SUMMARY:Collin County: July Meeting - Ecological Importance of Landscaping with Native Plants - Tree & Shrubs
DESCRIPTION:Our July 1 chapter meeting will include a presentation by Roger Sanderson on “Ecological Importance of Landscaping with Native Plants – Trees & Shrubs“. You can attend either in-person at the Heard Museum in McKinney or virtually via Zoom. \n\n\n\nSouthern Blackhaw Viburnum\, (Viburnum rufidulum)\n\n\n\nThe naturalist Doug Tallamy has brilliantly elucidated the critical need for using native plants in our home gardens and landscapes. Most people concerned about the natural world know that we need native plants to provide food for insects\, which in turn are necessary to provide food for birds and other animals. They also provide fruits to feed them directly and flowers to maintain pollinator populations to ensure their reproduction. So which trees and shrubs are most beneficial\, and provide the most uses to the most species of insects\, birds\, or animals – especially the ones we most want to share our backyards with? This presentation will cover a wide variety of trees and shrubs and what each provides. We will review which birds\, bugs\, or other wildlife use them\, their advantages to the home landscape\, and how they sustain the local ecology and a healthy environment. \n\n\n\nJoining our Meeting\n\n\n\nDoors (and Zoom) open at 6:30 PM for connection testing and setup. The meeting officially begins at 7:00 PM with a brief chapter update from our President Rodney Thomas\, followed by Roger’s presentation. \n\n\n\nOur meetings are open to the public. You can join us in person at the Heard Museum’s Laughlin Hall\, via the south entrance to the building\, or online through Zoom using the following details: \n\n\n\nZoom Link: https://tinyurl.com/yn85nbzd \n\n\n\nMeeting ID: 885 5459 6572 / Passcode: 571904 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout our Speaker\n\n\n\nRoger Sanderson has a vast and varied background as a naturalist\, with interests in native plants\, snakes\, birds\, insects\, and paleontology. He was Director of Horticulture at the Texas Discovery Gardens for over 7 years. In addition\, he was the Director of Botanical Gardens / Wildlife Biologist at the Heard Natural Science Museum for the prior 11 years. Roger also owned his own landscape company\, which he still operates part-time. A specialist on Pollinator Gardens\, he created a huge Butterfly Garden and Hummingbird Garden of national acclaim at Texas Discovery Gardens. He also developed noteworthy pollinator gardens at the Heard Museum\, Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge\, the Dallas Mayor’s Pollinator Garden\, and for numerous schools throughout the DFW area. Roger had a weekly column for several years in the Dallas Morning News on plants and gardening and continues to write articles about nature in several publications.

SUMMARY:Boerne City Campus Natural Area (BCCNA) Workday
DESCRIPTION:Join us for BCCNA workdays! \n\n\n\nThe BCCNA project involves the restoration and enhancement of the Boerne City Campus Natural Area (BCCNA). The BCCNA is comprised of 13-acres on either side of the Old No. 9 Trail\, behind the library. We are working towards restoring this area to a native pollinator habitat\, creating a wildlife corridor and haven within the city. \n\n\n\nBCCNA Workdays take place on the first and third Thursdays of each month. \n\n\n\nOur meeting place will be in the Boerne Patrick Heath Public Library parking lot near the windmill. If you don’t see us at the windmill\, walk out behind the library across the creek as we’ve likely already started!  \n\n\n\nEach volunteer will be required to fill out the City of Boerne’s liability waiver the first time he or she volunteers. \n\n\n\nContact Jeff Schwarz at jeffschwarz27@gmail.com for more info.

SUMMARY:Lake Mineral Wells State Park Pollinator Garden Work Day\, Volunteer Opportunity\, Cross Timbers Chapter\, Mineral Wells\, Saturday\, 7/19/2025 at 9 a.m.
DESCRIPTION:🌿 Calling All Native Plant Enthusiasts! 🌿  Be a Pollinator Protector! 🐝🌸 \n\n\n\nJoin us for a morning of volunteer magic at Lake Mineral Wells State Park. 🌼✨ \n\n\n\nYou can help maintain the pollinator garden at Lake Mineral Wells State Park! 🌼🦋 This wonderful community effort supports our local ecosystems and provides habitat to facilitate the important work of pollinators. This garden provides educational information to visitors and is utilized by the park staff to explain the importance of native plants and their benefits. \n\n\n\nHere are some suggestions on clothing and what to bring: \n\n\n\n\nWork Clothing: Wear comfortable work clothing appropriate for the weather. Layers are great for adjusting to changing conditions.\n\n\n\nGloves: If you have gardening gloves\, bring them along. They’ll protect your hands while working with plants and soil.\n\n\n\nGardening Tools: If you own any gardening tools\, such as nippers\, shovels\, spades\, pitchforks\, or wheelbarrows\, feel free to bring them. Buckets and brooms are also useful. These tools can be incredibly helpful for various tasks.\n\n\n\nWater: Stay hydrated! Bring a water bottle to keep yourself refreshed during the work.\n\n\n\nHat:  A hat with a wide brim provides shade for your face\, neck\, and ears\, protecting you from direct sunlight. It helps prevent sunburn and reduces the risk of skin damage caused by UV radiation.  In case of cooler weather\, wear a hat to keep warm.\n\n\n\n\nAdditional Details: \n\n\n\n\nIf the temperature is below 40°F or if it’s raining\, the workday will be canceled. \n\n\n\nFor any specific questions or further information\, you can reach out to Cindy Crump at cindyleecrump@gmail.com or Vicki Brooks at vicki.brooks@icloud.com\n\n\n\n\nLocation: \n\n\n\n\nLake Mineral Wells State Park\, 100 Park Road 71\, Mineral Wells\, Texas.\n\n\n\nBefore entering the park gates\, take a left into the administration building parking lot.\n\n\n\n\nMeeting Point: \n\n\n\n\nMeet at the garden located near the administration building entrance (before paying at the gate).\n\n\n\n\nLet’s come together and contribute to the beauty and health of our local environment! 🌿🌸 \n\n\n\nVolunteer hours count towards Texas Master Naturalist and Texas Master Gardeners.
