SUMMARY:Prosper Prairie Walk
DESCRIPTION:Join the NPSOT-Collin County Chapter for a chapter-led native plant walk through the prairie at the Raymond Community Park in Prosper on Thursday\, April 30\, 2026\, at 6:45 PM. The walk will be led by Melanie Schuchart. Plan on about one hour\, though participants are welcome to leave earlier if needed. \n\n\n\nLocation (Updated): Do not use the official park address; it will take you to the wrong side of the park. Instead\, follow these three steps:1) Search your GPS for the intersection of Coit Rd & First St\, Prosper\, TX.2) From that intersection\, drive North on Coit Road.3) Watch for a gravel road on your left (the West side of Coit). Turn there into the gravel parking lot where we will meet. \n\n\n\nNote: Because of construction on Coit Road\, please allow an extra 15 minutes of travel time to ensure you arrive by the start of the walk! This prairie is in a period of change. The park is under development\, sidewalks have been added\, and parts of the prairie have been disturbed\, making this a good opportunity to observe both the blooms and how the prairie responds over time. \n\n\n\nWhat to wear and bring: Long pants\, closed-toe shoes\, sunscreen\, and insect repellent are recommended. You may also want to bring a camera\, binoculars\, and a wildflower guide.

The speaker is Sarah F. Jayne – she is an environmentalist\, educator\, and wildlife advocate. Her book “Nature’s Action Guide: How to Support Biodiversity and Your Local Ecosystem” is a companion to Doug Tallamy’s “Nature’s Best Hope: A New Approach to Conservation That Starts in Your Yard” and features 15 urgent actions to support biodiversity. \n\n\n\nPresentation Summary\n\n\n\nNow more than ever our yards and community spaces need to support biodiversity. How can we ensure that our spaces are both ecologically rich and beautiful? We’ll look at which plants matter most when it comes to your local biodiversity; how to procure them for generous plantings; and how to place them to increase their appeal to wildlife and people\, along with strategies to protect the wildlife our natural plantings attract. We’ll consider strategies to ensure that our landscapes gain community acceptance such that they become invitations for others to transform their landscapes. A cost-conscious\, DIY approach makes taking action doable. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker Bio \n\n\n\nSarah’s work has been featured in The Joe Gardener Show\, A Way to Garden podcast\, Homegrown National Park\, and the New York Times. Everyone is invited to present. Presentations can be done in-person or remotely via Zoom. \n\n\n\n\nWhat to Share: Pictures of your favorite native Texas plants from your home\, a park\, or any natural area.\n\n\n\nTime: Presentations have no minimum length\, but are limited to a 10-minute maximum.\n\n\n\nRequirement: Just one! You can attend either in person at the Heard Museum in McKinney or virtually via Zoom.  \n\n\n\nOur speaker\, Rufus Stephens\, will be discussing how diverse and healthy native plant communities are the cornerstone of healthy wildlife habitats. Birds can be a great indicator for healthy plant communities. Recent articles have sounded the alarm about dramatic declines in bird and butterfly populations. You can attend either in-person at the Heard Museum in McKinney or virtually via Zoom. \n\n\n\nSouthern Blackhaw Viburnum\, (Viburnum rufidulum)\n\n\n\nThe naturalist Doug Tallamy has brilliantly elucidated the critical need for using native plants in our home gardens and landscapes. Most people concerned about the natural world know that we need native plants to provide food for insects\, which in turn are necessary to provide food for birds and other animals. They also provide fruits to feed them directly and flowers to maintain pollinator populations to ensure their reproduction. So which trees and shrubs are most beneficial\, and provide the most uses to the most species of insects\, birds\, or animals – especially the ones we most want to share our backyards with? This presentation will cover a wide variety of trees and shrubs and what each provides. We will review which birds\, bugs\, or other wildlife use them\, their advantages to the home landscape\, and how they sustain the local ecology and a healthy environment. \n\n\n\nJoining our Meeting\n\n\n\nDoors (and Zoom) open at 6:30 PM for connection testing and setup. He was Director of Horticulture at the Texas Discovery Gardens for over 7 years. In addition\, he was the Director of Botanical Gardens / Wildlife Biologist at the Heard Natural Science Museum for the prior 11 years. Roger also owned his own landscape company\, which he still operates part-time. A specialist on Pollinator Gardens\, he created a huge Butterfly Garden and Hummingbird Garden of national acclaim at Texas Discovery Gardens. He also developed noteworthy pollinator gardens at the Heard Museum\, Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge\, the Dallas Mayor’s Pollinator Garden\, and for numerous schools throughout the DFW area. Roger had a weekly column for several years in the Dallas Morning News on plants and gardening and continues to write articles about nature in several publications.

DESCRIPTION:Our 25th Stiff Creek Wildflower Walk is a great opportunity for people of all ages to learn about native plants. Knowledgeable chapter members will guide and help you identify native wildflowers along our walk. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDate and Start Time: May 3 @ 9:30 \n\n\n\nWhat to Wear: Long pants\, closed toe shoes\, sunscreen\, and insect repellent are recommended. \n\n\n\nWhat to Bring: Camera\, wildflower guides\, binoculars\, and a brunch item to share after the walk. We plan to have brunch around noon. Please bring your brunch item ready to be served. We can keep your items hot or cold but cannot cook or heat them. \n\n\n\nDirections: 4545 CR 412\, McKinney\, TX 75071 (Brett and Brigette Laplante) \n\n\n\nFrom the intersection of Hwy 5 (N McDonald Street) and Hwy 380 in McKinney\, go east on 380 about 1 mile to Woodlawn Ave (CR 331) where there is a Circle K service station on the northeast corner. Turn left and go 2.1 miles to the end of Woodlawn. Turn left on Texas Farm Road 2933 (no sign) and go 3.5 miles to CR 412. Turn right on 412 but it is more like going straight as 2933 curves to the left. Go about 1.2 miles and turn left into the driveway at 4545 CR 412. You can park along the driveway. You will see trucks and a flatbed trailer with hay bales for the wildflower walk.

He started as an intern after graduating from Austin College in Sherman\, TX with a degree in Environmental Studies. He is among the many driving forces behind production systems on the farm\, offsite harvests\, and land restoration projects. His ability to read the land\, identify what it needs and create a comprehensive plan for its restoration is a huge part of Native American Seed’s success. \n\n\n\nHe has helped lead riparian restoration projects for San Antonio River Authority and U.S. Army Core of Engineers where NAS did extensive training with staff and created an Operations and Maintenance guide for the long-term care of the project. Other clients include IBM\, HEB Foundation\, Audubon Society\, Texas Parks and Wildlife and Attwater Prairie Chicken National Wildlife Preserve.

He is an author\, photographer\, and environmental advocate for parks and open spaces where he can often be found with camera in hand. His award-winning nature photographs have been featured in local\, state\, and national publications. He is a Certified Master Birder through the Audubon Dallas sponsored North Central Texas Master Birder Program. In 2016\, he was named an Honorary Lifetime Texas Master Naturalist for his substantial contributions to the furtherance of the activities of the organization. In addition to his professional life as an accountant\, Ben serves as the naturalist for the historic Dallas Hunting and Fishing Club. \n\n\n\nAs a volunteer\, Ben currently serves as a member of the City of Dallas Forestry Stakeholder Committee\, Trinity Park Conservancy Conservation Committee\, citizen project lead at Big Spring Preserve and citizen project lead for the Friends of the Fish Hatchery at White Rock Lake. In Dallas Great Trinity Forest\, Ben is an EPA and TCEQ certified Texas Stream Team volunteer who monitors water quality at numerous locations in the Dallas Trinity River watershed.

She teaches beginning backyard birding classes and gives talks about Central Texas birds and gardening in the Austin community. Jane teaches a Birds of Central Texas class for the local non-profit Lifetime Learning Institute. DESCRIPTION:Our chapter’s annual “Show and Tell” meeting will be on Tuesday September 3. Members and other attendees are encouraged to show pictures and tell about their favorite native Texas plants. Everyone is invited to participate and there is no minimum length\, but we request presentations to be limited to 10 minutes. The only requirement is that you show and discuss native Texas plants. \n\n\n\nThe meeting will be a hybrid\, with attendance options either in-person at the Heard Museum’s Laughlin Hall or virtually via Zoom. Enter Laughlin Hall from the southern entrance to the museum. Presenters can be in person or remote. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTo participate\, all you need to do is send an email to timcast@gmail.com with a PowerPoint\, Google Slides\, or PDF that you will be showing. Please convert presentations in Apple’s Keynote software to one of these formats. Also\, please do not send photos – convert them into a PDF format using Microsoft’s or Apple’s “Print to PDF” function. She promotes insect conservation and habitat gardening through presentations\, events\, interviews\, and articles\, as well as through a website and Instagram and Facebook communities under the appellation “St. Julian’s Crossing Wildlife Habitat”—the name adopted for her family’s Monarch Waystation.  \n\n\n\nLauren is a member of local chapters of the Native Plant Society of Texas (NPSOT)\, Native Prairies Association of Texas\, and North American Butterfly Association. She has also received Level 1 and Level 2 certifications through the NPSOT Native Landscape Certification Program (NLCP)\, has attended the “Monarch Conservation Workshop: Train the Trainer” training\, and serves on the NPSOT subcommittee for the NLCP Advocacy companion class.Independent of her naturalist activities\, Lauren Simpson is a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Houston Law Center\, teaching Lawyering Skills and Strategies.

SUMMARY:Collin County - Stiff Creek Wildflower Walk
DESCRIPTION:A GUIDED TOUR OF LOCAL WILDFLOWERS \n\n\n\nThe 22nd Annual Stiff Creek Wildflower Walk is a wonderful opportunity to learn about native plants for people of all ages. Members of the Native Plant Society of Texas will help you identify native wildflowers growing in the countryside. \n\n\n\nWhat to Wear: Long pants\, closed toe shoes\, sunscreen\, and insect repellent are recommended. \n\n\n\nWhat to Bring: your camera\, wildflower guides\, binoculars\, swimsuit (if you want)\, and a brunch item to share after the walk. We plan to start at 9:30 with brunch around noon. Please bring your brunch item ready to be served. We can keep your items hot or cold but cannot cook or heat them. \n\n\n\nDirections: 4545 CR 412\, McKinney\, TX 75071 (Home of Brett and Brigette Laplante) \n\n\n\nFrom the intersection of Hwy 5 (N McDonald Street) and Hwy 380 in McKinney\, go east on 380 about 1 mile to Woodlawn Ave (CR 331) where there is a Circle K service station on the northeast corner. Turn left and go 2.1 miles to the end of Woodlawn. Turn left on Texas Farm Road 2933 (no sign) and go 3.5 miles to CR 412. Turn right on 412 but it is more like going straight as 2933 curves to the left. Go about 1.2 miles and turn left into the driveway at 4545 CR 412. You can park along the driveway. You will see trucks and a flatbed trailer with hay bales for the wildflower walk.
