DESCRIPTION:April 2\, 2026 Post Oak Chapter NPSOT meeting -Dr Alan Pepper\n\n\n\nChapter Meeting Thursday April 2nd featuring Dr Alan Pepper \n\n\n\nThursday\, April 2nd\, 6 PM Meet and Greet\, 6:30- 7:30 PM Presentation. More Details to Come! \n\n\n\nHaving grown up amongst the flora of Northern California\, Alan Pepper attained a post-doctorate in plant biology along with some graduate work in restoration ecology. Sometime afterwards\, he took a position in the TAMU biology department. His major area of research focuses on how plants adapt to extreme geological\, soil and climatic conditions. \n\n\n\nA large part of his work concerns the genetics\, ecology and conservation of rare endemic plants\, including Texas plants in the mustard family and orchids.  He has also researched the genetics and ecology of invasive species such as KR Bluestem and Giant Arundo. \n\n\n\nAlan is active in several organizations and currently serves on the steering committee of the Texas Rare Plants Conservation Alliance\, where he helps to advise restoration projects and the nursery industry on best practices for selection of genetic materials for the propagation of rare\, endangered and threatened plants.

SUMMARY:Boerne City Campus Natural Area (BCCNA) Workday
DESCRIPTION:Join us for BCCNA workdays! \n\n\n\nThe BCCNA project involves the restoration and enhancement of the Boerne City Campus Natural Area (BCCNA). The BCCNA is comprised of 13-acres on either side of the Old No. 9 Trail\, behind the library. We are working towards restoring this area to a native pollinator habitat\, creating a wildlife corridor and haven within the city. \n\n\n\nBCCNA Workdays take place on the first and third Thursdays of each month. \n\n\n\nOur meeting place will be in the Boerne Patrick Heath Public Library parking lot near the windmill. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a tour of Daphne Prairie a few miles northeast of Mt. Vernon\, Tx. B.F. Hicks\, the owner of the preserve\, will take us on a guided tour of the 922-acre property\, protected by an easement held by the Native Prairie Association of Texas and supporting an intensely significant conservation effort. See the incredible stands of bluestem grasses\, Silveus Dropseed\, the Mima mounds\, blooming rattlesnake master\, and much\, much more. This pristine prairie is one of the most biodiverse remnants of native grassland in Texas. You don’t get many opportunities to tour a property like Daphne Prairie with one of the family members who have owned the property since the 1840’s! Contact Linda Mahony to reserve your spot.

We may carpool to another location with limited parking if the group is open to it. \n\n\n\nThings To Bring: We may wander off trail- so boots/closed toe shoes and bug spray recommended.Please bring adequate hydration and other items you may require to be comfortable. I anticipate we will be in full sun part of the time\, so dress appropriately. \n\n\n\nField Trip Overview: Bear Creek Park and the Addicks Reservoir landscape offer an excellent setting to examine how large-scale flood control infrastructure\, soil conditions\, and long-term land management shape vegetation patterns in west Houston. Constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers between 1946 and 1948\, Addicks Reservoir required extensive earthen fill for its dam and outlet works while leaving much of the upstream impoundment relatively undisturbed topographically. Today\, ongoing modernization and watershed repair efforts by USACE and the Harris County Flood Control District continue to maintain reservoir safety and flood capacity\, providing important context for managing ecological resources within an active engineering system. \n\n\n\nWithin the periodically impounded areas\, the absence of grazing and prescribed fire since the 1950s has driven significant woody encroachment. Much of the equestrian trail corridor is now forested\, dominated by species such as Chinese tallow\, sugarberry\, American elm\, green ash\, and water oak. Despite heavy canopy development and invasive pressure\, these areas retain a fairly diverse understory\, allowing discussion of successional dynamics\, constraints on active management\, and the challenges of balancing flood control with habitat goals. \n\n\n\nIf the group elects to carpool\, we will also visit several prairie pockets maintained primarily by edaphic conditions rather than management. These clay-rich and locally saline barrens restrict woody growth and support highly diverse native prairie communities\, including locally adapted and endemic species. Across forested\, prairie\, wetland\, and riparian settings\, the trip will emphasize plant identification\, the role of soils and hydrology in shaping habitats\, and how adaptive management strategies can be applied within the operational realities of a high-profile flood control landscape. \n\n\n\nLeader Bio: Andy Newman is a restoration ecologist\, botanist\, and longtime advocate for Texas native plant communities based in Houston. With more than 17 years of experience working across prairies\, wetlands\, forests\, and riparian systems\, Andy brings a sciencebased yet deeply observant approach to understanding landscapes. His work is rooted in careful attention to plant communities\, ecological processes\, and the stories written into the land by water\, soils\, disturbance\, and time. Whether in the field or sharing knowledge with others\, Andy emphasizes curiosity\, observation\, and respect for the complexity of natural systems. \n\n\n\nAs Vice President of the Native Plant Society of Texas – Houston Chapter\, Andy is dedicated tostrengthening connections between people and the native landscapes of the Gulf Coast. He is an active speaker\, mentor\, and field educator\, often blending science with creativity through nature journaling\, scientific illustration\, and art. These practices shape how he observes and communicates the natural world\, helping make ecology more accessible and meaningful to diverse audiences. You can play an important role helping educate and supervising the volunteers.  \n\n\n\nVolunteer hours count towards Texas Master Naturalist and Texas Master Gardeners. \n\n\n\nAbout the Nature Trail\n\n\n\nChandor Nature Trail is just under one mile long and is open for hikers and their leashed dogs free of charge during Chandor Garden hours. DESCRIPTION:Location: Phil Hardberger Park\, 8400 NW Military Hwy\, San Antonio\, TX 78231 \n\n\n\nSPECIAL NOTE: Our presenter has so much to share we are “allowing” 2.5 hours for the full walk\, but participants are free to leave earlier. \n\n\n\nThe event’s purpose is to learn about the many special understory and canopy trees in our area. This walk will be led by Michael Nentwich\, president and founder of Bexar Branches Alliance. Michael has nearly 20 years of experience in community forestry management and program development. He was San Antonio’s first City Forester and later served as City Forester and Bureau Manager of Parks and Urban Forestry with the City of Norfolk. \n\n\n\nHe earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science and a Master’s Degree in Forestry from Stephen F. Austin University. He has extensive knowledge and a deep and abiding interest in trees as well as being a great communicator. You will be introduced to the common tree species found in the park\, and probably will get to see and learn about Eve’s Necklace\, Texas Kidneywood\, and Little-leaf Mulbery among many other fascinating species. \n\n\n\nPlease arrive about 7:45 am SHARP so we can register everyone and be ready for an 8:00 am start. You will walk an about 1.5 mile route starting and ending at the Urban Ecology Center. There will be brief explanations at the start and along the way with ample time for participant questions. \n\n\n\nMinors only when accompanied by an adult parent/guardian. Dogs allowed if leashed and socialized. DIFFICULTY: Easy\, definitely suitable for families. Flat terrain\, slow-paced. \n\n\n\nThe trail is a natural surface so be sure to wear sturdy shoes and\, dependent on the weather\, bring water\, sun protection\, and dress appropriately for the day and season. Suggested $3 individual or $5 family donations to the PHP Conservancy to support enhancements to the park. \n\n\n\nThis event’s general sponsors are the Phil Hardberger Park Conservancy\, the San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department’s Natural Areas Office\, the Alamo Area Master Naturalists\, and the Alamo Group of the Sierra Club.
