SUMMARY:Collin County July Meeting: Native Swagger - Turning Heads with Texas Plants
DESCRIPTION:Our Tuesday July 7th chapter meeting will be available to attend in person at the Heard Museum in McKinney or online via Zoom. The program will feature Andrea Delong-Amaya speaking on “Native Swagger – Turning Heads with Texas Plants”. \n\n\n\nPresentation Summary:\n\n\n\nD75\n\n\n\nNative plants are ecological powerhouses\, and they represent the botanical heritage of all Texans. But too often\, they’re dismissed as messy or weedy. It’s time to change the narrative! In this talk\, we’ll explore how to use Texas natives to create gardens that are true people-pleasers. From wild to formal designs\, lawns to containers\, sun to shade\, wildlife gardens to water gardens\, even edible gardens — you’ll see how natives provide habitat while they also serve as the anchor for stunning landscapes. Whether you’re already a native-plant champion or just native-curious\, you’ll come away with ideas to elevate your garden and give native plants the starring role they deserve. \n\n\n\nAttendance Options\n\n\n\nOur meetings are free and open to the public. This is a hybrid meeting\, held at the Heard Museum in McKinney and virtually via Zoom. \n\n\n\n\nLocation (in-person): Laughlin Hall at the Heard Museum. Please enter through the south doors of the building.\n\n\n\nZoom Link: https://tinyurl.com/yn85nbzd – Passcode: 571904; Meeting ID: 885 5459 6572\n\n\n\nDoors and Zoom Open: 6:30 PM (for setup and connection testing)\n\n\n\nMeeting Begins: 7:00 PM\, with an update from Chapter President Rodney Thomas\, followed by the featured presentation.\n\n\n\nSpecial Program Note: Per our speaker’s request\, this session will not be recorded or shared on our YouTube channel.\n\n\n\n\nWe look forward to seeing you at our program. \n\n\n\nAbout our Speaker\n\n\n\nFor over three decades\, Andrea DeLong-Amaya has been living her life’s mission to honor the natural world through presenting and teaching classes about the horticulture\, ecology\, and importance of native plants in planned landscapes. \n\n\n\nOver the prior 21 years\, she served as the Wildflower Center’s Director of Horticulture\, overseeing the nine acres of Texas native plant gardens\, and nursery programs. She’s been a staff member since 1998 and has over 30 years of experience with Texas native plants in horticulture\, ecology and garden design. Recently\, she has taken on a new role at the Wildflower Center focusing more on teaching and advancing interpretation in the gardens. \n\n\n\nShe has contributed numerous gardening articles to publications such as Taunton’s Fine Gardening\, Rodale’s Organic Gardening\, American Public Gardens Association’s Public Garden\, Neil Sperry’s Gardens and e-Gardens\, Texas Gardener and Wildflower (the Center’s member magazine). Her regionally best-selling book\, the Texas Native Plant Primer  (Timber Press)\, was released in March of 2025. \n\n\n\nThe Scott Arboretum of Swarthmore College honored DeLong-Amaya with the prestigious 2025 Scott Garden & Horticulture Award in March 2025. And in the fall of 2025\, the Native Plant Society of Texas recognized her for the Texas Native Plant Primer with the Correll Memorial Award.

SUMMARY:Boerne City Campus Natural Area (BCCNA) Workday
DESCRIPTION:Join us for BCCNA workdays! \n\n\n\nThe BCCNA project involves the restoration and enhancement of the Boerne City Campus Natural Area (BCCNA). The BCCNA is comprised of 13-acres on either side of the Old No. 9 Trail\, behind the library. We are working towards restoring this area to a native pollinator habitat\, creating a wildlife corridor and haven within the city. \n\n\n\nBCCNA Workdays take place on the first and third Thursdays of each month. \n\n\n\nOur meeting place will be in the Boerne Patrick Heath Public Library parking lot near the windmill. If you don’t see us at the windmill\, walk out behind the library across the creek as we’ve likely already started!  \n\n\n\nEach volunteer will be required to fill out the City of Boerne’s liability waiver the first time he or she volunteers. \n\n\n\nContact Jeff Schwarz at jeffschwarz27@gmail.com for more info.

SUMMARY:All Seasons Field Trip: Summer\, Benbrook\, North Central Chapter
DESCRIPTION:Come explore the Benbrook Environmentally Sensitive Area with us. This 700-acre site has been designated as an Environmentally Sensitive Area (ESA) by the Army Corps of Engineers. Part of the greater Fort Worth Prairie ecoregion\, it offers views of the unspoiled grand prairie with riparian features. \n\n\n\nThere are a multitude of native prairie grasses and forbs. Seeing it in winter\, spring\, summer\, and fall provides a better understanding of the ecosystem and an appreciation for nature’s beauty. It’s great for birders year-round and for those interested in looking for monarch caterpillars (in April & May). \n\n\n\nWe will walk about two miles\, and you will need sturdy shoes and tick prevention/precautions. There will also be some rocky-ish ups and downs. Kim Conrow\, a member of NPSOT and a Texas Master Naturalist\, will lead the hike. Kim has been coming to the ESA for several years and is eager to share her knowledge of this area with us. \n\n\n\nYou do not need to be a NPSOT member to attend this event. Attendees will need to sign a liability and photo waiver. This is a FREE event! \n\n\n\nRegistration is limited to 20 people. You can sign up for one date\, or all of them! Participants who complete all 4 will receive a certificate. \n\n\n\nSign up: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0D4FA8A72AA3FAC52-milkweed \n\n\n\nSUMMER: Saturday\, July 18\, 7:30am (2-hour event)FALL: TBA \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLOCATION:Meeting point will be emailed to registrants.Benbrook Lake AreaBenbrook\, TX

DESCRIPTION:🌿 Calling All Native Plant Enthusiasts! 🌿  Be a Pollinator Protector! 🐝🌸 \n\n\n\nJoin us for a morning of volunteer magic at Lake Mineral Wells State Park. 🌼✨ \n\n\n\nYou can help maintain the pollinator garden at Lake Mineral Wells State Park! 🌼🦋 This wonderful community effort supports our local ecosystems and provides habitat to facilitate the important work of pollinators. This garden provides educational information to visitors and is utilized by the park staff to explain the importance of native plants and their benefits. \n\n\n\nHere are some suggestions on clothing and what to bring: \n\n\n\n\nWork Clothing: Wear comfortable work clothing appropriate for the weather. Layers are great for adjusting to changing conditions.\n\n\n\nGloves: If you have gardening gloves\, bring them along. They’ll protect your hands while working with plants and soil.\n\n\n\nGardening Tools: If you own any gardening tools\, such as nippers\, shovels\, spades\, pitchforks\, or wheelbarrows\, feel free to bring them. Buckets and brooms are also useful. These tools can be incredibly helpful for various tasks.\n\n\n\nWater: Stay hydrated! Bring a water bottle to keep yourself refreshed during the work.\n\n\n\nHat:  A hat with a wide brim provides shade for your face\, neck\, and ears\, protecting you from direct sunlight.
