SUMMARY:November 5\, 2024 - Chapter Meeting at Hunke Gathering Hall at Herff Farm
DESCRIPTION:Boerne Chapter Meeting at Hunke Gathering Hall at Herff Farm \n\n\n\n6:00pm Social Time\, 6:45 pm – 8:15 pm Chapter Announcements followed by presentation \n\n\n\nSpeakers – Rufus Stephens and Jan Wrede \n\n\n\nRufus is a Certified Wildlife Biologist and educator. He has worked as a wildlife biologist for 35 years\, 23 years with TPWD. Rufus is one of the founders of the Texas Master Naturalist program and in recognition for this accomplishment was a corecipient of the Wildlife Management Institute’s award for Innovation. \n\n\n\nJan is a non-fiction writer and environmental educator. She worked for 19 years as the director of education and citizen science at the Cibolo Nature Center and wrote weekly nature columns for the local newspapers. She also was a secondary science teacher for 15 years. \n\n\n\nRufus and Jan are co-authors of the new edition of Land Stewardship for Birds: A Guide for Central Texas\, published by Texas A&M Press. In addition\, Jan is author of Trees\, Shrubs\, and Vines of the Texas Hill Country. \n\n\n\nTopic: Land Stewardship for Birds – Part II  Jan and Rufus will be discussing areas within the Texas Hill Country with sparse undergrowth and/or lack of plant diversity\, and what can be done to make the land more attractive and supportive for birds. In some cases\, sparse undergrowth may be attributed to overmowing\, overgrazing\, and clearing methods that do not retain or incorporate ground cover. A lack of plant diversity can be described as a portion of a natural environment that has become too dominant\, which can lead to an imbalance in watersheds\, erosion\, and reduction of shelter for animals.

SUMMARY:Keeping it Local: Integrating Native Plants in Your Landscape - Hybrid Clear Lake Chapter Meeting
DESCRIPTION:This meeting was originally scheduled for July but canceled due to Hurricane Beryl. If you registered in July\, your registration is good for November. \n\n\n\nPlease join us for our chapter meeting in person or online! \n\n\n\n6:15 Doors Opens – UHCL Bayou Building\, Forest Room6:40 Zoom Opens6:45 Business Meeting6:55 Plant of the Month7:00 Guest Speaker \n\n\n\nWhat’s all the hype about native plants? Through photos and stories\, native Texan Cherie Colburn demonstrates her gardening mantra of “first\, do no harm” by showing how attention to where\, why\, and what’s in our gardens can make us better stewards of our world. \n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker\n\n\n\nA professional landscape designer and native Texan\, Cherie has designed hundreds of low-maintenance commercial and residential landscape designs since 1994 through her company\, Nature’s Tapestry. She’s also helped create schoolyard gardens and habitats throughout Texas. As a garden writer\, she’s authored traditionally published books for both children and adults while also contributing more than 100 magazine and newspaper articles over the last four decades. Cherie’s gardening blog – Garden Dishes – was named by PBS’ Central Texas Gardener as a favorite. \n\n\n\nIn her spare time\, you can find Cherie singing and gardening – often simultaneously – at her home or church in The Woodlands where she feels confident she’s proven the theory that singing to plants makes them grow faster. Or\, maybe that it only works on native plants and noxious weeds! \n\n\n\nIn-person – Parking Pass Required\n\n\n\nNew YELLOW parking passes are needed. If you have a pass\, don’t forget it – you will not get another one if you picked one up previously. If you need a pass\, arrive early enough to pick one up from a volunteer or in the meeting room and place it in your car. DO NOT park in faculty/staff parking (enforced 24/7). \n\n\n\nArrive early to socialize and enter your name in the drawing for the door prize. \n\n\n\nMap and Directions – The meeting will be held in Bayou Building Forest Room at UHCL. \n\n\n\nUniversity of Houston-Clear Lake2700 Bay Area Blvd.Houston\, TX 77058 \n\n\n\nOnline – Zoom\n\n\n\nRegister in advance for this meeting. SUMMARY:Chapter Meeting - Landscaping for Biodiversity - Lonnie Childs
DESCRIPTION:Landscaping for BiodiversityNative Plants\, Healthy Habitats\, & Saving Your Patch of Texas \n\n\n\nWe receive daily reminders of the escalating impacts of climate change\, but the increasing loss of habitats and biodiversity deserve equal attention as indicators of our declining natural world. He is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin. \n\n\n\n\nIn the ensuing years\, he has been involved with multiple non-profit organizations including: \n\n\n\n\nPast President of the Fredericksburg chapter of Native Plant Society of Texas\n\n\n\nPast State President of the Native Plant Society of Texas in 2012-2013.\n\n\n\nIn 2017\, he was awarded the Benny Simpson Fellows Award for service to the society.\n\n\n\nHe currently serves as President and Newsletter Editor of the Friends of the Fredericksburg Nature Center.\n\n\n\nSpeaks and writes on naturalist topics\n\n\n\n\nJoin us at Riverside Nature Center\, 150 Francisco Lemos St. Social time begins at 1 pm followed by the chapter business meeting at 1:30.
