Mika is a Texas Master Naturalist and volunteers with projects such as native bee monitoring and the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center fauna survey. Mika’s photography spotlights the vital roles insects play in our ecosystems. \n\n\n\n==> This month’s in-person location is the Georgetown Public Library\, 2nd floor\, 402 West 8th St\, Georgetown\, TX 78626. Come early (6:30 PM) for expert advice\, to check out the seed swap board\, or just to visit. \n\n\n\n==> To attend via Zoom\, register at https://npsot-org.zoom.us/meeting/register/nQwYwxu1SPeUfjbQp9l5-w#/registration \n\n\n\nCan’t attend? The guest presentation will be recorded for YouTube. \n\n\n\nThe original meeting announcement is here on the Williamson County Chapter’s blog page.

SUMMARY:Ancient Dune Swales: An Ode to the Coastal HeritagePreserve - February 19
DESCRIPTION:Often overlooked\, the native plants of our Gulf Coast play a major role in habitat restoration while quite literally holding all of us along the coast together. This presentation will dive into the science behind a diverse set of plants native to the Gulf Coast and zoom in specifically on those that inhabit Galveston Island’s ancient dune swale complex. \n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker \n\n\n\nLyndsey Ware is an eighth generation Texan with deep roots sunk into the Gulf Coast mud from South Texas to New Orleans\, Ware has been talking to and falling in love with plants all her life. While on a brief hiatus away from her native habitat\, she went back to school and earned a Plant and Soil Science (w/conservation and agricultural horticultural focus) degree from the University of Massachusetts. She has worked the land from an early age\, managed greenhouses\, farms\, and labs\, conducted research as a member of the UMass Extension team\, and often acted as a liaison between growers and academia\, agriculturists and conservationists. While away\, her longing for the Texas and Louisiana ecologies she calls home grew. Upon return to the Lone Star State\, Ware managed Green Star Wetland Plant Farm where she learned more about her beloved hydrophytes that helped her dad navigate duck marshes that he dragged her to as a girl. She then became the Conservation Horticulturist at Houston Botanic Garden before landing her ‘dream job’ stewarding 1\,039 acres of wetlands and prairies\, working with a plethora of unique plants at Artist Boat’s Coastal Heritage Preserve. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur monthly chapter meetings are held on every 3rd Thursday\, January – November. Our meetings are free and open to the public thanks to our members and sponsors. \n\n\n\nThe presentation will start at 7:00 pm\, but come at 6:45 pm for a meet and greet with snacks. \n\n\n\nHouston Arboretum and Nature Center \n\n\n\n610 Entrance (preferred)120 W Loop N FwyHouston\, TX 77024 \n\n\n\nWoodway Entrance4501 Woodway DriveHouston\, TX 77024 \n\n\n\nMeetings will also be live-streamed and recorded for later viewing. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReturn to Houston Chapter Page

SUMMARY:All Seasons Field Trip: Winter\, Benbrook\, North Central Chapter
DESCRIPTION:Come explore the Benbrook Environmentally Sensitive Area with us. This 700-acre site has been designated as an Environmentally Sensitive Area (ESA) by the Army Corps of Engineers. Part of the greater Fort Worth Prairie ecoregion\, it offers views of the unspoiled grand prairie with riparian features. \n\n\n\nThere are a multitude of native prairie grasses and forbs. Seeing it in winter\, spring\, summer\, and fall provides a better understanding of the ecosystem and an appreciation for nature’s beauty. It’s great for birders year-round and for those interested in looking for monarch caterpillars (in April & May). \n\n\n\nWe will walk about two miles\, and you will need sturdy shoes and tick prevention/precautions. There will also be some rocky-ish ups and downs. Kim Conrow\, a member of NPSOT and a Texas Master Naturalist\, will lead the hike. Kim has been coming to the ESA for several years and is eager to share her knowledge of this area with us. \n\n\n\nYou do not need to be a NPSOT member to attend this event. Attendees will need to sign a liability and photo waiver. This is a FREE event! \n\n\n\nRegistration is limited to 20 people. You can sign up for one date\, or all of them! Participants who complete all 4 will receive a certificate. \n\n\n\nSign up: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0D4FA8A72AA3FAC52-milkweed \n\n\n\nWINTER: Sunday\, February 22\, 4:00pm (2-hour event)SPRING: Sunday\, May 10\, 4:00pm (2-hour event)SUMMER: Saturday\, July 18\, 7:30am (2-hour event)FALL: TBA \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLOCATION:Meeting point will be emailed to registrants.Benbrook Lake AreaBenbrook\, TX
