SUMMARY:Lessons Learned Running a Native Plant Nursery\, Fredericksburg chapter - Feb 24
DESCRIPTION:“There are a whole host of positive aspects about a native plant business. I want to share the amazing and unexpected things I have leaned.” Dr David Winningham said. \n\n\n\n\nDr. David Winningham\, our February speaker for the Fredericksburgs chapter of NPSOT\, may have a PhD in physics but his love is the “hobby that got out of hand” – the nursery known as the Natives of Texas in the hill country between Kerrville and Medina. \n\n\n\nNurseries didn’t offer native plants in the early 1990s when the Winninghams began searching for those plants that thrive and support the ecology of the Texas Hill Country. As they explored western Texas from San Antonio as far as Big Bend\, they began collecting seeds and cuttings\, focusing on some for the madrone trees that have made the nursery famous.

SUMMARY:NATIVE TREE SELECTION: Recommendations for the Spaces Around You. Fredericksburg\, Aug 26
DESCRIPTION:What tree is best? How do I take care of it? Have you wondered which native tree will shade your backyard\, not drop leaves in the pool\, and also doesn’t need a lot of water? Do you have acreage and are trying to restore your landscape after fire or grazing? Are you wondering what to consider when picking trees for color or to create a visual screen between you and the neighbors without irrigation? \n\n\n\nRachel Sarlls\, Regional Urban Ecologist with the Texas A&M Forest Service-San Antonio region\, addresses these questions and others during this month’s meeting. Her topic: how to select the perfect native tree for your various spaces and how to care for them.

SUMMARY:The Beauty of Native Grasses\, Fredericksburg Chapter meeting - May 27
DESCRIPTION: Move over Hill Country Wildflowers! Hill Country native grasses are not only beautiful too\, but important! \n\n\n\nGillespie County Horticulture Extension Agent Elizabeth McMahon will go over what exactly makes a native grass “beautiful\,” provides examples of “beautiful” grasses in the Texas Hill Country\, and reminds us how native grasses are just as important as wildflowers. That is the presentation. However\, what is a presentation about grasses without identification actual grasses\, tall and short. Elizabeth includes a grass identification activity – for those of us who appreciate that there are more grasses than wildflowers but we just don’t know their names.

SUMMARY:Transform Your Lawn into Native Plant Haven and Photography Studio
DESCRIPTION:Driven by a commitment to water conservation and wildlife support\, Arlon Motsch replaced his traditional grass lawn with a variety of Texas native plants. He will share how he overcame the challenges of plant selection and community skepticism\, while enhancing his home’s aesthetics and sparking a passion for insect photography at the January 28 meeting of the Fredericksburg chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas (NPSOT Fredericksburg). The meeting starts at 6:30 with a social time and the presentation begins at 7 p.m. \n\n\n\n“The vibrant ecosystem Arlon cultivated has provided the perfect setting for capturing detailed images of pollinators and other insects\,” said Jonathan Watt\, new Board President of the Fredericksburg chapter of NPSOT. “His photography\, which now serves as both a creative endeavor and an educational tool\, highlights the ecological value of native plants.” \n\n\n\n“I’m looking forward to sharing the things that worked and those that didn’t while converting our lawn into a pollinator paradise\,” said Motsch. “I’m also going to share a lot of close-up insect photos and discuss the potential for homeowners to create sustainable landscapes that benefit both the environment and their personal hobbies.” \n\n\n\nMotsch has lived near Center Point for seven years and moved there from Midland\, TX. He is an avid amateur photographer who has embraced the world of digital photography on many levels. He is well versed in many types of photography\, but has a strong personal interest in macro\, close-up\, wildlife and nature. He is retired and enjoys the outdoors\, is an avid hiker\, and enjoys kayaking\, van camping and road tripping with camera in hand. He has been known to leave water behind on hikes to carry more camera gear\, make U-turns on interstates to take a picture\, drive many miles down dirt roads to take a picture\, lay in mud\, ants\, and briars to take a picture\, and landscape his yard for bug pictures. \n\n\n\nNPSOT Fredericksburg holds its monthly meetings on the 4th Tuesday of the month at St. Joseph’s Halle (212 W. San Antonio St.\, Fredericksburg). There is a social time with snacks at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting starts at 7 p.m. The public is invited to attend in person and via online streaming (https://www.youtube.com/@fredericksburgtexasnativeg4884). More information is online at Facebook (@fbgtxnpsot)\, Instagram (@npsot_fredericksburg_chapter)\, and https://npsot.org/chapters/fredericksburg/. Meetings are free and open to the public.
