SUMMARY:The Not-Moths of Moth Night - Hybrid Clear Lake Chapter Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for our chapter meeting in person or online! \n\n\n\n6:15 Doors Opens – UHCL Bayou Building\, Room 25246:40 Zoom Opens6:45 Business Meeting6:55 Plant of the Month7:00 Guest Speaker8:00 Mothing at UHCL \n\n\n\nRich Sommer will discuss “mothing” and some of the interesting species he has encountered. While Rich loves a hike hunting for insects\, an easy way to find specimens is using a UV light to attract them at night. Engaging in regular “moth nights” at locations such as Exploration Green and Deer Park Prairie\, Rich actively introduces others to the world of mothing at venues like Buffalo Bayou and Memorial Park. Interested in boosting your observation and species count for the City Nature Challenge? Consider mothing in your own backyard\, as these “moth nights” attract a diverse array of night-flying insects. He will also talk about the upcoming City Nature Challenge\, an event he eagerly anticipates each year. Notably\, he was the Houston region’s top observer the last two years. Furthermore\, he will highlight the role of iNaturalist\, an integral tool in his mothing pursuits. \n\n\n\nFollowing the meeting\, attendees are encouraged to participate in a hands-on mothing experience. Rich and his team will have moth stations set up with UV lights and will provide assistance with viewing and identifying the specimens for up to an hour after the meeting. \n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker\n\n\n\nRich Sommer began volunteering at Exploration Green nearly 10 years ago\, with little knowledge about native plants. Through his involvement with Exploration Green\, NPSOT\, the Texas Master Naturalist program\, and iNaturalist\, he gained a deep understanding of the importance of native plants to the ecosystem. He joined NPSOT around 2016\, the Exploration Green Board of Directors in 2018\, and the Gulf Coast TMN chapter in spring 2021. Over time\, he started noticing the insects in his flower and bird photographs. As his knowledge expanded\, he became fascinated by their life cycles and their complex relationships with plants\, mammals\, and other insects. Rich finds parasitic wasps and insect galls particularly intriguing. \n\n\n\nIn-person – Parking Pass Required\n\n\n\nParking passes required. If you have a pass\, don’t forget it – you will not get another one if you picked one up previously. DO NOT park in faculty/staff parking (tickets will be issued). Martha Richeson will be passing out parking passes Monday evening. Watch for her bright blinking vest on the sidewalk between the Bayou Building and the pay station near the Recreation Center. If you miss out on the NPSOT parking passes\, you will need to buy a parking pass from the pay station. \n\n\n\nMap and Directions – The meeting will be held in Room 2524 of the Bayou Building at UHCL. \n\n\n\nUniversity of Houston-Clear Lake2700 Bay Area Blvd.Houston\, TX 77058 \n\n\n\nOnline – Zoom\n\n\n\nRegister in advance for this meeting. After registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThis is a FREE EVENT. Meetings are open to members and non-members. DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, May 15 \n\n\n\n\n9:30 am -Depart from UHCL-EIH parking lotRiders – Don’t forget your UHCL parking pass!\n\n\n\n10:30 am – Guided Tour at Nature Discovery Center\n\n\n\n??? – Lunch\n\n\n\n??? – Tour Kinder Land Bridge at Memorial Park\n\n\n\n??? – Return before rush hour\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe Clear Lake Chapter has a 10:30 am guided tour of the Nature Discovery Center lead by Eric Duran\, who spoke to our chapter at our March meeting. This three-acre site in Bellaire has inside and outside components and we will be welcome to both. \n\n\n\nIn addition\, we are offering to include a walk over and around the Kinder Land Bridge and Prairie Project at Memorial Park. The land bridge is a gentle climbable incline. If no incline is desired\, the immediate area before the bridge is also noteworthy prairie plants. \n\n\n\nBoth of these adventures will also allow us to stop for a quick bite\, so no one suffers from hunger\, and it is fun to break bread together anyway. We intend to be on the way home before rush hour. \n\n\n\nWe hope to carpool\, leaving from UHCL parking lot in as many cars as needed. We will need a quick response to count noses and cars and people willing to drive. \n\n\n\nPlease respond by Monday\, May 13. \n\n\n\n\n\nLocation – Meet at UHCL-EIH to carpoolParking lot D4 near UHCL Entrance 3 \n\n\n\nLocation – Guided TourNature Discovery Center7112 NewcastleBellaire\, TX 77401 \n\n\n\nLocation – ExploreKinder Land Bridge & PrairieMemorial DrHouston\, TX 77007

SUMMARY:CANCELED - Keeping it Local: Integrating Native Plants in Your Landscape - Hybrid Clear Lake Chapter Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Due to the impending arrival of Beryl\, we have decided to cancel our chapter meeting scheduled for Monday\, July 8\, 2024. Stay safe during the storm and we will see you next month! \n\n\n\nPlease join us for our chapter meeting in person or online! \n\n\n\n6:15 Doors Opens – UHCL Bayou Building\, Room 13336:40 Zoom Opens6:45 Business Meeting6:55 Plant of the Month7:00 Guest Speaker \n\n\n\nWhat’s all the hype about native plants? Through photos and stories\, native Texan Cherie Colburn demonstrates her gardening mantra of “first\, do no harm” by showing how attention to where\, why\, and what’s in our gardens can make us better stewards of our world. \n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker\n\n\n\nA professional landscape designer and native Texan\, Cherie has designed hundreds of low-maintenance commercial and residential landscape designs since 1994 through her company\, Nature’s Tapestry. She’s also helped create schoolyard gardens and habitats throughout Texas. As a garden writer\, she’s authored traditionally published books for both children and adults while also contributing more than 100 magazine and newspaper articles over the last four decades. Cherie’s gardening blog – Garden Dishes – was named by PBS’ Central Texas Gardener as a favorite. \n\n\n\nIn her spare time\, you can find Cherie singing and gardening – often simultaneously – at her home or church in The Woodlands where she feels confident she’s proven the theory that singing to plants makes them grow faster. Or\, maybe that it only works on native plants and noxious weeds! \n\n\n\nIn-person – Parking Pass Required\n\n\n\nIf you have a pass\, don’t forget it – you will not get another one if you picked one up previously. If you need a pass\, arrive early enough to pick one up in Room 1333 (meeting room) and to place it in your car. DO NOT park in faculty/staff parking (enforced 24/7). \n\n\n\nArrive early to socialize and enter your name in the drawing for the door prize. \n\n\n\nMap and Directions – The meeting will be held in Bayou Building Room 1333 at UHCL. \n\n\n\nUniversity of Houston-Clear Lake2700 Bay Area Blvd.Houston\, TX 77058 \n\n\n\nOnline – Zoom\n\n\n\nRegister in advance for this meeting.
