Social time 5:30 p.m.\, business meeting 5:40 p.m.\, Plant-of-the-Month 5:50 p.m.\, hour-long program 6:20 p.m.  All presentations are available via Zoom and are recorded for our Youtube channel. \n\n\n\nBiography \n\n\n\nDebbie Kyrouac began her interest in plant ecology and plant taxonomy during her graduate work at Texas Tech Univ.  She and her family moved to San Antonio in 2009 where she took a job teaching Biology at Northeast Lakeview College and renewed her interest in local plants.  More recently\, she has expanded her interest in native plants of Texas through both NPSOT and the Texas Master Naturalists.  Debbie is currently participating in numerous plant and butterfly survey projects at the Bracken Preserve\, Guadalupe River State Park\, the Heritage Museum garden and Madrone Trail pollinator garden.  She also enjoys hours spent developing a native plant habitat on her own property.

SUMMARY:Boerne City Campus Natural Area (BCCNA) Workday
DESCRIPTION:Join us for BCCNA workdays!   \n\n\n\nThe BCCNA project involves the restoration and enhancement of the Boerne City Campus Natural Area (BCCNA). The BCCNA is comprised of 13-acres on either side of the Old No. 9 Trail\, behind the library. We are working towards restoring this area to a native pollinator habitat\, creating a wildlife corridor and haven within the city. \n\n\n\nBCCNA Workdays take place on the first and third Thursdays of each month in 2025.  \n\n\n\nOur meeting place will be in the Boerne Patrick Heath Public Library parking lot near the windmill. If you don’t see us at the windmill\, walk out behind the library across the creek as we’ve likely already started!  \n\n\n\nEach volunteer will be required to fill out the City of Boerne’s liability waiver the first time he or she volunteers in 2025. \n\n\n\nContact Jeff Schwarz at jeffschwarz27@gmail.com for more info.

SUMMARY:Native Plants in Houston: Building a Local Supply Chain for a Growing Market - March 20
DESCRIPTION:Matt Stahman will discuss the state of local native plant supplies\, the markets for those supplies\, and the need and formation of a supply chain for future markets for native plants and native plant materials. \n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker \n\n\n\nMatt serves as a Regulatory Director for Resource Environmental Solutions (RES) where he specializes in wetlands and endangered species related ecological restoration projects\, especially those associated with mitigation\, and is a registered Professional Wetland Scientist and past president of the Society of Wetland Scientists South Central Chapter (Texas\, Oklahoma\, Arkansas\, Louisiana\, Mississippi\, Alabama) as well as a Certified Ecological Restoration Practitioner through the Society for Ecological Restoration. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThroughout his career\, he has worked on the design\, permitting\, project management\, construction\, and monitoring of multiple ecological restoration projects\, including wetland mitigation banks and consolidated mitigation areas. He has 30 years of experience in Clean Water Act permitting and mitigation\, Endangered Species Act consultations\, National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) environmental impact assessments\, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) filings\, and obtaining various other federal\, state\, and local environmental permits. Matt has worked throughout the United States\, providing environmental compliance consulting for various industries including oil and gas\, public transportation\, telecommunications\, electric utility\, coal mining\, and land development. In his spare time\, he works evenings and weekends for his mom\, who started Stahman Native Plants in 2024\, to develop supplies for native plant hay and other materials for the Houston area. \n\n\n\nOur monthly chapter meetings are held on every 3rd Thursday\, January – November. DESCRIPTION:Location: The Urban Ecology Center at Phil Hardberger Park\, 8400 NW Military Hwy\, San Antonio\, TX 78231 \n\n\n\nSPECIAL NOTE: Our presenter has so much to share we are “allowing” 2.5 hours for the full walk\, but participants are free to leave earlier. \n\n\n\nThe event’s purpose is to learn about the many special understory and canopy trees in our area. This walk will be led by Michael Nentwich of Bexar Branches Alliance. Michael has more than 15 years of experience in community forestry management and program development. He was San Antonio’s first City Forester and later served as City Forester and Bureau Manager of Parks and Urban Forestry with the City of Norfolk. \n\n\n\nHe earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science and a Master’s Degree in Forestry from Stephen F. Austin University. He has extensive knowledge and a deep and abiding interest in trees as well as being a great communicator. You will be introduced to the common tree species found in the park\, and probably will get to see and learn about Eve’s Necklace\, Texas Kidneywood\, and Little-leaf Mulbery among many other fascinating species. \n\n\n\nPlease arrive about 7:45 am SHARP so we can register everyone and be ready for an 8:00 am start. You will walk an about 1.5 mile route starting and ending at the Urban Ecology Center. There will be brief explanations at the start and along the way with ample time for participant questions. \n\n\n\nMinors only when accompanied by an adult parent/guardian. Dogs allowed if leashed and socialized. DIFFICULTY: Easy\, definitely suitable for families. Flat terrain\, slow-paced. \n\n\n\nThe trail is a natural surface so be sure to wear sturdy shoes and\, dependent on the weather\, bring water\, sun protection\, and dress appropriately for the day and season. Suggested $3 individual or $5 family donations to the PHP Conservancy to support enhancements to the park. \n\n\n\nThis event’s general sponsors are the Phil Hardberger Park Conservancy\, the San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department’s Natural Areas Office\, the Alamo Area Master Naturalists\, and the Alamo Group of the Sierra Club. DESCRIPTION:Prairie Rose will be participating in Feather Fest with the popular Seed Ball Making event for Kids of all ages. DESCRIPTION:Join us for our monthly chapter meeting at the Somervell County Citizens Center\, 209 SW Barnard Street in Glen Rose. The meetings are free and open to visitors. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBY DR. BILLY TEELS \n\n\n\nDr. Teels will be structuring his presentation around his struggle with his homeowner’s association on creating a more natural yard.  If you are in an HOA you know the importance of working with and around their rules and/or changing some rules.  For many people it can be a battle.   \n\n\n\nDr. Teels is extremely plant-knowledgeable and this presentation will be beneficial whether you not you’re in an HOA as he is discussing how we can help different types of wildlife in our yards. \n\n\n\nDr. Teels served for over 30 years as a biologist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture\, Natural Resources Conservation Service in Mississippi\, Oklahoma\, Maryland and Washington\, D.C.  He received his Ph.D. in wildlife ecology from Mississippi State University in 1975.  He currently lives in Granbury\, Texas and has been a member of the Rio Brazos Master Naturalists since 2007.

DESCRIPTION:Habitat volunteers help weed and mulch flower beds\, plant native plants\, maintain pathways\, and trim trees and bushes. Volunteers may also help clean out the pond on select work days. \n\n\n\n\nNo experience necessary—we’ll show you what goes and what stays\n\n\n\nBring your own tools or use ours (we have gloves too)\n\n\n\nDon’t forget to bring a reusable water bottle\, hat\, and sunscreen!\n\n\n\n\nVolunteers must be 18 or older to participate in EIH’s workdays unless prior arrangements have been made. \n\n\n\nWe do not hold workdays when the university is officially closed. Also\, workdays are canceled during inclement weather\, though a light sprinkle or drizzle rarely keeps us out of the garden. DESCRIPTION:The Cross Timbers Chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas invites you to join us for a presentation by Jessie Woodall\, NPSOT member and director of Bat World Cross Timbers! Jessie will introduce us to the world of Texas bats and how Texas native plants can help with the survival of our native bats. \n\n\n\nBat World Cross Timbers\, an official Bat World Sanctuary Rescue Center\, opened in 2024. They are a non-profit volunteer organization. Over the last 8 years as a subpermittee Jessie has helped raccoons\, squirrels\, and opossums. When her boys found an Eastern Red mama with three pups in their backyard six years ago\, she discovered a tremendous need for protecting our native bats. Jessie worked diligently with Kate from Bat World MidCities and received her permit in 2021 specializing in bats. Peter will introduce iNat\, exploring its powerful features\, global reach\, and local significance\, including insights from Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) data. Jane will share how you can contribute during CNC weekend (April 25–28) by documenting native plants and entire ecosystems\, forming teams\, and leading nature walks. Looking ahead to 2025\, get involved in hands-on events\, ID parties\, and training sessions to sharpen your skills and help San Antonio stand out in the CNC! \n\n\n\nJane Weeden – Co-Coordinator of the City Nature Challenge (CNC) for the San Antonio Metro Area (2024-2025) and an iNaturalist staff member (Accounting Associate) since 2024. Jane is most known for her passion about promoting the iNaturalist mission. \n\n\n\nPeter Joseph Hernandez – A seasoned iNaturalist user since 2015 and CNC Co-Coordinator since 2020. Peter is a member of the Alamo Area Master Naturalists and Guadalupe County Master Gardeners. A retired Senior Director in the telecommunications industry (2015)\, he has since dedicated himself to understanding nature and advocating for biodiversity through citizen science and iNaturalist. \n\n\n\nBoth presenters are avid photographers who continually refine their skills to document the biodiversity around us. Together\, their coordination and leadership efforts in 2024 led the San Antonio Metro Area to become national champions in the City Nature Challenge and achieve 3rd place globally. \n\n\n\nIf you are attending in person\, there is no need to register. DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, March 29 \n\n\n\n\n8:15 a.m. – Meet at the Environmental Institute of Houston for carpooling\n\n\n\n9:00 a.m. – Arrive at the EcoCenter; tour until 11:00 a.m.\n\n\n\n11:00 a.m. – Depart for Turtle Bayou parking lot\n\n\n\n11:30 a.m. – Arrive at Turtle Bayou; tour prairie area for 1–2 hours\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nJoin us on Saturday\, March 29\, for a guided tour of the GBF EcoCenter with Carter Clay. Located northeast of Baytown\, this site has long been a hub for plant propagation and potting and is now expanding its efforts to include marsh restoration. \n\n\n\nCarter will lead a two-hour in-depth tour of the EcoCenter. Additionally\, he is offering to host a visit to the Galveston Bay Foundation’s Turtle Bayou property\, a lesser-known corridor rich in wildflowers. He describes the area as providing a unique perspective on the area’s prairie\, with a nearby exposed midden where indigenous hand tools have been discovered as recently as six months ago. This optional\, but highly recommended tour\, includes an additional 25-minute drive\, a 1/3-mile walk\, and a guided visit lasting 1–2 hours\, depending on the group’s interest. \n\n\n\nLunch will not be provided\, nor will it be easy to obtain. Bring your own lunch and water. SUMMARY:Field Trip: Warren Ranch Saline Barrens
DESCRIPTION:OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\n\n\n\nMeeting Location: Meet approximately 0.5 miles south of Matt Cook Memorial Wildlife Viewing Platform on Warren Ranch Road in northwestern Harris County. The gate for this location is north of the intersection of Warren Ranch Road and Jack Road. GPS coordinates are: 29.96934\, -95.84305 \n\n\n\nThings To Bring: Closed toe shoes and bug spray are recommended. Please bring adequate hydration and other items you may require to be comfortable. It is anticipated that we will be in full sun the entire time\, so dress appropriately. \n\n\n\nField Trip Overview: This field trip will be focused on seeing rare species endemic to saline barrens that occur on the Texas coastal prairie. Jason Singhurst (Texas Parks and Wildlife Department biologist) described these habitats as the pyramid dropseed (Sporobolus pyramidatus)\, bristle-seed sand-spurrey (Spergularia echinosperma)\, narrowleaf marsh elder (Iva angustifolia)\, and Texas prairie dawn (Hymenoxys texana) herbaceous vegetation community of the Houston Saline Prairie. There are several other unique species that we may find including Texas windmill grass (Chloris texensis) and Texas Willkommia (Willkommia texana).
