SUMMARY:Chapter Leader Forum: Planning for Texas Wildflower Day 2025
DESCRIPTION:Title: Planning for Texas Wildflower Day 2025 \n\n\n\nDescription:Join November’s Chapter Leader Forum with Camelia Maier\, Ph.D.\, and Tom Kirwan\, Trinity Forks Chapter members\, to discuss plans for Texas Wildflower Day 2025. \n\n\n\nTexas Wildflower Day will take place next year on Friday\, April 25\, 2025\, at Texas Woman’s University (TWU) Denton campus. This event honors Texas’ beautiful wildflowers and promotes their conservation. The Texas Legislature established this day in 1981 thanks to Carroll Abbott\, a passionate wildflower preservationist. \n\n\n\nThe Carroll Abbott Wildflower Sanctuary\, located in the northwest portion of the Texas Woman’s University campus\, is dedicated to Carroll Abbott\, the founder of the Native Plant Society of Texas. It features a variety of native Texas wildflowers. \n\n\n\nShare your chapter’s ideas to promote our forty-fourth Texas Wildflower Day 2025\, increase attendance\, expand NPSOT organizational awareness throughout Texas\, and engage Texans in NPSOT’s mission. \n\n\n\nPresenters:Dr. Camelia Maier is Texas Woman’s University’s Cornaro Professor\, School of the Sciences\, Division of Biology\, Director and Curator\, TWU Herbarium\, and Chair of The Bettye Myers Butterfly Garden Advisory Committee\, which oversees The Carroll Abbott Wildflower Sanctuary and Texas Wildflower Day. \n\n\n\nTom Kirwan is a member of TWU’s Texas Wildflower Day Planning Committee and NPSOT’s point of contact for our collaboration with the Homegrown National Park movement. \n\n\n\nWhen: November 21\, 2024 (Third Thursday) 12 – 1 pm CST \n\n\n\nZoom Registration Link:https://npsot-org.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZYkduGsrzkvHt2-8zF3_Epo4fz0QEd0Eb4k

SUMMARY:Annual Native Plant/Seed Swap and Potluck - November 21
DESCRIPTION:Before you start all of your Thanksgiving festivities\, join us for one of favorite annual events! If you have native plants\, you likely have some new seedlings that have popped up\, clumps that need to be divided\, and seed heads to collect. Gather them up and trade them for some new species! This is always a fun event. What’s better than free plants\, right? \n\n\n\nPlease only bring specimens that are locally native to Harris and surrounding counties or the Gulf Coast ecoregion. You can also bring other useful native plant related materials you don’t need any more like books or tools. \n\n\n\nThis is a great opportunity to network with your fellow NPSOT-H members\, meet the board\, and enjoy time with other native plant enthusiasts. We hope you can join us; please bring your favorite sharable dish for the potluck! \n\n\n\nNote we start earlier than our normal meeting and have a potluck dinner. Here is a rough outline of our schedule for the evening. \n\n\n\n\n6:00 pm – Set-up plants and seeds/social time\n\n\n\n6:30 pm – Potluck dinner\n\n\n\n7:00 pm – Announcements\n\n\n\n7:15 pm – Treasury update \n\n\n\n7:20 pm – Plant talks\n\n\n\n8:00-8:30 pm – Plant & seed swap\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur monthly chapter meetings are held on every 3rd Thursday\, January – November. Our meetings are free and open to the public thanks to our members and sponsors. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nHouston Arboretum and Nature Center \n\n\n\n610 Entrance (preferred)120 W Loop N FwyHouston\, TX 77024 \n\n\n\nWoodway Entrance4501 Woodway DriveHouston\, TX 77024 \n\n\n\nOur next live-streamed meeting will be in January. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReturn to Houston Chapter Page

SUMMARY:Fungi in Forest Ecosystems – a Conversation and Walk at W. G. Jones State Forest
DESCRIPTION:Join The Woodlands G.R.E.E.N. member\, Teri MacArthur\, for a brief conversation about the role of fungi in forest ecosystems\, followed by a walk around the trails at W. G\, Jones State Forest at 9am on Saturday\, November 30. We’ll meet in the Classroom Building (1328 FM 1488\, 77384) for our discussion and then head out. Locating and identifying any mushrooms we may find will depend on rain nearer the date\, as well as soil temperatures that prompt many of our late summer and fall mushrooms to appear. We always find something interesting in the forest\, though\, so come prepared to be surprised! Bring your Field Notebook and a writing implement\, plus drinking water for the time outside\, estimated to be about 2 hours. Wear comfortable walking shoes\, long pants\, and long sleeves (weather permitting) to keep any late flying mosquitoes off your skin. \n\n\n\nIt will be helpful\, but not required\, to let Teri know you intend to join the group by sending an email to texasnaturelover@earthlink.net . \n\n\n\nIf you need assistance in finding the group on the morning of the event\, you can reach Teri at 281-381-3281.
