Native grasses not only add structural interest but also create valuable wildlife habitats. Cheryl Barajas will share insights on how to seamlessly incorporate these grasses into your garden. Bev Morrison will cover the selection and approaches to groundcovers\, many of which can lead to minimal or even turf-free lawns. But be cautious—some ground covers can spread quickly! Using native grasses and groundcovers in your garden is easier and more beautiful than you might expect. \n\n\n\nAbout the Speakers\n\n\n\nCheryl Barajas is a dedicated native plant enthusiast\, currently serving as the Plant Sale Committee Chair. With her expertise as a Master Gardener since 2012 and a Master Naturalist since 2019\, Cheryl’s passion for the environment and over five years of active membership in the Native Plant Society make her a valued advocate for sustainable gardening and native plant conservation. \n\n\n\nBev Morrison has recently developed an interest in plants\, despite not having a gardening background. She is a Master Naturalist\, teaches fourth graders through the Longhorn Project\, and volunteers at various nature and conservation sites. Although she enjoys birding\, her primary interests are prairies and trees. Bev is eager to share her knowledge about trees through the Native Landscape Certification Program (NLCP) while continuing to learn herself. \n\n\n\nIn-person – Parking Pass Required\n\n\n\nNew YELLOW parking passes are needed. Parking & Transportation will be checking! Patty Steinke will be outside handing out passes. If you have a pass\, don’t forget it – you will not get another one if you picked one up previously. If you need a pass\, arrive early enough to pick one up and place it in your car. DESCRIPTION:Habitat volunteers help weed and mulch flower beds\, plant native plants\, maintain pathways\, and trim trees and bushes. Volunteers may also help clean out the pond on select work days. \n\n\n\n\nNo experience necessary—we’ll show you what goes and what stays\n\n\n\nBring your own tools or use ours (we have gloves too)\n\n\n\nDon’t forget to bring a reusable water bottle\, hat\, and sunscreen!\n\n\n\n\nVolunteers must be 18 or older to participate in EIH’s workdays unless prior arrangements have been made. \n\n\n\nWe do not hold workdays when the university is officially closed. Also\, workdays are canceled during inclement weather\, though a light sprinkle or drizzle rarely keeps us out of the garden. DESCRIPTION:A Conversation about Invasive Plants / What they are / Why They’re Harmful / And How We Can Do Better for the Environment by Pam Lienhard at Riverside Nature Center\, 150 Francisco Lemos St. \n\n\n\nThis program will discuss what plants are considered invasive; the difficulty in recognizing and controlling invasive plants; the damage they might cause to the environment; why native plants are better for our habitat; and offer suggestions on which native plants are suitable substitutions in your landscape. \n\n\n\nA handout of common invasive plants of the area and suggestions for native Texas plant alternatives will be available. \n\n\n\nPam Lienhard is a 5th generation Texan; grew up in New Braunfels; attended Southwest Texas State University and University of Illinois. \n\n\n\nShe is a 20 + year member of NPSOT; became a certified Master Naturalist in 2015; had the great fortune to work on the NPSOT state board where I learned a lot about invasive plants from Deedy Wright and Cheryl Hamilton \n\n\n\n“I think my greatest appreciation of nature came as a student and visitor in Germany. A friend and I worked one summer in Bavaria with a clear lake (no gasoline engines allowed) in the foreground and majestic mountains all around.  I learned one could walk through forests\, fields and meadows pretty much at will (as long as you stayed on the trail…it was Germany after all). I was hooked on being out in natural habitats. \n\n\n\nHaving grown up in Central Texas\, I love the natural beauty of the Hill Country. I’ve lived in Kerrville for 23 years\, but am saddened by how quickly much of this beauty is being lost.“

In addition to numerous articles\, she has authored or edited ten books\, among them Thinking Like a Mountain: Aldo Leopold and the Evolution of an Ecological Attitude; The Great Lakes Forest; The River of the Mother of God and Other Essays by Aldo Leopold; Towards Sustainability for Missouri Forests; and Missouri State Parks and Historic Sites. She is a founder and past president of the American Society for Environmental History and the Missouri Parks Association. She has lectured in nearly every state and on five continents\, served on many professional and environmental boards and committees\, and won numerous national and state awards for publications and conservation.

This prairie was the “crown jewel” of our Central Texas prairies\, and you’ll hear the dramatic (but ultimately futile) account of the efforts to protect it. We’ll also explore some of the special MoKan Prairie plants and our efforts to save those plant genetics through seed collecting and plant salvage. \n\n\n\nAbout our speaker: Ashley Landry is a Texas Master Naturalist\, a member of the Native Plant Society of Texas\, and the founder of the Native Plant Rescue Project. She has been featured in Wildflower magazine\, The Austin Chronicle\, Central Texas Gardener and the Liberty Hill Independent.
