SUMMARY:Boerne City Campus Natural Area (BCCNA) Workday
DESCRIPTION:Join us for BCCNA workdays! \n\n\n\nThe BCCNA project involves the restoration and enhancement of the Boerne City Campus Natural Area (BCCNA). The BCCNA is comprised of 13-acres on either side of the Old No. 9 Trail\, behind the library. We are working towards restoring this area to a native pollinator habitat\, creating a wildlife corridor and haven within the city. \n\n\n\nBCCNA Workdays take place on the first and third Thursdays of each month in 2025. \n\n\n\nOur meeting place will be in the Boerne Patrick Heath Public Library parking lot near the windmill. If you don’t see us at the windmill\, walk out behind the library across the creek as we’ve likely already started!  \n\n\n\nEach volunteer will be required to fill out the City of Boerne’s liability waiver the first time he or she volunteers in 2025. \n\n\n\nContact Jeff Schwarz at jeffschwarz27@gmail.com for more info.

SUMMARY:Rewilding Our Perception of What Belongs - May 15
DESCRIPTION:In ecological restoration\, especially in disturbed or urbanized areas\, the goal of returning to a singular “climax state” often clashes with the complex reality of the world. We tend to hold onto an idealized vision of a pre-human\, pristine ecological state\, overlooking the diverse outcomes as the result of complex processes interacting. What seems like failure or degradation may actually be the emergence of a new kind of mental interpretational climax\, shaped by input factors\, altered assumptions\, novel assemblages\, and community interactions. By shifting our perspective to recognize multiple expressions of resilience\, our role becomes less about enforcing a template and more about listening\, inquiring\, and collaborating with what exists. Restoration becomes a relationship.  \n\n\n\nPhoto courtesy of Andrea Matthews\n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker \n\n\n\nAndy Newman is the Chief Ecologist at The Earth Partners. He has 15 years of experience working within diverse ecosystems for a wide array of project types. His position places an emphasis leading the technical ecological restoration of projects\, managing construction and adaptive management\, and helping clients meet their compensatory mitigation requirements. His background includes environmental restoration planning\, stakeholder engagement\, construction\, planting\, and ecological uplift assessment. Andy’s specialties include aquatic feature delineations and jurisdictional determinations\, Clean Water Act permitting\, threatened and endangered species identification and consultations\, NEPA compliance\, plant identification\, and community classification. His favorite ecosystems include longleaf pine savannas\, coastal prairies\, and southern Appalachian forests. If his name sounds familiar\, he also leads our field trips! \n\n\n\nOur monthly chapter meetings are held on every 3rd Thursday\, January – November. Our meetings are free and open to the public thanks to our members and sponsors. \n\n\n\nThe presentation will start at 7:00 pm\, but come at 6:45 pm for a meet and greet with snacks. \n\n\n\nHouston Arboretum and Nature Center \n\n\n\n610 Entrance (preferred)120 W Loop N FwyHouston\, TX 77024 \n\n\n\nWoodway Entrance4501 Woodway DriveHouston\, TX 77024 \n\n\n\nMeetings will also be live-streamed and recorded for later viewing. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReturn to Houston Chapter Page

DESCRIPTION:🌿 Calling All Native Plant Enthusiasts! 🌿  Be a Pollinator Protector! 🐝🌸 \n\n\n\nJoin us for a morning of volunteer magic at Lake Mineral Wells State Park. 🌼✨ \n\n\n\nYou can help maintain the pollinator garden at Lake Mineral Wells State Park! 🌼🦋 This wonderful community effort supports our local ecosystems and provides habitat to facilitate the important work of pollinators. This garden provides educational information to visitors and is utilized by the park staff to explain the importance of native plants and their benefits. \n\n\n\nHere are some suggestions on clothing and what to bring: \n\n\n\n\nWork Clothing: Wear comfortable work clothing appropriate for the weather. Layers are great for adjusting to changing conditions.\n\n\n\nGloves: If you have gardening gloves\, bring them along. They’ll protect your hands while working with plants and soil.\n\n\n\nGardening Tools: If you own any gardening tools\, such as nippers\, shovels\, spades\, pitchforks\, or wheelbarrows\, feel free to bring them. Buckets and brooms are also useful. These tools can be incredibly helpful for various tasks.\n\n\n\nWater: Stay hydrated! SUMMARY:Habitat Workday @ EIH
DESCRIPTION:Habitat volunteers help weed and mulch flower beds\, plant native plants\, maintain pathways\, and trim trees and bushes. Volunteers may also help clean out the pond on select work days. \n\n\n\n\nNo experience necessary—we’ll show you what goes and what stays\n\n\n\nBring your own tools or use ours (we have gloves too)\n\n\n\nDon’t forget to bring a reusable water bottle\, hat\, and sunscreen!\n\n\n\n\nVolunteers must be 18 or older to participate in EIH’s workdays unless prior arrangements have been made. \n\n\n\nWe do not hold workdays when the university is officially closed. Also\, workdays are canceled during inclement weather\, though a light sprinkle or drizzle rarely keeps us out of the garden. If you’re not sure\, please call 281-283-3950 or 281-283-3045\, and we’ll let you know if we’re digging in. \n\n\n\nLocationEnvironmental Institute of Houston (Click link for Google Map)University of Houston-Clear LakeNorth Office Annex (NOA) 1 Building2700 Bay Area Blvd.Houston\, TX 77058
