SUMMARY:Field Trip: Memorial Park Kinder Land Bridge and Wolff Prairie
DESCRIPTION:Meeting Location \n\n\n\nIn Google Maps- Parking Lot- Memorial Park- Running Track (N Picnic Ln) – we will meet at the Rally Pavilion in the southern part of the parking area (GPS 29.76584\, -95.44630). \n\n\n\nThings To Bring \n\n\n\nWe may wander off trail\, so boots/closed toe shoes and bug spray recommended. Please bring adequate hydration and other items you may require to be comfortable. I anticipate we will be in full sun the entire time\, so dress appropriately. \n\n\n\nField Trip Overview \n\n\n\nThe Memorial Land Bridge and Prairie Project has provided Houston with a unique driving experience while providing habitat connectivity between larger environs north and south of Memorial Drive. From a plant perspective this area will provide participants with the ability to see how species respond to various restoration techniques. If time permits\, we will explore forest edge\, prairie\, wetland\, and riparian communities. Due to the amount of earthwork required for this project\, erosion due to slopes and utilization of subsurface clays made rapid vegetation and soil cohesion via rooting extremely important. As a result\, we will likely see a few grass species such as sideoats grama (Bouteloua curtipendula\, State Grass of Texas) and hairy grama (B. hirsuta). These species are more typical of Central and Western Texas\, but inclusions within the Houston area are often on recently exposed lagoonal/marine mudstones (e.g. clays deposited in a marine/deltac systems). In addition to plant identification\, we will discuss how plant species can be selected based on anticipated post-restoration conditions\, how adaptive management can be utilized to promote success\, and how high-profile projects demand additional planning. \n\n\n\nAdditional Site Information \n\n\n\nhttps://www.memorialparkconservancy.org/discover/master-plan/land-bridge-prairie-restoration-project/ \n\n\n\nAbout the Field Trip Leader \n\n\n\nAndy Newman is the Chief Ecologist at The Earth Partners and has 15 years of experience working within diverse ecosystems for a wide array of project types. His position places an emphasis leading the technical ecological restoration of projects\, managing construction and adaptive management\, and helping clients meet their compensatory mitigation requirements. His background includes environmental restoration planning\, stakeholder engagement\, construction\, planting\, and ecological uplift assessment. Andy’s specialties include aquatic feature delineations and jurisdictional determinations\, Clean Water Act permitting\, threatened and endangered species identification and consultations\, NEPA compliance\, plant identification\, and community classification. His favorite ecosystems include longleaf pine savannas\, coastal prairies\, and southern Appalachian forests. \n\n\n\nAdditional Coordination Details \n\n\n\nPlease contact Bob Romero for any further coordination details at bobromero@gmail.com or by phone at 713.248.6030.

SUMMARY:Building Bird-Friendly Communities with Houston Audubon: How to Attract and Support Native Birds Wherever You Live\, Work\, and Play - September 19
DESCRIPTION:Birds are not only beautiful and fascinating creatures\, but they are also essential to balanced and healthy ecosystems. Despite their importance\, bird populations across the United States have faced a staggering decline in the last 50 years. Join Amber Leung of Houston Audubon as she delves into the factors driving this decline and explores how we can make a difference. Whether you live in an urban area\, suburban neighborhood\, or rural setting\, there are practical steps you can take to create bird-friendly environments. Anyone can play a role in safeguarding these vital creatures for future generations. Amber will equip you with the knowledge and tools to attract and support native birds wherever you live\, work\, and play\, ensuring that their songs and presence remain a cherished part of our world for years to come. \n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker\n\n\n\nAmber Leung is the Nature Programs Manager for Houston Audubon. She teaches about birds and the rest of the natural world at the Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary in Houston. Her love for the natural world was nurtured from an early age through camping and hiking adventures with her family in Austin. Her passion for birding took flight during a Coastal Ornithology course while pursuing a BS in Marine Sciences at Texas A&M University in Galveston. In 2015\, Amber became a certified Texas Master Naturalist and went on to serve two terms as president of the Coastal Prairie Chapter. She is deeply committed to promoting the importance of all aspects of a healthy ecosystem\, particularly those that are often overlooked. In her free time\, Amber enjoys cultivating her own native plant garden\, creating wildlife-inspired art\, and immersing herself in nature\, where she delights in observing birds and reptiles.  \n\n\n\n\n\nOur monthly chapter meetings are held on every 3rd Thursday\, January – November. Our meetings are free and open to the public thanks to our members and sponsors. \n\n\n\nThe presentation will start at 7:00 pm\, but come at 6:45 pm for a meet and greet with snacks. \n\n\n\nHouston Arboretum and Nature Center \n\n\n\n610 Entrance (preferred)120 W Loop N FwyHouston\, TX 77024 \n\n\n\nWoodway Entrance4501 Woodway DriveHouston\, TX 77024 \n\n\n\nMeetings will also be live-streamed and recorded for later viewing. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReturn to Houston Chapter Page

SUMMARY:Rediscovering the MoKan Prairie - Williamson County Chapter Meeting\, September 12
DESCRIPTION:Join NPSOT-Williamson County on Thursday\, September 12\, 2024\, when our featured topic will be “Rediscovering the MoKan Prairie” with Ashley Landry.   \n\n\n\nFree and open to the public. The meeting begins at 7:00 PM.  Our guest speaker’s presentation begins after a short business meeting. \n\n\n\nThis month’s guest presentation will NOT be recorded for our YouTube channel. \n\n\n\nAbout our topic: This presentation will tell the story of the forgotten MoKan Prairie of Williamson County. This prairie was the “crown jewel” of our Central Texas prairies\, and you’ll hear the dramatic (but ultimately futile) account of the efforts to protect it. We’ll also explore some of the special MoKan Prairie plants and our efforts to save those plant genetics through seed collecting and plant salvage. \n\n\n\nAbout our speaker: Ashley Landry is a Texas Master Naturalist\, a member of the Native Plant Society of Texas\, and the founder of the Native Plant Rescue Project. She has been featured in Wildflower magazine\, The Austin Chronicle\, Central Texas Gardener and the Liberty Hill Independent. She is an avid iNaturalist user and enjoys spending her free time botanizing. \n\n\n\nNOTE: this month’s in-person location is the Georgetown Parks & Rec Administration Building\, 1101 N College St\, Georgetown\, Texas 78626. \n\n\n\nThe link to register on Zoom is below. \n\n\n\nThe original meeting announcement is here on the Williamson County Chapter’s blog page.

SUMMARY:Chapter Meeting - A Conversation About Invasive Plants
DESCRIPTION:A Conversation about Invasive Plants / What they are / Why They’re Harmful / And How We Can Do Better for the Environment by Pam Lienhard at Riverside Nature Center\, 150 Francisco Lemos St. \n\n\n\nThis program will discuss what plants are considered invasive; the difficulty in recognizing and controlling invasive plants; the damage they might cause to the environment; why native plants are better for our habitat; and offer suggestions on which native plants are suitable substitutions in your landscape. \n\n\n\nA handout of common invasive plants of the area and suggestions for native Texas plant alternatives will be available. \n\n\n\nPam Lienhard is a 5th generation Texan; grew up in New Braunfels; attended Southwest Texas State University and University of Illinois. \n\n\n\nShe is a 20 + year member of NPSOT; became a certified Master Naturalist in 2015; had the great fortune to work on the NPSOT state board where I learned a lot about invasive plants from Deedy Wright and Cheryl Hamilton \n\n\n\n“I think my greatest appreciation of nature came as a student and visitor in Germany. A friend and I worked one summer in Bavaria with a clear lake (no gasoline engines allowed) in the foreground and majestic mountains all around.  I learned one could walk through forests\, fields and meadows pretty much at will (as long as you stayed on the trail…it was Germany after all). I was hooked on being out in natural habitats. \n\n\n\nHaving grown up in Central Texas\, I love the natural beauty of the Hill Country. I’ve lived in Kerrville for 23 years\, but am saddened by how quickly much of this beauty is being lost.“

SUMMARY:Native Grasses and Groundcovers - Hybrid Clear Lake Chapter Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for our chapter meeting in person or online! \n\n\n\n6:15 Doors Opens – UHCL Bayou Building\, Garden Room6:40 Zoom Opens6:45 Business Meeting6:55 Plant of the Month7:00 Guest Speaker \n\n\n\nTexas native grasses and groundcovers can be a great addition to your landscape. Native grasses not only add structural interest but also create valuable wildlife habitats. Cheryl Barajas will share insights on how to seamlessly incorporate these grasses into your garden. Bev Morrison will cover the selection and approaches to groundcovers\, many of which can lead to minimal or even turf-free lawns. But be cautious—some ground covers can spread quickly! Using native grasses and groundcovers in your garden is easier and more beautiful than you might expect. \n\n\n\nAbout the Speakers\n\n\n\nCheryl Barajas is a dedicated native plant enthusiast\, currently serving as the Plant Sale Committee Chair. With her expertise as a Master Gardener since 2012 and a Master Naturalist since 2019\, Cheryl’s passion for the environment and over five years of active membership in the Native Plant Society make her a valued advocate for sustainable gardening and native plant conservation. \n\n\n\nBev Morrison has recently developed an interest in plants\, despite not having a gardening background. She is a Master Naturalist\, teaches fourth graders through the Longhorn Project\, and volunteers at various nature and conservation sites. Although she enjoys birding\, her primary interests are prairies and trees. Bev is eager to share her knowledge about trees through the Native Landscape Certification Program (NLCP) while continuing to learn herself. \n\n\n\nIn-person – Parking Pass Required\n\n\n\nNew YELLOW parking passes are needed. Parking & Transportation will be checking! Patty Steinke will be outside handing out passes. If you have a pass\, don’t forget it – you will not get another one if you picked one up previously.
