SUMMARY:Boerne City Campus Natural Area (BCCNA) Workday
DESCRIPTION:Join us for BCCNA workdays! \n\n\n\nThe BCCNA project involves the restoration and enhancement of the Boerne City Campus Natural Area (BCCNA). The BCCNA is comprised of 13-acres on either side of the Old No. 9 Trail\, behind the library. We are working towards restoring this area to a native pollinator habitat\, creating a wildlife corridor and haven within the city. \n\n\n\nBCCNA Workdays take place on the first and third Thursdays of each month in 2025. \n\n\n\nOur meeting place will be in the Boerne Patrick Heath Public Library parking lot near the windmill. If you don’t see us at the windmill\, walk out behind the library across the creek as we’ve likely already started!  \n\n\n\nEach volunteer will be required to fill out the City of Boerne’s liability waiver the first time he or she volunteers in 2025. \n\n\n\nContact Jeff Schwarz at jeffschwarz27@gmail.com for more info.

SUMMARY:San Antonio Chapter Meeting - Bringing the Natural World Home Using Native Plants: A Personal Journey
DESCRIPTION:Arrive at 6:30pm to share or find native plants at the Plants x Donation table. \n\n\n\nThis will be a “hybrid” meeting\, attend in-person or online. \n\n\n\n\nIn person: The Gathering Center at the Urban Ecology Center at Phil Hardberger Park\, 8400 NW Military Hwy\n\n\n\nOnline: Please register in advance to attend via Zoom.\n\n\n\n\nPresentation by Craig Hensley – Naturalist and EducatorBringing the Natural World Home Using Native Plants: A Personal Journey\n\n\n\nThe use of native plants in landscaping our yards\, parks and elsewhere continues to grow in popularity. The challenge for many comes in how to start\, where to get plants\, and how to best care for them. Naturalist and educator Craig Hensley will share his journey into the world of native plants\, from growing them to enjoying the flush of pollinators and other critters that were invited back\, as a result. He’ll share his observations of what species seem preferred by his “new neighbors\,” as well as what you might expect by venturing into this life and community-altering adventure. \n\n\n\nCraig Hensley is a lifelong learner\, naturalist and educator\, having spent more than 40 years engaging audiences from Minnesota to Texas about the wonders of the natural world from birds and butterflies to the night sky\, native plants\, and everything in-between. He has developed a knack for growing a wide variety of native plants and through those planted in his and wife Terry Lashley’s yard has invited a ever-increasing diversity of fauna\, from bees\, butterflies\, flies\, wasps\, moths and beetles to those critters that eat them\, and those that eat those. Craig has a B.S. in Fisheries and Wildlife Management and a M.S. in Zoology\, and has worked for Texas Parks and Wildlife Department for more than a decade\, as an interpreter and resource specialist at Guadalupe River State Park and for the past five years as one of two Texas Nature Trackers Biologists. He is father to son Dr. Noah Hensley\, PhD. and daughter Dr. Jennifer Hensley\, a pediatrician\, and grandfather to four girls and one boy. \n\n\n\nIf you are attending in person\, there is no need to register. However\, if you are attending via Zoom\, please register here before the meeting begins as late registration and entry will not be allowed. After registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. \n\n\n\nNote: The Zoom recording will be available within days after the meeting on our  YouTube channel.

DESCRIPTION:🌿 Calling All Native Plant Enthusiasts! 🌿  Be a Pollinator Protector! 🐝🌸 \n\n\n\nJoin us for a morning of volunteer magic at Lake Mineral Wells State Park. 🌼✨ \n\n\n\nYou can help maintain the pollinator garden at Lake Mineral Wells State Park! 🌼🦋 This wonderful community effort supports our local ecosystems and provides habitat to facilitate the important work of pollinators. This garden provides educational information to visitors and is utilized by the park staff to explain the importance of native plants and their benefits. \n\n\n\nHere are some suggestions on clothing and what to bring: \n\n\n\n\nWork Clothing: Wear comfortable work clothing appropriate for the weather. Layers are great for adjusting to changing conditions.\n\n\n\nGloves: If you have gardening gloves\, bring them along. They’ll protect your hands while working with plants and soil.\n\n\n\nGardening Tools: If you own any gardening tools\, such as nippers\, shovels\, spades\, pitchforks\, or wheelbarrows\, feel free to bring them. Buckets and brooms are also useful. These tools can be incredibly helpful for various tasks.\n\n\n\nWater: Stay hydrated! Bring a water bottle to keep yourself refreshed during the work.\n\n\n\nHat:  A hat with a wide brim provides shade for your face\, neck\, and ears\, protecting you from direct sunlight. SUMMARY:The Tree Collectors: Tales of Arboreal Obsession – Williamson County Chapter Meeting\, February 13
DESCRIPTION:Join NPSOT-Williamson County on Thursday\, February 13\, 2025\, when our featured topic will be “The Tree Collectors: Tales of Arboreal Obsession” with NYT best-selling author Amy Stewart. Free and open to the public. The meeting begins at 7:00 PM.  The guest presentation begins after a short business meeting. \n\n\n\nOur guest speaker will be joining us via Zoom. This month’s presentation will not be recorded for YouTube.  \n\n\n\nAbout our topic: When Amy Stewart discovered a community of tree collectors\, she expected to meet horticultural fanatics driven to plant every species of oak or maple. But she also discovered that the urge to collect trees springs from something deeper and more profound: a longing for community\, a vision for the future\, or a path to healing and reconciliation. \n\n\n\nIn this 45-minute talk\, Amy introduces audiences to several of the remarkable people she met from around the world whose lives were transformed by their relationships to trees. Accompanied by her own hand-drawn illustrations of people and their trees\, this talk inspires audiences to reconsider their own connections to trees – and maybe start a collection! \n\n\n\nAbout our speaker: Amy Stewart is the New York Times best-selling author of fourteen books\, including The Tree Collectors\, The Drunken Botanist\, Wicked Plants\, and several other popular nonfiction titles about the natural world. She lives in Portland\, Oregon. \n\n\n\nNOTE: this month’s in-person location is the Georgetown Public Library\, 2nd Floor\, 402 W 8th St\, Georgetown\, Texas 78626.  Come early (6:30 PM) for expert advice\, to check out the seed swap board\, or just to visit. \n\n\n\n==> To attend via Zoom\, register at https://npsot-org.zoom.us/meeting/register/A_RDWrA4Qr2WIFIDHNRSiw#/registration \n\n\n\nThe original meeting announcement is here on the Williamson County Chapter’s blog page.
