The topic is the “Bottomland Hardwood Forests of North Texas”\, and the presenter is Ben Sandifer.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur program starts at 6:30 for the testing of connections\, with a short chapter update by our president\, Rodney Thomas\, at 7:00\, followed by our presentation. Enter through the door on the south side of the building. \n\n\n\nBen will explore North Texas’ extensive bottomland hardwood forests\, covering the diverse flora and fauna among the Upper Trinity River watershed in North Texas. He is an author\, photographer\, and environmental advocate for parks and open spaces where he can often be found with camera in hand. His award-winning nature photographs have been featured in local\, state\, and national publications. He is a Certified Master Birder through the Audubon Dallas sponsored North Central Texas Master Birder Program. In 2016\, he was named an Honorary Lifetime Texas Master Naturalist for his substantial contributions to the furtherance of the activities of the organization. In addition to his professional life as an accountant\, Ben serves as the naturalist for the historic Dallas Hunting and Fishing Club. \n\n\n\nAs a volunteer\, Ben currently serves as a member of the City of Dallas Forestry Stakeholder Committee\, Trinity Park Conservancy Conservation Committee\, citizen project lead at Big Spring Preserve and citizen project lead for the Friends of the Fish Hatchery at White Rock Lake. In Dallas Great Trinity Forest\, Ben is an EPA and TCEQ certified Texas Stream Team volunteer who monitors water quality at numerous locations in the Dallas Trinity River watershed.

SUMMARY:Boerne City Campus Natural Area (BCCNA) Workday
DESCRIPTION:Join us for BCCNA workdays!   \n\n\n\nThe BCCNA project involves the restoration and enhancement of the Boerne City Campus Natural Area (BCCNA). The BCCNA is comprised of 13-acres on either side of the Old No. 9 Trail\, behind the library. We are working towards restoring this area to a native pollinator habitat\, creating a wildlife corridor and haven within the city. \n\n\n\nBCCNA Workdays take place on the first and third Thursdays of each month in 2025.  \n\n\n\nOur meeting place will be in the Boerne Patrick Heath Public Library parking lot near the windmill. Volunteers may also help clean out the pond on select work days. \n\n\n\n\nNo experience necessary—we’ll show you what goes and what stays\n\n\n\nBring your own tools or use ours (we have gloves too)\n\n\n\nDon’t forget to bring a reusable water bottle\, hat\, and sunscreen!\n\n\n\n\nVolunteers must be 18 or older to participate in EIH’s workdays unless prior arrangements have been made. \n\n\n\nWe do not hold workdays when the university is officially closed. Also\, workdays are canceled during inclement weather\, though a light sprinkle or drizzle rarely keeps us out of the garden. NPSOT-Wilco board members will be on hand to chat about current projects and committees. \n\n\n\nAbout our featured topic:   The Texabama Croton is a rare but beautiful species of shrub in the Euphorbiaceae family known from small areas of Texas and Alabama. There are numerous oddities about the plant\, such as its habitat and range\, discovery\, and lack of cultivation. \n\n\n\nThis presentation will shed light on what makes the Texabama Croton a botanical enigma and some important lessons with vast implications for Central Texas ecosystems that can be gleaned by studying the plant. \n\n\n\nAbout our guest speaker:   Tyson Bartlett is a self-taught native plant enthusiast who serves as a Director at Large on the board of directors for the Williamson County Chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas. He is also a member of the Good Water Chapter of the Texas Master Naturalists and started the Williamson County Nature Journaling Club to promote the appreciation of nature through art and observation. DESCRIPTION:🌿 Calling All Native Plant Enthusiasts! 🌿  Be a Pollinator Protector! 🐝🌸 \n\n\n\nJoin us for a morning of volunteer magic at Lake Mineral Wells State Park. 🌼✨ \n\n\n\nYou can help maintain the pollinator garden at Lake Mineral Wells State Park! 🌼🦋 This wonderful community effort supports our local ecosystems and provides habitat to facilitate the important work of pollinators.  This garden provides educational information to visitors and is utilized by the park staff to explain the importance of native plants and their benefits. \n\n\n\nHere are some suggestions on clothing and what to bring: \n\n\n\n\nWork Clothing: Wear comfortable work clothing appropriate for the weather. Layers are great for adjusting to changing conditions.\n\n\n\nGloves: If you have gardening gloves\, bring them along. They’ll protect your hands while working with plants and soil.\n\n\n\nGardening Tools: If you own any gardening tools\, such as nippers\, shovels\, spades\, pitchforks\, or wheelbarrows\, feel free to bring them.  Buckets and brooms are also useful. These tools can be incredibly helpful for various tasks.\n\n\n\nWater: Stay hydrated! Bring a water bottle to keep yourself refreshed during the work.\n\n\n\nHat:  A hat with a wide brim provides shade for your face\, neck\, and ears\, protecting you from direct sunlight. Social time 5:30 p.m.\, business meeting 5:40 p.m.\, Plant-of-the-Month 5:50 p.m.\, hour-long program 6:20 p.m.  All presentations are available via Zoom and are recorded for our Youtube channel. \n\n\n\nBiography \n\n\n\nDebbie Kyrouac began her interest in plant ecology and plant taxonomy during her graduate work at Texas Tech Univ.  She and her family moved to San Antonio in 2009 where she took a job teaching Biology at Northeast Lakeview College and renewed her interest in local plants.  More recently\, she has expanded her interest in native plants of Texas through both NPSOT and the Texas Master Naturalists.  Debbie is currently participating in numerous plant and butterfly survey projects at the Bracken Preserve\, Guadalupe River State Park\, the Heritage Museum garden and Madrone Trail pollinator garden.  She also enjoys hours spent developing a native plant habitat on her own property.
