SUMMARY:Lake Mineral Wells State Park Pollinator Garden Work Day\, Volunteer Opportunity\, Cross Timbers Chapter\, Mineral Wells\, Saturday\, 5/18/2024 at 9 a.m.
DESCRIPTION:🌿 Calling All Native Plant Enthusiasts! 🌿  Be a Pollinator Protector! 🐝🌸 \n\n\n\nJoin us for a morning of volunteer magic at Lake Mineral Wells State Park. 🌼✨ \n\n\n\nYou can help maintain the pollinator garden at Lake Mineral Wells State Park! 🌼🦋 This wonderful community effort supports our local ecosystems and provides habitat to facilitate the important work of pollinators. It gives volunteers the opportunity to work side-by-side with experienced gardeners and learn about natives and their care and maintenance. This garden provides educational information to visitors and is utilized by the park staff to explain the importance of native plants and their benefits. \n\n\n\nHere are some suggestions on clothing and what to bring: \n\n\n\n\nWork Clothing: Wear comfortable work clothing appropriate for the weather. Layers are great for adjusting to changing conditions.\n\n\n\nGloves: If you have gardening gloves\, bring them along. They’ll protect your hands while working with plants and soil.\n\n\n\nGardening Tools: If you own any gardening tools\, such as nippers\, shovels\, spades\, pitchforks\, or wheelbarrows\, feel free to bring them. Buckets and brooms are also useful. These tools can be incredibly helpful for various tasks.\n\n\n\nWater: Stay hydrated! Bring a water bottle to keep yourself refreshed during the work.\n\n\n\nHat:  A hat with a wide brim provides shade for your face\, neck\, and ears\, protecting you from direct sunlight. It helps prevent sunburn and reduces the risk of skin damage caused by UV radiation.  In case of cooler weather\, wear a hat to keep warm.\n\n\n\n\nAdditional Details: \n\n\n\n\nIf the temperature is below 40°F or if it’s raining\, the workday will be canceled. \n\n\n\nFor any specific questions or further information\, you can reach out to Cindy Crump at cindyleecrump@gmail.com.\n\n\n\nFor these months\, here are some details of plans\n\nMay: Weed removal and admiring the blooms that will cover the garden this month!\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation: \n\n\n\n\nLake Mineral Wells State Park\, 100 Park Road 71\, Mineral Wells\, Texas.\n\n\n\nBefore entering the park gates\, take a left into the administration building parking lot.\n\n\n\n\nMeeting Point: \n\n\n\n\nMeet at the garden located near the administration building entrance (before paying at the gate).\n\n\n\n\nLet’s come together and contribute to the beauty and health of our local environment! 🌿🌸

SUMMARY:Container Gardening with Keystone Plants presented by Krista De Cooke\, Homegrown National Park - May 21
DESCRIPTION:In this presentation\, Krista De Cooke will explore container gardening as a potent strategy to combat biodiversity loss. Attendees will learn how to cultivate keystone plants tailored to their growing conditions and suitable for small spaces\, using ecoregions as a guide for plant selection. Krista will showcase plant species that will be suitable for level II ecoregions across the United States and Canada\, highlighting their potential to support native biodiversity and serve as crucial refueling stops for pollinators. She will also emphasize the concept of Keystone Plants\, species that form the backbone of local ecosystems by providing essential insect food. By incorporating these keystone plants\, attendees will be able to actively contribute to the restoration of native biodiversity and address the urgent issue of ecosystem collapse. Joining this presentation will allow participants to make a meaningful impact on biodiversity regeneration\, one container at a time. \n\n\n\nThis presentation is part of the Monarch Conservation Webinar Series by Monarch Joint Venture.

SUMMARY:Green Jobs: Exploring STEM Natural Resource Careers
DESCRIPTION:Webinar with Ted Stevens\, Education Director\, Texas Forestry Association \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLearn how to use Project Learning Tree’s new Green Jobs guide that is TEKS-aligned and STEM correlated to inspire your students to pursue a future career working outdoors in a natural resource forestry related career. The guide contains four fun hands-on activities to explore this topic with your middle school and high school students. \n\n\n\nParticipants will learn how to use the four activities that are contained within the new Green Jobs curriculum guide to inspire their middle school / high school students to explore STEM and natural resource careers. “Green” jobs — defined by the Bureau of Labor Statistics as jobs that produce goods or services that benefit the environment or conserve natural resources\, or jobs that use more environmentally friendly processes or fewer natural resources — have outpaced jobs in other categories by almost 250 percent over the last decade. According to the International Labour Organization\, there were 9.8 million “green” jobs in 2017 and by 2030\, there will be an additional 15-60 million new green jobs. Green jobs are not just in the renewable energy\, manufacturing\, or technology sectors. \n\n\n\nSome of the greenest jobs involve forests which Green Jobs: Exploring Forest Careers introduces high schoolers to the exciting array of career options in this field. These activities will be demonstrated in the webinar and participants will receive a free sample of one of the activities as a PDF download file. An overview of other Project Learning Tree’s award winning environmental education curriculum guides will also be presented. \n\n\n\nZoom link to be sent to registrants the day of the event
