SUMMARY:Chapter Leader Forum: How San Antonio Developed a Native Landscape Services Directory
DESCRIPTION:Description: Join Joan Miller who will tell you about the development of the NLCP Services Directory and Bulletin Board. As we know\, interest in native landscaping is rapidly growing\, creating a need for individuals who are knowledgeable in the field. The Native Landscape Certification Program (NLCP) was developed to fulfill that need. Taking the concept further\, the San Antonio chapter has created a directory of individuals who have completed NLCP classes and are offering their services and expertise to the public. This directory was created as a reference to the public in order to help find individuals who can help them in native landscaping of their yards and businesses and is targeted to those living in the San Antonio area. \n\n\n\nDiscussion topics: Share ideas of how chapters can develop listings of local landscapers who can provide services in native landscaping. \n\n\n\nPresenter: Joan Miller\, San Antonio Chapter and NLCP Chapter Coordinator \n\n\n\nWhen: October 17\, 2024 (Third Thursday) 12 – 1 pm \n\n\n\nZoom Registration Link: \n\n\n\nhttps://npsot-org.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMkf-uurz0sHNW1chmdgZMMfg_GCadxsUzA

SUMMARY:Field Trip: Lawther-Deer Park Prairie
DESCRIPTION:Meeting Location: Registration is required and limited space is available. The location will be sent to registered participants only. Email Della_Barbato@TexasPrairie.org to register.  She will e-mail you a liability waiver and important parking instructions. \n\n\n\nThings To Bring: We will wander off trail\, so boots/closed toe shoes and bug spray recommended. Thereare some wetlands\, and since your leader is a wetland ecologist he likely is going to want to get wet tosee fun species such as powdery thalia (Thalia dealbata). Follow at your own risk (you should do it – whynot?). Please bring adequate hydration and other items you may require to be comfortable. We will be infull sun the entire time\, so dress appropriately. \n\n\n\nField Trip Overview: Please at some point\, find out the conservation story of this 51 acre property\, itspeaks accolades of many people and groups who came together to preserve a jewel of the habitat typethat used to dominate the Greater Houston Area. This is called a “platinum prairie” with over 400 plantspecies identified. In depth information provided by Singhurst et al. in The Vascular Flora and PlantCommunities of Lawther-Deer Park Prairie\, Harris County\, Texas\, USA (link below). As Singhurst et al.points out there are six distinctive vegetation communities present within the area. Plant speciesrepresentation include Grasses (84 species)\, Sunflowers (68 species)\, Sedges (33 species) andLegumes (19 species). Since your leader is a grass and sedge nerd- we will focus on finding someuncommon species to the area such as slender bluestem (Schizachyrium tenerum)\, Pineywoodsdropseed (Sporobolus junceus)\, purple silkyscale (Anthenantia rufa)\, Texas windmill grass (Chloristexensis)\, and Georgia nutrush (Scleria georgiana- one of leader’s favorites\, has cool iridescent pits onachene [seed]). It may be a week or two early\, but we may find nodding ladies tresses (Spiranthescernua). From a conservation perspective\, we will discuss how these areas are key to preserving diversity and genetics and can be utilized to promote future restoration efforts. Additionally\, we may also discuss management limitations of areas like this (e.g. difficulty burning/grazing\, invasive pathways\, woody encroachment\, etc.). \n\n\n\nSinghurst et al Paper: https://texasprairie.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Flora-and-plant-coummunities-of-Deer-Park-Prairie.pdf \n\n\n\nAdditional Site Information: https://texasprairie.org/deerpark/ \n\n\n\nLeader Bio: Andy Newman is the Chief Ecologist at The Earth Partners and has 15 years’ experienceworking within diverse ecosystems for a wide array of project types. His position places an emphasisleading the technical ecological restoration of projects\, managing construction and adaptive management\, and helping clients meet their compensatory mitigation requirements. His background includes environmental restoration planning\, stakeholder engagement\, construction\, planting\, and ecological uplift assessment. Andy’s specialties include aquatic feature delineations and jurisdictional determinations\, Clean Water Act permitting\, threatened and endangered species identification and consultations\, NEPA compliance\, plant identification\, and community classification. His favorite ecosystems include longleaf pine savannas\, coastal prairies\, and southern Appalachian forests. \n\n\n\nAdditional Coordination Details: Please contact Bob Romero for any further coordination details atbobromero@gmail.com or by phone at (713) 248-6030. \n\n\n\nPhoto Credit: Suzanne Simpson

SUMMARY:Building a Future With Flowers: Lewisville’s Sustainable Solution - Williamson County Chapter Meeting\, October 10
DESCRIPTION:Join NPSOT-Williamson County on Thursday\, October 10\, 2024\, when our featured topic will be “Building a Future With Flowers: Lewisville’s Sustainable Solution” with TJ Gilmore\, mayor of Lewisville\, Texas.  Our guest speaker will be joining us via Zoom from Lewisville.  \n\n\n\nThe meeting begins at 7:00 PM.  TJ’s presentation will begin after a short business meeting. The meeting is free and open to the public. \n\n\n\nAbout our topic: Want to know how to navigate getting your city leadership to invest in natives\, avoid common political pitfalls\, and identify several programs that can be replicated in your community? TJ Gilmore\, mayor of Lewisville\, Texas\, will be providing all of that and more in his presentation. \n\n\n\nAbout our speaker: Mayor TJ Gilmore is an Arizona native who’s been a Texas transplant since 2001. His service to the community stretches back to working on boards and commissions in 2004 until he was elected to city council in 2011 and became mayor in 2021. He’s married to his college sweetheart\, has three recent college graduate children and can’t pass up watching a good Star Trek episode. TJ is always looking out for ways to leave the community better than he found it and loves how plants bring people together — even though he has a black thumb. \n\n\n\nNOTE: this month’s in-person location is the Georgetown Public Library\, 2nd Floor\, 402 W 8th St\, Georgetown\, Texas 78626.  Come early (6:30 PM) for expert advice\, to check out the seed swap board\, or just to visit. \n\n\n\nThe link to register for Zoom is below. \n\n\n\nThe original meeting announcement is here on the Williamson County Chapter’s blog page.
