DESCRIPTION:Habitat volunteers help weed and mulch flower beds\, plant native plants\, maintain pathways\, and trim trees and bushes. Volunteers may also help clean out the pond on select work days. \n\n\n\n\nNo experience necessary—we’ll show you what goes and what stays\n\n\n\nBring your own tools or use ours (we have gloves too)\n\n\n\nDon’t forget to bring a reusable water bottle\, hat\, and sunscreen!\n\n\n\n\nVolunteers must be 18 or older to participate in EIH’s workdays unless prior arrangements have been made. \n\n\n\nWe do not hold workdays when the university is officially closed. Also\, workdays are canceled during inclement weather\, though a light sprinkle or drizzle rarely keeps us out of the garden. DESCRIPTION:🌿 Calling All Native Plant Enthusiasts! 🌿  Be a Pollinator Protector! 🐝🌸 \n\n\n\nJoin us for a morning of volunteer magic at Lake Mineral Wells State Park. 🌼✨ \n\n\n\nYou can help maintain the pollinator garden at Lake Mineral Wells State Park! 🌼🦋 This wonderful community effort supports our local ecosystems and provides habitat to facilitate the important work of pollinators.  It gives volunteers the opportunity to work side-by-side with experienced gardeners and learn about natives and their care and maintenance. This garden provides educational information to visitors and is utilized by the park staff to explain the importance of native plants and their benefits. \n\n\n\nHere are some suggestions on clothing and what to bring: \n\n\n\n\nWork Clothing: Wear comfortable work clothing appropriate for the weather. Layers are great for adjusting to changing conditions.\n\n\n\nGloves: If you have gardening gloves\, bring them along. They’ll protect your hands while working with plants and soil.\n\n\n\nGardening Tools: If you own any gardening tools\, such as nippers\, shovels\, spades\, pitchforks\, or wheelbarrows\, feel free to bring them.  Buckets and brooms are also useful. These tools can be incredibly helpful for various tasks.\n\n\n\nWater: Stay hydrated! Bring a water bottle to keep yourself refreshed during the work.\n\n\n\nHat:  A hat with a wide brim provides shade for your face\, neck\, and ears\, protecting you from direct sunlight. DESCRIPTION:We’ve been asked\, “Why are we messing with insects?” If you’ve ever wondered that too\, this program will explain how the Bring Back the Monarchs to Texas committee of NPSOT benefits not just Monarch Butterflies but also a host of other creatures\, native plants\, and NPSOT itself. We’ll showcase some of our favorite success stories\, and explain how you too can get involved on lots of levels. \n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker – Carol Clark\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCarol Clark is a longtime member of the Native Plant Society of Texas\, a Texas Master Naturalist\, and a Monarch Watch Conservations Specialist. She chairs the Bring Back the Monarchs to Texas committee for NPSOT. She and her husband have a 36 acre Monarch Waystation and wildlife refuge in Cooke County where the emphasis is on birds\, insects\, and of course\, native plants. \n\n\n\n\n\nOur monthly chapter meetings are held on every 3rd Thursday\, January – November. This three-acre site in Bellaire has inside and outside components and we will be welcome to both. \n\n\n\nIn addition\, we are offering to include a walk over and around the Kinder Land Bridge and Prairie Project at Memorial Park. The land bridge is a gentle climbable incline. If no incline is desired\, the immediate area before the bridge is also noteworthy prairie plants. \n\n\n\nBoth of these adventures will also allow us to stop for a quick bite\, so no one suffers from hunger\, and it is fun to break bread together anyway. We intend to be on the way home before rush hour. \n\n\n\nWe hope to carpool\, leaving from UHCL parking lot in as many cars as needed. DESCRIPTION:Habitat volunteers help weed and mulch flower beds\, plant native plants\, maintain pathways\, and trim trees and bushes. Volunteers may also help clean out the pond on select work days. \n\n\n\n\nNo experience necessary—we’ll show you what goes and what stays\n\n\n\nBring your own tools or use ours (we have gloves too)\n\n\n\nDon’t forget to bring a reusable water bottle\, hat\, and sunscreen!\n\n\n\n\nVolunteers must be 18 or older to participate in EIH’s workdays unless prior arrangements have been made. \n\n\n\nWe do not hold workdays when the university is officially closed. Also\, workdays are canceled during inclement weather\, though a light sprinkle or drizzle rarely keeps us out of the garden. You will hear from projects at three sites: FJH Outdoor Classroom at Friendswood Junior High School\, Pollinator Habitat in the Discovery Garden at Carbide Park\, and Cornelius Re-Spark Park at Cornelius Elementary School. Grantees will highlight their successes\, obstacles\, and lessons learned. \n\n\n\nAbout the Sites\n\n\n\nCornelius Re-Spark Park at Cornelius Elementary School (Houston ISD): Cornelius was one of the first five schools in Houston to receive a SPARK Park back 1983 and has benefited from a few re-SPARK efforts. This initiative by the Cornelius PTO is creating a native pollinator garden at JP Cornelius Elementary\, enriching the learning environment for students while supporting local wildlife. \n\n\n\nOutdoor Classroom at Friendswood Junior High (Friendswood ISD): Friendswood Junior High’s project aimed to create an engaging and educational native pollinator garden\, fostering a connection between students and the environment. \n\n\n\nPollinator Habitat in the Discovery Garden (Carbide Park): The project led by the Galveston County Master Gardeners at Carbide Park is centered on enhancing a pollinator habitat within the Discovery Garden. DESCRIPTION:Join NPSOT-Williamson County on Thursday\, May 9\, 2024\, when our featured topic will be “Archeology in Texas Botanical Gardens / Ethnobotany in Texas Botanical Gardens” with Susan Reynolds\, ED\, Texas Botanical Gardens & Native American Interpretive Center.   \n\n\n\nFree and open to the public. The meeting begins at 7:00 PM.  Our guest speaker’s presentation begins after a short business meeting. \n\n\n\nAbout our topic: There will be two separate\, but short presentations.1. Archeology – Topics covered will include Texas prehistoric peoples\, the Texas Archeological Society\, artifacts in the gardens\, active sites in Mills County.2. Ethnobotany – Definition\, role in the creation of the Texas Botanical Gardens\, interesting plants growing there. \n\n\n\nAbout our speaker: Susan Reynolds retired from a 30 year career as an award winning band director in California and Texas in 2022. She has always loved plants\, gardening\, and digging things up from the side of the road and now serves her community as the Executive Director of the Texas Botanical Gardens and Native American Interpretive Center (TBG) in Goldthwaite\, TX. She is the organizer\, grant writer\, fundraiser\, and “general flunkie” for the Board of Directors. On March 28\, 2024\, Susan spearheaded the Grand Opening of the new Demonstration Gardens at the TBG’s office\, a ground up\, grassroots project that netted nearly $52\,000 in grants and just over $18\,000 in gifts. \n\n\n\nNOTE: this month’s in-person location is the Georgetown Public Library\, 2nd floor\, 402 West 8th St\, Georgetown\, TX 78626. \n\n\n\nThe original meeting announcement is here on the Williamson County Chapter’s blog page.
