SUMMARY:Native Riparian Vegetation Beneficial for Holding Together Creeks and Rivers in Texas - May 21 Austin Chapter Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Ricky Linex at Chandor Nature Trail\, April 2023\n\n\n\nOur guest speaker this month is Ricky Linex. His presentation is a virtual creek walk across Texas identifying riparian plants found in different regions of the state.  Native plants in riparian areas across the state of Texas will be shown and discussed.  Plants are what hold the creeks and rivers together and we need to manage these plants to improve riparian health and survival.  \n\n\n\nRicky Linex retired in 2021 as a wildlife biologist for the Natural Resources Conservation Service and works as a range and wildlife consultant.  With NRCS Linex worked 51 counties in north central Texas covering the Rolling Plains\, Cross Timbers\, Blackland Prairie and Post Oak Savannah vegetational regions.  He worked 38.5 years with NRCS in Goldthwaite\, Snyder\, Abilene and Weatherford.  He is the author of Range Plants of North Central Texas\, A Land Users Guide to Their Identification\, Value and Management\, a plant identification book for Texas.  Range Plants was recognized in 2015 as an outstanding publication by the Texas Chapter-The Wildlife Society\, the Native Plant Society of Texas and the Texas Section-Society for Range Management and is available through the Botanical Research Institute of Texas.  He currently serves as President of the Native Plant Society of Texas. \n\n\n\nThis is a virtual meeting using Zoom. SUMMARY:Container Gardening with Keystone Plants presented by Krista De Cooke\, Homegrown National Park - May 21
DESCRIPTION:In this presentation\, Krista De Cooke will explore container gardening as a potent strategy to combat biodiversity loss. Attendees will learn how to cultivate keystone plants tailored to their growing conditions and suitable for small spaces\, using ecoregions as a guide for plant selection. Krista will showcase plant species that will be suitable for level II ecoregions across the United States and Canada\, highlighting their potential to support native biodiversity and serve as crucial refueling stops for pollinators. She will also emphasize the concept of Keystone Plants\, species that form the backbone of local ecosystems by providing essential insect food. By incorporating these keystone plants\, attendees will be able to actively contribute to the restoration of native biodiversity and address the urgent issue of ecosystem collapse. Joining this presentation will allow participants to make a meaningful impact on biodiversity regeneration\, one container at a time. \n\n\n\nThis presentation is part of the Monarch Conservation Webinar Series by Monarch Joint Venture.

SUMMARY:Lake Mineral Wells State Park Pollinator Garden Work Day\, Volunteer Opportunity\, Cross Timbers Chapter\, Mineral Wells\, Saturday\, 5/18/2024 at 9 a.m.
DESCRIPTION:🌿 Calling All Native Plant Enthusiasts! 🌿  Be a Pollinator Protector! 🐝🌸 \n\n\n\nJoin us for a morning of volunteer magic at Lake Mineral Wells State Park. 🌼✨ \n\n\n\nYou can help maintain the pollinator garden at Lake Mineral Wells State Park! 🌼🦋 This wonderful community effort supports our local ecosystems and provides habitat to facilitate the important work of pollinators. It gives volunteers the opportunity to work side-by-side with experienced gardeners and learn about natives and their care and maintenance. This garden provides educational information to visitors and is utilized by the park staff to explain the importance of native plants and their benefits. \n\n\n\nHere are some suggestions on clothing and what to bring: \n\n\n\n\nWork Clothing: Wear comfortable work clothing appropriate for the weather. Layers are great for adjusting to changing conditions.\n\n\n\nGloves: If you have gardening gloves\, bring them along. They’ll protect your hands while working with plants and soil.\n\n\n\nGardening Tools: If you own any gardening tools\, such as nippers\, shovels\, spades\, pitchforks\, or wheelbarrows\, feel free to bring them. Buckets and brooms are also useful. These tools can be incredibly helpful for various tasks.\n\n\n\nWater: Stay hydrated! Bring a water bottle to keep yourself refreshed during the work.\n\n\n\nHat:  A hat with a wide brim provides shade for your face\, neck\, and ears\, protecting you from direct sunlight. It helps prevent sunburn and reduces the risk of skin damage caused by UV radiation.  In case of cooler weather\, wear a hat to keep warm.\n\n\n\n\nAdditional Details: \n\n\n\n\nIf the temperature is below 40°F or if it’s raining\, the workday will be canceled. \n\n\n\nFor any specific questions or further information\, you can reach out to Cindy Crump at cindyleecrump@gmail.com.\n\n\n\nFor these months\, here are some details of plans\n\nMay: Weed removal and admiring the blooms that will cover the garden this month!\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation: \n\n\n\n\nLake Mineral Wells State Park\, 100 Park Road 71\, Mineral Wells\, Texas.\n\n\n\nBefore entering the park gates\, take a left into the administration building parking lot.\n\n\n\n\nMeeting Point: \n\n\n\n\nMeet at the garden located near the administration building entrance (before paying at the gate).\n\n\n\n\nLet’s come together and contribute to the beauty and health of our local environment! 🌿🌸

We’ll showcase some of our favorite success stories\, and explain how you too can get involved on lots of levels. \n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker – Carol Clark\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCarol Clark is a longtime member of the Native Plant Society of Texas\, a Texas Master Naturalist\, and a Monarch Watch Conservations Specialist. This three-acre site in Bellaire has inside and outside components and we will be welcome to both. \n\n\n\nIn addition\, we are offering to include a walk over and around the Kinder Land Bridge and Prairie Project at Memorial Park. The land bridge is a gentle climbable incline. If no incline is desired\, the immediate area before the bridge is also noteworthy prairie plants. \n\n\n\nBoth of these adventures will also allow us to stop for a quick bite\, so no one suffers from hunger\, and it is fun to break bread together anyway. We intend to be on the way home before rush hour. \n\n\n\nWe hope to carpool\, leaving from UHCL parking lot in as many cars as needed. We will need a quick response to count noses and cars and people willing to drive. \n\n\n\nPlease respond by Monday\, May 13. \n\n\n\n\n\nLocation – Meet at UHCL-EIH to carpoolParking lot D4 near UHCL Entrance 3 \n\n\n\nLocation – Guided TourNature Discovery Center7112 NewcastleBellaire\, TX 77401 \n\n\n\nLocation – ExploreKinder Land Bridge & PrairieMemorial DrHouston\, TX 77007
