SUMMARY:Native Riparian Vegetation Beneficial for Holding Together Creeks and Rivers in Texas - May 21 Austin Chapter Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Ricky Linex at Chandor Nature Trail\, April 2023\n\n\n\nOur guest speaker this month is Ricky Linex. His presentation is a virtual creek walk across Texas identifying riparian plants found in different regions of the state.  Native plants in riparian areas across the state of Texas will be shown and discussed.  Plants are what hold the creeks and rivers together and we need to manage these plants to improve riparian health and survival.  \n\n\n\nRicky Linex retired in 2021 as a wildlife biologist for the Natural Resources Conservation Service and works as a range and wildlife consultant.  With NRCS Linex worked 51 counties in north central Texas covering the Rolling Plains\, Cross Timbers\, Blackland Prairie and Post Oak Savannah vegetational regions.  He worked 38.5 years with NRCS in Goldthwaite\, Snyder\, Abilene and Weatherford.  He is the author of Range Plants of North Central Texas\, A Land Users Guide to Their Identification\, Value and Management\, a plant identification book for Texas.  Range Plants was recognized in 2015 as an outstanding publication by the Texas Chapter-The Wildlife Society\, the Native Plant Society of Texas and the Texas Section-Society for Range Management and is available through the Botanical Research Institute of Texas.  He currently serves as President of the Native Plant Society of Texas. \n\n\n\nThis is a virtual meeting using Zoom. SUMMARY:Rainscaping: The Next Generation of Water-Wise Landscaping - Austin Chapter Meeting June 18
DESCRIPTION:With droughts and floods\, our water challenges need an innovative solution. Rain gardens help solve both problems by maximizing the amount of water that stays on and in your landscape. Rain gardens support lush vegetation to provide habitat for butterflies and birds. Create your own backyard oasis by learning how to harvest the rain in this presentation \n\n\n\nShannon founded Ecosystem Regeneration Artisans (ERA) Landscaping in 2017 to unite talented land stewards on projects that realize the vision of creating healthy ecological communities. From residential Rainscapes to wildlife management on large-acreage ranches\, Shannon and her team create projects focused on earth care and people care. Their gardens use native plants to provide wildlife habitat for pollinators and birds\, incorporate perennial food crops for human consumption\, and involve mechanisms to harvest rainwater to capture it into the soil before it runs off\, and contributes to flooding. \n\n\n\nThis is a virtual meeting using Zoom. Please click here to register and get the Zoom for this meeting. \n\n\n\nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.

You can send submissions to austin.npsot@gmail.com  * If you want to pick a plant species to educate us on\, please email us in advance to see if someone else has claimed that plant\, so we don’t get too much repeated information on the same plant!  \n\n\n\nDeadline: Submit photos/videos/audio by Saturday\, February 22 so we have time to assemble them. If we have time for additional stories and photos\, anyone wanting to share can do so following those who submitted in advance. Questions? SUMMARY:Austin Chapter Meeting - Bringing Monarchs Back to the Reilly School Gardens - May 27
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Julia Weatherby \n\n\n\nMonarch butterflies are losing important food and habitat leading their populations to decline. The Native Plant Society of Texas awards grants to schools\, nature centers and other gardens. These grants fund spring and fall blooming native plants and native milkweed for our Monarchs to survive and successfully migrate through Texas. This presentation covers our experience with our plant planning and installation\, lessons learned\, how school children interact with the garden\, how we organize and encourage families to join in work days\, and which Texas native plants we recommend for gardens that are public and where children have full access.  \n\n\n\nJulia Weatherby is the President of the Austin Chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas. She is also a lead organizer of the native plant gardens at Reilly Elementary School. Julia has an educational and work background in technology and healthcare. She has served on the board of the Mothers’ Milk Bank at Austin and volunteered with AGE of Central Texas and Partners in Parenting. Julia enjoys working with native plants in gardens at her home\, Reilly Elementary School and the German-Texas Heritage Society.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis is a hybrid online and in-person meeting\, with the in-person meeting at \n\n\n\nLakewood Clubhouse 7317 Lakewood Dr. Austin\, TX 78750 \n\n\n\nThis is off 360. \n\n\n\n Socializing starts at 6:30 PM\, and programming begins at 7:00 PM. SUMMARY:Rescheduled: Austin Chapter Native Plant Sale
DESCRIPTION:Due to severe storms forecasted during our original plant sale date (October 25)\, the plant sale has been rescheduled to be Sunday\, November 2 from 10am to 2pm. \n\n\n\nThe Austin Chapter’s Fall Native Plant Sale will be held at the Dowell Ranch Preserve\, part of the Native Prairie Association of Texas\, 301 Farm to Market 1626\, Manchaca\, TX 78652 \n\n\n\nWe focus on selling plants native to the ecoregions here in Austin. They are great choices for your yard\, patio\, or other habitat. These plants support local and migrating wildlife\, and require less water that many non-natives. \n\n\n\nIt is quite a joy to see your space full of native bees\, butterflies and birds thanks to native plants. Add your native gardens and other native habitats to the Homegrown National Park map and help represent NPSOT Austin and Texas going native! \n\n\n\nYou are welcome to bring nursery pots in good condition from 4″ to 10 gallon and trays for our NPSOT members to use to grow plants for our fall sale. \n\n\n\nPlants will be arranged by plant form category (trees\, shrub\, grasses\, etc) and within the category in alphabetical order by scientific name.  So order your shopping lists accordingly! Our plant sale page has the list of plants that should be available and the first list with photos is arranged similarly to the plant categories we will use at the sale. \n\n\n\nWe are so grateful to the Native Prairies Association of Texas for allowing us to hold the sale at Dowell Ranch.
