk concludes \n\n\n\nAbout our Speaker\n\n\n\nDiane is a Texas Master Naturalist\, as well as a member of the Native Prairies Association of Texas and the Native Plant Society of Texas. She is a board member of the Upper Trinity Conservation Trust and also serves as vice chairman of the board of The Flower Mound Foundation\, which cares for the 12.5-acre prairie remnant that gives the town its name. Diane is a Certified Citizen Forester and is a board member of the Cross Timbers Urban Forestry Council. SUMMARY:Boerne City Campus Natural Area (BCCNA) Workday
DESCRIPTION:Join us for BCCNA workdays! \n\n\n\nThe BCCNA project involves the restoration and enhancement of the Boerne City Campus Natural Area (BCCNA). If you don’t see us at the windmill\, walk out behind the library across the creek as we’ve likely already started!  \n\n\n\nEach volunteer will be required to fill out the City of Boerne’s liability waiver the first time he or she volunteers. \n\n\n\nContact Jeff Schwarz at jeffschwarz27@gmail.com for more info.

SUMMARY:Sam Kieschnick\, TPWD\, Flying Bird Food – Learning about Moths! North Central Chapter Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Insects are a crucial part of the diet of most birds at some time in their lives. In this program\, learn about one of the most important groups of insects for birds. Although not quite as famed as their day-flying cousins\, moths are tremendously diverse and have some magnificent patterns.  In the DFW area\, we have documented over 1200 species of moths. Learn ways you can manage your habitat to encourage moth diversity and find out some ways that you can document and identify the various species that you might see. \n\n\n\nSam Kieschnick is an urban wildlife biologist with TPWD serving the east side of the DFW metroplex.  He previously worked as a nature educator with the City of Mansfield at Oliver Nature Park\, as a naturalist at the Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge\, as a science interpreter with the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History\, as a botanist with Botanical Research Institute of Texas\, and as an instructor at Weatherford College.  He has a master’s degree from Tarleton State University studying the genetics of pocket gophers.  As an urban wildlife biologist\, Sam’s focus will be on three a’s: awareness\, appreciation\, and action.   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n6:30 Doors Open\, Socializing and Snacks7:00 Chapter Meeting and AnnouncementsThe presentation will follow our brief business meeting. \n\n\n\nLOCATIONFort Worth Botanic GardenRose Room3220 Botanic Garden Blvd\, Fort Worth\, Texas 76107 \n\n\n\nVIRTUAL ZOOM REGISTRATION This meeting is hybrid and will be held in person and on Zoom.  You can register in advance to receive the Zoom meeting link by clicking the GREEN BUTTON found at the top of the Calendar page on our website. SUMMARY:Party in the Prickly Pear – Williamson County Chapter Meeting\, June 11
DESCRIPTION:Join NPSOT-Williamson County on Thursday\, June 11\, 2026\, when our featured topic will be “Party in the Prickly Pear” with Becky Roe. Free and open to the public. The meeting begins at 7:00 PM.  The guest presentation begins after a short business meeting. \n\n\n\nAbout our topic: Prickly pear occurs throughout the state of Texas; it’s even our state plant. Have you ever really thought about this cactus? We will take a look at this family of native plants. First\, a little about cacti in general and what makes prickly pear different. What is its place in nature? How have humans used it in the past and today? This will be a fun look at a plant we see everyday. \n\n\n\nAbout our speaker: Becky Roe is a lifelong nature lover; she found her niche when she became a Master Naturalist in 2022 with the Good Water chapter. As a Master Naturalist\, her interest in plants has intensified\, especially native plants\, which led to her joining the Native Plant Society in 2023. She is a member of the Tonkawa Chapter and is an associate member of the Williamson County Chapter. Becky also volunteers at Mother Neff State Park as often as possible\, helping with school field trip days and leading guided plant hikes. She enjoys sharing with others how plants interact with all the other parts of nature\, and with how people have historically used those plants. \n\n\n\n==> This month’s in-person location is the Georgetown Public Library\, 2nd floor\, 402 West 8th St\, Georgetown\, TX 78626. Come early (6:30 PM) for expert advice\, to check out the seed swap board\, or just to visit. \n\n\n\n==> To attend via Zoom\, register at https://npsot-org.zoom.us/meeting/register/pvggnm-ASyKwDxXu7aVpAA#/registration \n\n\n\nThe original meeting announcement is here on the Williamson County Chapter’s blog page. \n\n\n\nAt every meeting\, we give away a book — about native plants or the meeting topic — to one randomly chosen in-person attendee!

SUMMARY:Member Garden Tour 3
DESCRIPTION:Ruthanne Schulte – 131 Oak View Ct \n\n\n\nCome visit a genuine Central Texas wildscape — two acres designed to support as much wildlife as possible. Native grasses\, shrubs\, and wildflowers fill the property\, and the birdwatching is exceptional. Painted buntings\, tufted titmice\, summer tanagers\, and white‑eyed vireos are regular visitors\, along with many others. \n\n\n\nA large\, naturalistic water feature provides habitat for native aquatic and riparian plants as well as a reliable water source for wildlife. Nothing here is formal or neat — the landscape is intentionally “wild\,” complete with brush piles and layered cover that wildlife depends on. \n\n\n\nThe property includes a mix of sun and shade zones\, each featuring natives that thrive in those specific conditions. Deer pressure is real in this area\, so the land is protected with a combination of electric fencing and motion‑sensor sprinklers — all of which will be turned off during the tour. \n\n\n\nIf you’ve never had the joy of seeing a painted bunting up close\, you’ll want to make a trip out here. The evening hours are set to ensure a painted bunting sighting.
